I'm after a bit of advice if possible - I currently use a D7100 and am looking to purchase a new body, making the 7100 my second camera. I am trying to decide between the 7200 and 750 and would welcome any suggestions on which to choose.
I have never used a full frame camera before and I have read plenty of pros and cons when it comes to aviation photography which is what it will primarily be used for.

D750 has an advantage in low light situations with keeping noise in low level at high ISO but how often do you shoot at high ISO? D7100 is a very capable camera with good fast AF and ISO. I would personally suggest to invest in good glass.
Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR II or Nikon 80-400 AF-S version will be perfect match to your Nikon D7100 and will serve you well for long time.
If you already own a good glass and really need a camera for low light situations then go for D750. It is a fantastic camera!

That depends on how focal length you need and what lenses you have.
So if you for example have a 300mm lens on your D7100 and need the 300mm to fill the frame, the D750 will not be your thing unless you decide to buy a 400mm lens in addition.
If you shoot a lot at high ISO the D750 wins over the D7200.
And here comes the big "BUT". If you are looking at a D750 you might want to look at the new D500. This DX camera will give you the same reach as your D7100 and probably clearly improved high ISO in addition to 10FPS and the new AF module. If the D500 is not totally out of your price range, I would suggest to wait for the review to come out and see what it does. It could easily be the best Nikon for spotting since the D300 back in the days.

What do you feel is the shortcoming of your current camera? If you have a specific need, it would be easier to say if some other existing camera will fulfill that need, or if you should just work on improving your technique with your existing gear.

I'd go with the 750 if you're keeping your 7100 as a second camera - that way, you have the best of both worlds

Thank you all for the advice, there is certainly a lot to think about. I currently use a Sigma 150-600 as my main spotting lens which does give me a lot of reach, although it is a bit soft at max focal length.

i own a 7100 and wont even touch a 7200 at all. my current plans are to keep saving for a older D3X a D800 or 810 ...
in your case i think depending on what glass you currently own crop of full frame .. makes more sence to wait for a D500 ....

Thanks for more replies, I think for me the crop sensor is prefered purely for the extra reach, one thing I have picked up on though is an investment in better glass rather than a new body.
With that in mind I currently have the Sigma 150-600, which is giving me some great results, I was thinking of investing in a 70-200 f2.8 lens. I have been comparing the Nikon and the Sigma versions which obviously have a £1000 difference in price, does anybody have any views/suggestions on the use of these?

Take a look at the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. It's a fantastic lens.

Can speak only on Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II [the latest version] which I had in the past.
Optics: It is super sharp at all focal length at every apperture. Setting it at f4 or 5.6 gives corner-to-corner sharpness with perfect contrast. Mainly I used f5.6 for aviation photography.
Build quality and ergonomics: built as a tank, metal and glass. Rings are very smooth to turn. Heavy but not for me.
This super fast magic lens can serve you well during sports actions and kids playing in the garden. I mean this is almost all-in-one lens. Not a 300mm or 400mm but why bother if 200mm or 200mm x 1.5 is enough for you.
I would suggest to go for Nikon. It is expensive but it is a long term investment and lens which will serve you well for long time.

I'd suggest considering seriously how much you need that F/2.8 aperture. The Nikon 70-200 F/4 is reputed to be as sharp at equivalent apertures for a pretty decent savings in both cost and size/weight.
The main downsides compared to the F/2.8 are the loss of one stop of aperture to help you out in low light, a bit less potential to use shallow DOF to isolate the subject, and degraded autofocus performance if you use the 1.7X or 2.0X teleconverters.* If you need those features, then definitely one of the F/2.8 lenses, but if not, the F/4 seems really worth considering.
* Nikon officially states that only the center auto-focus point on the D7100 is able to autofocus on lenses with maximum apertures smaller than F/5.6 and equal to or larger than F/8. However, if I understand right, other users have found the other auto-focus points do work as long as the lighting is decent and the subject is high contrast.

Most of the Nikon telephoto lenses are designed for full frame cameras, so they work on both full frame and crop frame. The exceptions are the 55-200 and 55-300 budget telephotos, and the 18-XXX superzooms.
Choices of the others depends on how much reach you need, how big of aperture you need, and your budget.

If you are on the budget - try AF-S Nikon 70-300 VR. I saw very good photos in database taken with this combo.
You may also consider AF-S Nikon 28-300 VR which I call "All in One" lens.
If money not an issue - try AF-S Nikon 80-400 VR. Gives you great range and quality.
I had AF-S Nikon 70-200 VR II on my Nikon D700 and I found it short in my home airport - Almaty airport.
I think 70-200mm is short on full frame body.
