Karl, you’re right, bad phrasing on my part.

Also to correct the typo in my post. I mean floor, not flirty xD

Holding... the... tripod...
Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

Either way, when you use the tripod, if your lens has image stabilization, be sure to turn it off or the images will come out blurry.

Never hold the tripod when taking photos, that defeats the entire purpose. And to be sure, this is a tripod:

Image

Put the tripod on the ground --> aim, frame the photo and focus the camera --> leave it alone.

I recommend a shutter release cable, to be able to take the photo without touching the camera. It's like a remote control that is attached to the camera with a cable that you can plug in.

Image

If you dont have one, use the in-camera timer (either 2 or 10 seconds on my camera). That way, you can press the shutter button and the camera takes the photo with a few seconds delay; enough for you to take a step back and not having to touch the camera.

No, but you need to make sure that the next you take a photo try to focus on the subject and adjust the camera settings if necessary.

is one of the motive rejection for having covers on the aircraft.

Covers are acceptable so long as it is the first image of the airframe in the database. If there is already an image of the airframe with a cover, then subsequent uploads with covers will elicit a motive rejection.

at 300mm your image frame becomes very unstable so you need a high shutter speed to get sharp results. The recommended approach is your focal length plus one stop, so 1/400th of a sec minimum at 300mm, but that will depend on how steady your hands are. This theory has always sounded a bit iffy to me and I'd recommend at least 1/640th to almost guarantee results. If you can get 1/800th, or 1/1000th, even better, although faster shutters will pick up on any heat-haze more.

Lens softness may also be playing a part if you've a cheap 300mm (is it a zoom or a prime?).

Aside from the 70-300 f/4-5.6 L IS Canon's 300mm zooms (75-300s & 70-300s) will suffer quite bad softness at 300mm, particularly at apertures narrower than f/9. A tripod will help but you will be severely limiting your flexibility — it would be much more beneficial to improve your technique and understanding of photography.

Check with others, but in my opinion, soft and blurry (especially the trees in the background)

Could use a tighter crop: try cropping closer to the nose and tail. No worries about the background bring blurry. As long as the aircraft is in focus, it is fine. A little less brightness would be good as well.

For me, the tail or the rear parts look soft / blurry for me. By the way, I would prefer to use a smaller size like 1200 - 1300px in this case.

Looks like it could do with a smidge of rotation to make the background more level. I also see a bit of blurriness/heat haze, which may make it inadmissible no matter what.

Visually a touch of contrast wouldn't hurt either, though its probably ok as it is.

Try a smaller size along with the other fixes and I'll have another look!

Agree with Tim: Needs some CCW rotation. Looks over-sharpened on the main rotor blades. I am so seeing some color bleeding in the white registration and title markings.

Cheers,

Jehan

They both look high in frame and oversharpened to me. And the first one needs CW rotation.
