Window Shots - Evall95

Hey guys I'm back again. I have just arrived at my holiday destination in Phuket which I flew from Adelaide to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur. I flew on a pretty new MH A333 which was really nice and the windows were pretty clean so I thought I might try and get some shots. I have edited these shots to the best of my ability and would like some feedback on them.

Hello! The pictures youve taken arent overly bad, however window shots generally need to have good motive as well as quality. The only real problems Im seeing with your particular shots is that they are soft perhaps even blurry. You can always try and edit it, but sometimes the issue is beyond repair. Anyway, Good Luck!

1.) Overexposed, low contrast, level, blurry.
2.) Motive.
3.) Low contrast, looks a bit off-level, oversharpened.
4.) Overexposed, low contrast, soft, maybe a bit high in frame (I would also crop this at 3:2). Light isn't great either - sun is overhead.

Without seeing the originals, I'd say #3 is the only one that might have a shot with a good edit.

what is the motive issue for the second one?

Can you do a better edit with any of them if I give you the originals?

I'm not a screener, but there's just nothing interesting in the shot to justify the crop (having a tiny bit of wing/winglet and not much else).

As mentioned, they all have multiple quality issues.

Not much to see. Images with just the tip of the wing and not much else don't have a great chance.

with the second one there is actually another plane plane flying the opposite direction so thats what i was trying to get but maybe it is not close enough.

The second will be your best chance. The light is not great on the first, but not an instant killer. The third just has too many quality issues, and is probably not fixable.

I would try to balance the bightness/contrast a bit better; they're currently verging on being overexposed in parts now, but are still flat.

the first one still has the problem of a bit over exposed but still a bit flat right? If so I will try and fix it a bit more and throw it in the que. Thanks for your help on these 2 photos

Yes. Also looks un-level, and the color looks a bit weird to me, though I couldn't tell you exactly how to fix it.

yes the colour does look weird to me aswell but i think it is because it was quite a foggy,cloudy day. I guess you will tend to get that in most Asian countries.

It's probably partly that. But any shot taken out of a window at a reasonable altitude usually suffers from low contrast and color casts (at least in my experience). Looking again, it looks like a cyan cast.

The first two were better than these, and you do realize there is a limit to the number of window views you can upload per flight, right? The latter two would certainly be considered double if from the same flight.

Contrast is still low, the first one's still soft, and the second one is a weird mix of soft and oversharp (probably a good indicator that the quality isn't there).

Slightly, but probably not enough to get them accepted, especially when there's not much compelling in the frame - the first is just clouds, and the second is too hazy to really see anything on the ground.

The contrast/quality is the main issue. For rare or interesting shots, there is usually a little leniency, but I don't think these fall into those categories, so you would need to have the quality perfect. Basically, they wouldn't be worth the effort if they were mine, but don't let my opinion stop you if you really want to try.

I've gone back and looked eat my shots and tried to find some that are not just winglet and wing but have other interesting things in the frame.

firstly how is this shot. it looks slightly uneven to me but I have levelled it with the light post. how is the contrast/brightness, sharpness and overall quality. with fixing or left like that how do my chances look?

All of them have very poor contrast. The first does need cw rotation.

First is almost ok (contrast still off), but the second and third aren't even close.

Yes, pretty bad contrast & softness issues, caused by shooting through the aircraft window. It's pretty hard to get good quality shooting through several layers of (often dirty & scratched) plexiglass.

Yes it is very difficult. Especially landing shots when it has just touched down and you want to keep a steady hand. O well I am lucky that I flew on pretty new planes so the windows were ok and I'm happy that I've got one photo from my trip accepted

Blurry or out of focus and also not the best motive. The two girders are too prominent in my opinion.

Yes, still blurry. If you shot that hand-held, it's probably motion blur, and not fixable.
