Post - Screening: Hint For Two Pictures

Fri Jul 26, 2013 2:28 pm

Hello everybody,

I would ask some feedback about two recent rejections I have received.

1. rejected for grainy only, but personally I cannot see any significant or disturbing trace of it
http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/4180/4tsj.jpg

2. rejected for oversharpened only, same as above.
https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...0713_l1372617479.1859img_85731.jpg

Since no comments were given in rejection emails, I would like to know what I'm missing with these two... just to re-work on them in the proper way.
(i.e.: if someone could please point me out eventual OS/grainy spots ecc.)

Thank you very much in advance

Matteo

Hi,

The first one some slight grain visible in the dark areas under fuselage, Also looks blurry around engine and tail area.

Second one the aircraft does look jagged.

1. I can't see grain.. The only thing I see is the CA on the trailing edge of the tail.

2. Yeah, the plane's quite jagged.. Though I've never taken them nor look through too many similar shots to say any more. It must be hard!

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

so, for #1 it seems quite unfixable - given the comments - right?

anyway, I think I will try again with the #2 once again, taking more care while applying usm, especially on the aircraft.

Since this topic is opened, I would like to exploit it for a "pre screening" too:

Would this picture be acceptable as far as motive/distance is concerned?

Interesting shot but aircraft is rather soft and dark.

Thanks Mark!
If all the issues are about softness and darkness I think it could be something fixable. Let's see if I can do something for that

A new editing of the Iberia shot... works better now?

Where's the new edit?

Have to admit, the shot doesn't do anything for me with the small airplane just sitting in the center like that. If it were off-center, like a rule-of-3rds type thing, I think it would work better.

Sorry for such a late reply, but I've been away without the chance of reaching my computer.

My fault, I'm sorry. Anyway, here it is:

I know... but in my opinion it was the best wide composition I could get without losing the "drama" of the picture I wanted to capture.
Even if it's not the best as far as the basic techniques are concerned, I like it... but probably it's more up to personal taste, in this case

I would consider cropping closer on the bottom and one side to give it more of a Rule of 3rds composition like Vik suggested. I think you would still have the impact of the clouds but the aircraft would have more presence. Since your image size is large you could do that without affecting the quality at all.

Still doesn't do a whole lot for me personally, but it'd probably get multiple opinions.

Well, it eventually got accepted!

But, despite this, I would like to go a bit further into discussing it... you know, if I will ever have a similar photo opportunity I may learn something at this stage to make an attempt into achieving something "not banal".

A brief foreword about the crop: if compared to the original, RAW picture coming from the camera, the crop is pretty the same (apart from a few pixels   ).
So, the one linked above - and the accepted one, of course - are essentially the same as the original one talking about crop.

Now:

I have tried to work on it, trying different crops more obeying to the rule of thirds, but actually I got things that were not 100% satisfactory for me. Probably it is the starting image that has something wrong in this sense (I mean, another angle / crop may have simplified the whole thing) or I am doing something wrong/missing something.

So, would you mind to show me a crop you consider fine and obeying to the rule of thirds? (feel free to act on the image posted, if possible: I don't care of the quality/size, since I'm more interested into the crop in itself   )
Just to have an idea of what you have in your mind...
Thanks in advance!

First of all, congrats! No matter exactly how it is cropped/centered it is nice to see something a bit unusual get accepted.

I had something like this in mind when I responded above:

This is your linked image cropped to 1024px wide with no other re-sizing. I did switch to a 4:3 aspect ratio, though, since I preferred that to 3:2 after trying both.

That's basically what I had in mind too, but I would have cropped in more on the bottom. I ended up using a 4.3 to 3 aspect ratio, since neither 3:2 or 4:3 quite worked for me:

Thank you very much for the help!
I still have a couple of pictures like that and I think I will try to go with a similar crop this time.

You've given me also a good starting point for the next time (I hope to catch again such a wonderful background!)...
