Question on "oversharpening"

Sat Apr 03, 2021 3:16 pm

Hello everyone,

Just looking for some feedback (not complaining!).

I have received the same feedback regarding the photo below, basically over-sharpened.

Last submission was with a bit of noise reduction, and not sharpening at all.

The last feedback was: "maybe you shoot adjust your camera regarding sharpening..."

I am using a Canon R6 and a Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM lens and shoot in Raw only. Basically factory settings.

Should I soften it a bit?

Just looking for feedback on what to look for regarding sharpening. What should I look for in the photo to detect over sharpening?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, just drop the sharpness setting in your camera — default is +3 with Canon and normally fine so you've either bumped the sharpness up or +3 on the R6 is too much (I'm inclined to think the former). On a somewhat related note I've found RF cameras produce quite dull images by default, so I bumped up the saturation to +1 in the menu.

When resizing the image in PS in the resampling option try to use Bicubic (smooth gradients) instead of Bicubic Sharper (reduction) as in some cases that can introduce oversharpening.
