Pre-screening (Concord977)

Mon Apr 15, 2013 4:58 am

I've avoided uploading for a few years and tried to improve my shots in the meantime. The following are in the queue*, and I'd appreciate knowing if I'm in the ballpark, or if I need to go back to the drawing board again.

* I hope it's ok to ask for feedback on photos already pending in the queue. If not, I'll ask that this thread be deleted.

Hi, you can definitely ask for feedback on photos still in the queue! All of them appear to be a bit too grainy and lack contrast.

The A340 seems to lack overall quality so that one might be hard to salvage

The American 767 is a bit too low and the light isn't the greatest, but perhaps it could be saved with a bit of contrast, sharpening and NR.

The Redwood A320 is a pretty cool shot. It needs a bit of contrast, sharpening and Noise Reduction.

The last jet sitting on the apron seems a bit hot (too bright), perhaps a dash of contrast would be favorable, and the noise seems well controlled.

You are definitely on the right track, and your pictures are in fact pretty good apart from a couple of issues!

Cheers, Max  Smile

Thanks, that's helpful. I may have to change my method of sharpening, and revise my preference for lighter images (I like to see detail under the wings).

1.) Low in frame, low contrast. Noise isn't an issue yet, but might be when you add contrast.
2.) As Max said, seems to lack quality. Heat haze, maybe (yes, it can easily affect airplanes that high at LAX). Slightly low contrast and high in frame.
3.) Soft, overexposed, yellow cast, slightly low in frame.
4.) Low contrast, slightly noisy, not the best light, though may be OK.
5.) Borderline overexposed at the tail, slightly soft, low contrast, and quite noticeable banding in the sky - probably too much NR there.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

It can affect aircraft anywhere at any height. Last week at MAN the temperature was 2 degrees Celcius and we were getting haze shooting approaching aircraft 200ft high! And no, I'm not talking about shooting over distance at 400mm - a 737 required 80mm!

God, how I hate heat-haze........
