Rejection changed from "underexposed" to "poor sun angle"

Tue Dec 03, 2019 11:59 pm

First rejected for "underexposed." I appealed after looking at several photos of same aircraft in Airliners.net database. Response was "poor sun angle" and soft. The irony is I already had two photos published from the same location with minutes of this aircraft taken under the same conditions. Your thoughts???

I am unable to access a full sized image when I click on the thumbnail. Would be glad to comment if you could repost the image.

Hi Mark,

I am sorry to say and I didn't have anything to do with your rejection (obviously as I am not a headscreener), but I fully agree that the sun angle is poor and due to the very high sun the underside will always look underexposed so that goes in-line for me. Overall the shot has a dark feeling, so I agree with both rejections the second just explains the first.

I would personally not recommend to take other shots as a reason why any shot should be accepted. Generally without referring to your shots at all, but other wrongs don't make anything right. Such a sun-angle is always borderline, so surely some "similar-lit" shots might make it as well.

Here is the shot, for the interested:

Thanks as always for the screeners taking extra time to review the photo. But I must disagree with the "poor sun angle" rejection. More than half of the side of the aircraft is clearly lit by the sun. It was a crystal clear day. And while the bottom of the aircraft is in shadow - it is still bright enough to see plenty of detail. I've seen many photos posted on Airliners.net where the underside of aircraft is MUCH darker than this one - I know, several of them are mine (I've been posting here for almost a decade). So unless Airliners.net has drastically changed its standards, this rejection makes little sense.

Posted below is an example of mine where the sun angle was similar and the underside of the aircraft was much darker and yet the photo was approved.

Some of the screeners have certainly changed the standards of what was once accepted based on their own personal likes. There was an instance recently where a newbie screener admitted that he rejected an image solely because he’s “not a fan” of that type of crop despite admitting that the crop is a commonly accepted one and implying the uploaded could appeal.

Well what a fitting comment. In this case actually 3 screeners say the same (poor sun angle/ underexposed) and yet you claim it came down to a personal liking?
That makes sense.

Otherwise screening criteria also changed / evolved over the years.
And yes crops are subjective.
You can cite me as much as you want for your rants (than at leat openly say your are talking about me) but I will stay honest and also admit when I might have made a mistake.

Open a thread in Photography Forum if you got anything to say but don’t ruin other feedback threads for your rants.

Why is that a rant? It’s an observation about an issue that was raised in this thread. If you keep rejecting images based on personal preferences that have otherwise been acceptable on this site then you are indeed effecting change in the upload criteria not necessarily for the better.
