You should rotate the image from the original file and not from an already edited one. If you do the latter, it will create a loss of sharpness. My workflow is always to level, crop, resize and then other edits.

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys I have a quick question about the rotation of the photo is it the horizon in the background that has to be level or the aircraft because I have had a string of rejections lately mostly ccw or cw rotation, so could I have some help please?

The horizon needs to be leveled, or a vertical reference at or close to the center of the frame has to be level. Avoid using vertical references (e.g. sides of buildings, poles, etc.), at the right and left edges of the frame since these can be subject to an inward lean due to lens distortion characteristics. In some cases there are not any usable horizontal or vertical references. In that case, aligning the aircraft so it "looks level" works. I give priority to vertical references. When I use a horizontal reference, I use the most distant reference as it tends to be the most accurate for leveling an image.

The only exception to keeping the horizon skewed is if you're composing an image taken from inside the cockpit looking out through the windshield and the aircraft is in a bank. In that case, you can use a reference inside the cockpit. Depending on the desired effect for which you wish to compose, you can either show the horizon level with the view of the flight deck tilted to match the bank, or show the inside level, with the horizon appearing banked.

For images that "feel unleveled", looking at a thumbnail sized image helps. It tends to show level and centering issues better than the full sized image.

Hope this helps.

Hello from the UK.

This photo looks alright to me, certainly in terms of levelling. Those background verticals throughout the photo look pretty good. I would be surprised if that caused a problem with the screeners. What does catch my eye though is the registration - have you done any specific editing there? The 'V' seems to have jaggies, but the 'H' is, if anything, a little soft. But black lettering on a white fuselage is very difficult to get looking just right in a downsized image.

It is difficult to get things right when you have bright light on the fuselage like this, but it looks like you have done a good job with that.

Hey Wiggy,

Since I am not using my screening monitor right now, my opinions could be limited for your reference. As far as I can tell based on your posted above, I would suggest to try smaller size rather than size larger than 1600px because some detailed parts look tad blurry on my side at this size. Sunshine for VHOXR is tricky but I can't judge it correctly currently with this monitor, would be ok to try slightly brighter but also try to maintain the background sky within Overexposed situation because the BG sky is brighter than the a/c now.
Hope it helps.

Regards,
Harry

Think you'll run into the following issues:
-Blurriness
-Crop (the rotor blades are cut off on the far left
-CW rotation

I don't have a great eye for seeing things like exposure or hues, so someone else may weigh in there. But those strike me as largely passable.

Hey Wiggy,

Merry Christmas ! Sorry for the late reply as we are working on the queue lately. Regarding the photos you posted above, Single Prop* I prefer slightly CCW Rotate, and Qantas LINK looks compressed to me :(

Hi everyone I have been getting a string of rejections lately as well as some harsh feedback emails from a user who I won't mention their name the complaints mostly to do with so called dust spots in my photos also I would like to apologize to the whole A.net community for posting terrible photos is the past, I am only a 17 Yr old photographer trying to take good photos but however apparently they aren't good enough as I have no experience in taking good photos even though been doing since 2018, however if this may continue I will Live the A.net community and use my photos for something else

Thank Hadleigh.

Hey Hadleigh,

Your photos are NOT terrible, back when I first started I thought my photos were terrible too! While my old photos are not showstoppers it would be wrong to call them terrible photos. I started taking my photos in late 2017 when I was only 15 years old. Here I am almost 19 and a screener! Who would have thought?!
I'm looking through your collection and none of these are bad photos, none at all. None of your rejected photos are bad photos either. When we screen them we pick out the flaws that can be improved upon to make an already decent photo the best it can be.
I'm going to ask some questions about your workflow BEFORE I give you some pre-screening and further advice so that I can make the most out of my advice towards you.

1: What program do you use to edit your photos?
2: Are you saving your photos at the absolute maximum quality?
3: Do you manually re-size your photos when saving them?

Once again, your photos are not terrible and the screening team only want to help you improve your photos. Besides were a friendly bunch, there is no shame or harm in asking questions in the forum or e-mailing us any questions you have about editing.

Hi Tim I appreciate your kind words that makes me feel a lot better
1. The program I use is Just The program that my photos open up in when I go to get I to them unfortunetly I am not that familiar with Photoshop an I haven't used it in a while
2. I'm not to sure whether I can if they are at max quality
3. Do you mean cropping ?
Thanks I always remember that many other people are the same and don't always have photos accepted correct me if I'm wrong.

- May I suggest you look into using Adobe Lightroom? It is a tuned down version of photoshop that is much easier to use. I use it myself for all of my photos.
- If you're using the Windows Photo app, when you are about save find "Resize" and you will be prompted with the popup shown in this screenshot: https://prnt.sc/KDjvm2PntMxi
press custom dimensions and enter 1200 pixels or lower wide and 800 pixels or lower tall, and make sure to slide the quality slider up to 100%. This will make the photo much smaller and hide all kinds of flaws to make it much more acceptable while keeping the compression to a minimum.
- No, I meant resize the dimensions of the photo, which I explained above.

Onto the feedback of the photos you posted.
VH-IEJ: some compression is visible, the nose is a little bit soft, and it could do with a boost in exposure. Easy fixes, with 2/3 solved by reducing the size.
N360SL: CW rotation needed, and its a tad UE, compression seems passable on this one.
VP-CJR: UE, and compressed again, otherwise looks nice.
N510MW: soft, compression, ue.
N165A: CW needed, but thats it really, this one is quite nice.

Do you shoot JPEG by chance? If you'd like, I can pm you my email address and you can send me some of you unedited photos for me to try editing. This will give you a good example of what an acceptable photo would look like.

Nothing wrong with the 1500d, what lenses are you using?
Oh, and by the way: I, a screener, recently had an embarrassing number of photos rejected that I'm still kicking myself for not seeing a glaring issue. Rejections happen to everyone, its not ab-normal.

Spotting issues comes with practice, but from time to time you just miss something.
About dust spots, this is where lightroom/photoshop will come in handy as it has a dust checking and removal tool. I would suggest trying to clean your sensor with an air duster similar to https://duragadget.com/media/catalog/pr ... 10_1_1.jpg.

You can take your gear to any photo shop and have them cleaned there, but it might be expensive.

Like I said I would look into using Lightroom, it works wonders.
