It has a green/cyan cast, is very noisy, high in frame and too large in size for this type of wuality. But most of all, it's blurry. This photo will never make it, sorry. What kind of camera are you shooting with again?

With that camera, you need to shoot planes that are 1. close to you, 2. not moving, and 3. will lit, on a sunny day in the morning or late afternoon with the sun at your back.

I used a similar camera (Nikon S6000) for several years and had to follow all three of those rules, with rare exception, to get a photo accepted here.

Sorry, but the most likely scenario is that a photo looks blurry when uploading as well, but the user doesn't spot it. That's why we have pre-screening threads.

I’m assuming you mean how long for your photos to be screened. You can see this is in your photo corner. You can see on which day the photo was uploaded and you can see what date is currently being screened. From this, you can deduct how long it roughly takes.

would a Canon EOS 1500D help much if I got one ?

Hi Wiggy ... while cameras all have their pros and cons and some have more features than others and obviously the price can differ wildly, my personal experience is that I invested in a good quality lens before investing in a better camera. While I was working out what I was doing I was shooting on a Canon 700D which is probably 1 step up from the entry level model and just had a basic Sigma 18-250mm lens on it. I had my issues but when I finally worked out my sweet spot settings (thanks to the help in these forums - especially Kas) that set up was fine. When I was able to save a bit more, rather than buying a new camera, I invested in a new lens (Canon 70-200 f2.8L II IS) which has really helped to improve the quality of the images I have been taking lately compared to when I started.

I think the key thing to work on is making sure you have your settings right and you become super critical about your work. There are some great photos I have seen shot with some entry level equipment and I'm sure the screeners here have seen some absolutely terrible images shot with 1000s of dollars worth of equipment. I can also attest to being super critical on what you shoot vs what you upload .. I would say I have shot maybe 12-13000 shouts since I first tried to get my first image up on a.net and during that time I have only got 219 images accepted .. and 117 rejected .. so for 13000 shots that is less that 340 images I thought were good enough to attempt to upload .. and nearly 1/3 of these weren't.

Looking at your profile image, I am guessing you are in Australia and if thats the case there are plenty of good spots close to all the major airports to shoot from that you should be able to get some good images at. Just google "planespotting" and the city you are in and you will find them.

BTW - the settings I use on my camera for clear day shooting (after guidance here from Kas) are ISO 100, f8 to f10 depending on angles and cloud coverage, and 1/400 shutter speed. All on Manual mode. If I ever get unsure I will shoot in AV or TV mode depending on where I am so you only have to dial in some of these settings.

Good luck on getting up and running, get your settings dialled in and once you do you'll be ok.

The f/8, ISO100 rule is generally a good place to start but I think too many photographers fall in to the trap of only ever using those settings, without variation. A Canon rep once told me that there is almost no discernible difference between ISO100 and 200 - and as a terrible pixel-peeper I tend to agree - so I typically leave the ISO on 200 unless my subject is static. When the light drops, I've no problem bumping it up to 400, which in my view is better than risking a blurry image. Use whatever ISO (and aperture) will guarantee you the image, because a little noise is far, far easier to address than blur.

Most important of all, read the camera's manual, and do a bit of research into the relationship between ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Far better to understand WHY people recommend ISO100 and f/8 than just go with it because someone more experienced said so.

Finally, to address your question, the EOS 1500D will be more than capable, however results depend heavily upon the photographer. It's all too easy to blame equipment when in fact the user is trying to push his/her gear well beyond its limits. Some cameras (and lenses) do some things better than others, but this isn't always reflected in the price or where the product sits in the manufacturer's line-up. Get a cheaper body, but a half-decent lens, and you'll have the basis for a future portfolio of quality images. To be perfectly honest, you can get superb photos out of a cheapo lens, as long as you realise its weaknesses, but I'd personally spend the extra on good glass (providing you plan to expand your photography and not give up in six months' time).

The camera is just a tool the photographer uses so 700, 1500, Canon, Nikon, Sony whatever, it wont matter that much while you are learning. Yes some are better than others but like JaKTrax said, whatever you have, understand your camera's manual and its workings too. Personally, I would start with a good setting like recommended above, get comfortable and confident there, then start playing with your settings to get different results. There is also some great videos on youtube that explain how aperture, ISO, and shutter speed all work together. watch a few of them, play with what you learn and go from there. Its all part of the fun

Also, if you haven't done so already, look into some processing software. Adobe Lightroom is probably the big one but there are plenty out there. Google search some, try their free trials and see what works for you. I would say almost every photo in the database has had some form of processing done to it, even if its just cropping to the right size or moving an aircraft so its centred.

I can’t help with Olympus cameras as I have never used one but I’m sure there will be something suitable in theirs range for you.

If the editing site you are using isn’t working for you I would recommend trying the 30 day trial of a done Lightroom

Yes - absolutely - I totally agree with JaKTrax - having a basic camera will be absolutely fine, as long as you know what the best settings are, and know what the kimits of your lens is. e.g. I have the Canon 1200D (the cheapest Canon DSLR when i bought it in 2015), and when using the 75-300mm lens which came with the camera, I found that using it at 300mm, the image lost quality somewhat and induced chromatic abberation (a purple tinge on the edge of the aircraft nose), so I avoided using it at max zoom.

ALSO - a very important point...ALWAYS shoot on bright sunny days with the sun shining onto your aircraft - it makes the world of difference...shooting on overcast days just doesnt give nice photos, and they will generally get rejected.

Then a few months back, I invested in a better lens, (Sigma 150mm-600mm Contemporary) and yet still using that basic 1200D I've managed to get images like these out of it....

Also, I was originally using the Canon editing package, but that I do not believe was fir for purpose, and I've recently taken out a subscription of Lightroom/Photoshop, which helps a lot in getting the images up to scratch. I tend to adjust the White balance (I prefer colder settings at around 4800), and bump up the saturation a bit to bring out the colours. I also increase the contrast a little, and adjust exposure higher, (they prefer a higher exposure setting (ie. brighter) on airliners), but not too bright - needless to say be careful not to burn out any areas of the photo, especially any white areas of the aircraft.

ajaaron, hope you don't mind me saying but I'd pull that Norwegian image from the queue and re-edit as it's over-exposed and has a very slight pink hue. The red appears almost orange and toning down the brightness will help improve the contrast.

Back to the OP, don't go overboard with the latest editing software - I still use Photoshop Elements 5 (from 2006!) and it does more than enough to bring standard aviation images up to par. You never NEED the best or the latest, whether we're talking cameras, lenses or software.

VH-HWV is poorly lit, blurry, oversharp, noisy and has an obstruction across the tail. VH-KGE is too small a file to properly judge but the light is bad.

I'm going to pull no punches by saying that you need to considerably improve your technique because those images are awful. There really is no nice way to put it I'm afraid. Read up on photography and search the database to compare what's in there to what you're submitting. If you can't see a difference, there's your first problem......
