16:9 Format Now Accepted For Landscape Photos

Following multiple contributor’s requests and to cope with the technological evolution of sensors and computer screens, we have decided to accept photos in a 16:9 format.

In a nutshell:
  • - This will be authorized only for Landscape format: the size ratio (width/height) can now be anything between 16:9 and 4:3 (before, it was anything between 3:2 and 4:3). So, it is not limited to pure and fixed 16:9 ratio.
  • - No change for portrait format: still limited to anything between 3:4 and 2:3 ratio.

The guidelines have been update accordingly: you can find the relevant chapter here: Size

As usual, common sense should be used in the motivation to use such a format in your compositions.

We hope that this change will be welcome by the community.

Unfortunately not. We need to draw a start date which is today. Or we would be faced with a re-upload of thousands of images, which is simply unmanageable.

In addition, the re-upload guidelines text says "Do note that the new photo needs to be exactly the same as the old, only with improved quality." This means that the re-upload function is not meant at increasing size or change format.

Wow, a new chance for thousands of subjects I put too high or too low in the frame  

I guess it's a good decision since 16:9 actually suits many aircraft photos better, but it's quite a revolution for an old-timer like myself.

Is 1024 x 576 acceptable, especially for older images? Or is there a minium width requirement like 1200 px?

Great news, Patrick. But why not for portrait? I would think that control towers are perfectly suited for this aspect ratio.

Well, a flatter format than 3:2 actually suits the majority of aircraft photographs, don't you think?

I've been uplading a few tonight, and I think my fav new format will be 8:5 or Vik's 5:3. 16:9 is too flat for me in most cases, at least for now.

The 4:3 compositions below were done to include the scenery/horizon, but I've gotten some rejections for similar attempts. I wonder if 3:2 will also rejectable as an unmotivated choice in the future?

I can't see it, given it's the default sensor ratio for nearly all DSLRs. But, yes, it would be a bit of a shocker!  Wow!

Another step forward, good to see things moving with the times.

Now another point I'd like to make is the 1mb max size is too small. Sometimes I can't even upload a 1200px picture at max quality because that comes to greater than 1mb. Any chance of this increasing to even 1.5mb? It's not like space is an issue anymore.

Sorry for asking but I am just curious. Why is that so important to you (and others)? For me the only thing it changes is that less background will be visible on such crops. I cannot see this being a big deal, though.
Again this is no disrespect, but I 've been asking myself this question ever since I saw this thread.

The 16:9 format has been mainly designed for television and computer screens (HDTV, Full HD,...) for a Landscape display. We think that the needs for portrait are largely covered by the current range 3:4 to 2:3

This is something that screeners can't do anything about, as this is a technical limit imposed by the system. The request is on the list for the developers.

For me personally, the site has been lagging behind display technology. Most screens these days are 'wide screen' format, so it seems odd not to support a 'wide screen' format for images here. Yes, I know most cameras used by most photographers here don't use that format, but for some subjects, 16:9 is a better format than 3:2.

For example, 'blue sky' shots of A346s and 77Ws will look better in 16:9 than 3:2 (IMHO).

TBH, I suspect many of my shots will stay at 3:2, but it's great to have the creative flexibility to go to anything between 16:9 and 4:3. In the end, the aspect ratio of the image should be driven by the composition.

With a site upgrade due before year end we should see file sizes increased to either 2mb or 3mb.
