Prescreening - Too Good To Pass Up...

Wed Jun 08, 2011 1:16 pm

Heya guys... this was too good of a day to let this slide. Remember back in the dark ages before Internet and chat forums and iphone flight tracking basically destroyed the sheer fun of going to an airfield and not having the faintest clue what was in store? Well... this "little" gem seemlessly slipped through the entire vast sprawling network of global aviation sleuths combing the databases for that next little tidbit of info... and presto... there was a big fat blue A380 on short finals... hahaha.... Korean Air has apparently started their A380 trials fully 10 days before their scheduled trials... so have these 2 captures in the queue and hoping for your assistance in seeing them through the gauntlet succesfully. Minor detail for interested parties... Airbus pilots on the radio throughout, assuming the Korean crews were in the cockpit observing and are still on training status pending Korean gov't certification completion.

As always, thanks in advance for your time and input!!!

Martin,

d1307538039.8424kornhl7611b.jpg could use a bit of sharpening
and n1307537694.7414kornhl7611.jpg has a cyan color cast

Cheers,

Thierry!

Bonjour! Again... you guys are amazing with your rapid participation in the forum! Thanks for getting back so fast. I've adjusted the cyan cast via the color balance menu in PS by a value of 23, and applied an additional pass of sharpening for the second image:

If it's still not working please feel free to let me know! Thanks again for your quick reply and your time and input!

Cheers!

Martin,

the oversharpening has been overdone a bit as you may see on the jaggies on the engines and the titles and a few other smaller areas; a sharpness between the first and second edit should do it.

With the coloring you now stepped onto the other side of the palette; too red now.
I attached an own edit of the photo:

apart from color I also added a bit of sharpening as I found it could use a bit more of it.

Good morning!

I've gone ahead and queued Thiery's edit of the arrival shot for brevity's sake, and I've reduced the amount of sharpening for the 2d sharpen pass:

Thanks again to Thierry for taking time out from his regular duties to assist with feedback!!! Hat tip to you gentlemen for being ready with assistance!!!

Cheers!

Quoting ThierryD (Reply 5):
You're welcome!

Thanks a mil for being on top of this Thierry! I hope my learning curve improves and I get the hang of PS soon enough to stop being a nuisance. Also, thx everyone for the feedback, just be advised, I cannot reply via the A.net msg system due to my member status, I've sent emails!

The Korean just kind of dropped on our head and really no clue she was coming, but I've actually been working on a dream shot for submitting to A.net which will require a ton of assistance, hope to have it here in the feedback forum for your comments and assistance soon, trying to do the legwork myself.

I had an insight on the screening process a while back, kind of an obvious thing, but it's really changed the way I've looked at the entire A.net experience. I write professionally, and of course as a writer wherever you submit you deal with editors or agents or producers and every single person has feedback. More relevant... I cannot remember a single piece of writing I've ever submitted that wasn't eventually published or produced that did not_ have_ to go through an editing process to achieve the final desired result. But I've never considered editors or producers as an impediment to getting the final work published, just part of the process. As soon as I started accepting the screeners' roll as de facto A.net editorial staff my entire philosophy on submitting has changed. Interesting how a turn of phrase changes your whole perspective.

On that note, cheers and thanks again to all!

Hey guys!

Only regarding photo 1, the arrival shot. Had some extra time and wanted to try a different approach on the edit and have incorporated Thierry's feedback on sharpening and color cast. I've added some desaturation, reduced tint and warmth and increased contrast in an attempt to balance out the colors. Any opinions on this vis-a-vis the original edit? I just want the best image to survive, and if it can't make it at all, no biggie. At least I tried:

First upload:

Reedit:
https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/x1307640161.213ke380c.jpg

They're both queued, if either or both just can't hack it, no sweat.

Thanks again for the time and input!

Hi Martin,

The color on the first is definitely much better (reedit has a pretty strong cyan cast), though the reedit does have slightly better contrast.

Hey Dana!

Thanks again for getting back! I left the initial version in the Q with the color corrections by Thierry. Agree the colors look far better on it. Friend standing next to me submitted his version to JP:

http://jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=7123996

We talked about the difficulty of editing the colors. He said he wasn't too happy with the rendition of the shot, but submitted for novelty's sake. Not every day a plane eludes the entire online aviation community and just pops up at an airfield for the first time. I thought, well, if it's gonna be on A.net it better look damned good.

Thanks again for all the help guys! Hope to have some real editing challenges over here soon!

Cheers!

You helped produce a Photo of the Day, there's not the slightest doubt in my mind I could have produced comparable results on my own, so I'm very happy to offer the hat tip to you gentlemen for your assistance and advice! Thanks again and thanks for having the Feedback Forum in the first place. Brilliant idea.

Cheers!!!
