What camera and lens are you using? Many telephoto zoom lenses (unless if they are high end like the Canon L series) tend to produce soft images at the widest apertures. Maybe you can try stopping the aperture down and bump up the ISO (to compensate for the narrower aperture). It's easier to fix noisy images vs. soft images.
