Got back into planespotting after a several month break. I am hoping to get my first accepted photo one day soon, and am looking for feedback.

This one looks a little oversharpened, and while I like the darker look, I think I might need to bump up the blacks to get accepted

This image also looks oversharpened to me, and the registration is just blurry. I am not sure that portion of the image could be made any clearer

Both photos won't be accepted due to bad composition: the aircraft are too high in frame and the crop is too wide.

In addition to what dutchspotter 1 says, they both look quite blurry and over-sharpened to compensate.

I can definitely fix the crop, but is there anything I can do about the blur? How do you avoid blurry photos in the future? I think it may have been caused by my use of F/5.6

Probably doesn't help, best to get up to 7.1 or 8. And get back to basics: better weather, sun at your back in the morning or evening, slow moving or still subject that is close to you.

Kind of hard to control the weather with the -8 I'm afraid since we get so few, but as it warms up hopefully I will have better opportunities. I will definitely bump up F stop as well

All of them are poorly cropped.

How so? They all seem pretty centered to me. Is there too much white space around the aircraft? Should I crop tighter?

Unequal space between aircraft and frame edges, poor lighting, too much dead space, and the wing is awkwardly clipped in the first image. Photography is mostly about light, and it's not doing you any favours here unfortunately.

Thank you. What sort of lighting do I want for photos here? I am assuming diffused sunlight on the angle I want to photograph right?

For a start: sun at your back, few/no clouds, avoid several hours around the middle of the day when then sun is high in the sky. Use something like www.suncalc.org for reference.

Whatever light you have available make sure it is behind you.

If things are dull, keep the aperture up around f/8.0 and try to follow the plane smoothly as it goes past. This will hopefully get you a panning effect and at say 1/100sec it should be sharp from edge to edge of the plane. Slower than that and you start getting one bit of the plane sharper than the other if your photo is at an angle.

The rest is just practicing and experimenting.

I don’t understand why guys sit outside airports for hours to watch planes land. I got a job with an airline and got to play with the airplanes I saw. Get a job throwing bags it’s extremely fun.
