Prescreening - Multiple

Wed May 29, 2013 3:10 am

Hey guys,

Few more I wanted to try:

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/f1369490455.9624hstud12x8d.jpg

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/q1369504945.9165b3138_12x8.jpg

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...dy/h1369639129.25049vskq_12x8c.jpg

Have a couple more but I'll work through these first. Editing takes far too much time for me. No rush at any rate. Thanks again for the input.

Cheers!

all looks pretty decent to my eyes, maybe the CZ is a tough low contrast and the SQ is a bit oversharpened, but I am not expert. BTW, these are from HKG? I have never seen this angle, you shot from the inside of the airfield?

Hey powwiii,

Thx for the quick response and for your feedback! Yeah, not sure on the sharpening thing. I can try a few edits and reduce the USM by a few points see if it holds up. Ill go over the CZ again and see what that looks like. I have a problem with compression, upon uploading the shots always seem to lose contrast and/or become a bit lighter.

The shots are all taken from the same spot on the a/c maintenance far side of the field along the road familiar to most people who've been to Hong Kong. I think most guys are positioned wrong to take, in this case, A380 departures with the hill backdrop. For most departures you want to stand further down the road. This is simply closer to the maintenance hangars.

Much thanks for the input!

1. Overexposed, flat, bit soft.
2. Flat, not the best light, quality looks marginal.
3. A bit flat and yellow.

Hello Martin.

Long time no speak - I hope all is well with you.

You certainly have a fantastic motive here - excellent photos.

Overall I would say these look like they have real potential. A couple of thoughts:

* Thai - Interesting Vik sees this as overexposed. This issue has recently been discussed in a thread. For me it isn't really about overexposure - more the whites at the front are just bright; nothing's burned out though. Might be possible to tone that down just a tad. This is one of those tricky ones for sharpening, so maybe a bit of selective sharpening in areas would help - e.g. nose, engine nacelles.

* China Southern - I actually prefer the lighting here. There are minor issues, so would be best to see that in the original. is it a significant crop? In terms of the overall lighting, I think this one would look better with more contrast.

* Singapore - Maybe slightly yellow. Areas verging on the oversharpened on my screen.

Feel free to get in touch if you want any further opinion on the originals.

Good luck with this kind of motive - I would certainly click on them. Lovely backdrop.

All the best.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the feedback! Hiya Paul. Great hearing from you again. I shot you an email. Okay, I've tried to incorporate Vik's feedback on these:

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...e1369854284.0576hstud12x8editd.jpg

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...dy/l1369852569.4686b-6138editd.jpg

(I just noticed on pulling up the image this was shot one frame before the other image. Same series those, so I think Vik's points basically apply)

I don't see genuine overexposure in the first one, but I do see awkward light with which you are working. The image as a whole isn't overexposed but it will likely need toning down for here. A nice motive though.

Hey Karl,

Thanks for getting back so fast. Quick question... any suggestion on a technique for toning down the whites? I'm kinda at a loss how to move forward on it without darkening the whole thing.

Cheers!

Based on your new edit of the TG, it looks to me like the nose might be blown out. I don't really see those whites as any darker or with any more detail, despite your lowering of the exposure.

If that's the case, it's probably a lost cause for A.net. That's something to be paid attention when you take the photo.

As Karl said, the light isn't doing you any favors.

First is green, and nose a bit bright. Second...wow...not sure what you've done to the color, but it's got quite the sickly/garish green cast to it.

Hey Dana,

Thnks for the instant reply! Uploaded wrong file. I'm suddenly getting tons of color cast comments... red... blue... yellow.... green... I always shoot in the same mode. Kind of not getting it. The Polar was at sunset and is very very red, so I did a few edits with varying colors trying to see the differences and pin down where this "color cast" stuff is coming from.

Thanks for getting back right away. Try again:

Hello Martin.

I can only see the links now in Reply 13:

The Malaysian looks pretty good overall. I don't see any significant colour issue. I do see slight oversharpening artifacts on the cheat lines where dark meets white in a few areas, most notable rearwards of the back cabin door and on engine No. 4. Nothing horrific, but screeners can be very tight on such things.

As for the Polar, that looks lovely - very nicely sharpened. I really hope you don't get complaints about the light hue here, because it looks very natural to me. Could it benefit from slightly more contrast? Not sure - I feel I have lost my sense of thresholds for this.

All the best.

Malaysian is slightly oversharp in parts, but OK by me.

Polar is bordeline for me on contrast (low), color (yellow) and centering (high in frame).

I agree with the screener, Polar looks a bit low contrast, high and yellow, but it is a lovely picture, and should be easily fixed.

Thanks for the prompt feedback guys. As I mentioned to Paul in email, when I was shooting with the Canon most of the feedback was regarding sharpness. With the Nikon I'm having color cast issues. Still working through the process of correcting color cast without overdoing things.

Alright, next version:

Hey guys,

Thanks again for everyone's time and all the feedback. Trying to strike a balance on the color thing, but I was also trying to troubleshoot this "color cast" issue that's been rearing its head lately. Maybe I picked the wrong shot to do it.

Latest edit:

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...370274275.0045dsc_4876june12x8.jpg

Going through some of the feedback threads not sure to what extent the team is considering the impact of time-of-day, but fwiw, this shot was taken about 15 minutes before sunset, as you can see from the angle of the shadows along the fuselage. No clouds so we had basically blood red sun and the attendant light issues.

Thanks again and happy shooting to everyone this summer.

You need to do much more subtle color corrections than you are. Of the three, I think the first one looked the best (the one I said was borderline yellow). I would have gone maybe -5 on the yellow channel on that edit, and that's about it.

Got very lucky and was able to catch another Thai 380 w/ the mountain backdrop in spite of 10 knot winds. No tricky light this time, just sun and fluffy clouds. Real miracle. Alright, nother try:

Hi Martin

had a quick look at this earlier. Like the composition loads, well done. Its that tricky HKG light in the background/foreground which I see you are showing here against that super Thai A380 frame.

Agree with Dana its too cyan (sky) and lacking the (deeper) greens of the HKG hillsides. Was it very humid?

Also the mountain line seems somewhat clinical/sharp to my eye?

Regards Tony

Thanks for the feedback Dana and Tony.

I redid with moderated Contrast / Brightness and tried on the color thing. Still working through the color cast issues with the Nikon. I shoot in RAW and usually use AUTO for White Balance preselect.

Need some screener opinion on these for Motive in particular. For reference sake:

Cathay 77W:

Air France 772:

New Zealand 772:

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b....6487nik_9084croplvlsharpn10x6.jpg

Not holding my breath but thought, no harm in asking, I think I have a fairly decent grasp of the A.net Motive criteria, but since Motive is a more subjective aspect I'd ask. You never know.

Thanks again guys!

Hi Martin

Gotta say those HKG aviation/landscape/weather photos (assume no 1 is HKG too) are great - well done

Sorry can't help with the Nixon settings, I use Canon. It seems better, I would add a tad more punch/detail myself (personal)
