Post-Screening Motive

Fri Aug 16, 2013 5:51 pm

I just received a "Motive" rejection for a photo I took of Kai Tak. The photo was taken from a common location of which there are numerous other exampls in the database, but is an update of the former airfield in its current condition. Based on this rejection am I to assume that photos of present-day Kai Tak are no longer being accepted?

It would be helpful to photographers to make an announcement stating that present-day Kai Tak photos are no longer being accepted.

Thank you.

They definitely are being accepted but it depends on what it is. I've seen several large overviews of Kai Tak in it's current state over the last few years - but the specifics of your image are probably very relevant to motive, because it's not an active airport anymore and there are structures on it.

I believe the rule of thumb is that there must be something aviation-related in the image. So, if you can see the remains of the runway or the apron then I think it should be okay. On the other hand, if all you can see is the buildings and would never know it was a former airport without the description then that would likely warrant a motive rejection.

Martin - I was the screener who rejected your picture, and was made aware of this thread from a teammate.

There just isn't enough airport left to make it a worthwhile addition to our database. At some point Kai Tek stopped looking like an airport as it was built up, this photo confirms it. Your photo, in my opinion, shows a nice night shot of the HK skyline, and is not aviation-related to be included here.

If you disagree with my assessment I encourage you to submit an appeal, so that the Head Screening team can make a final judgement.

Hi Royal,

Thanks for taking the time to get back. I don't necessarily disagree with you, I'm just wondering if there still isn't interest in this, even as the airport itself slowly "vanishes." I think your word choice was good actually. I'd just hope that topically, the state of Kai Tak as it slowly transforms is still worth while for A.net. From the personal correspondence and interest I've received on my previous Kai Tak shots, I had thought it would be. At any rate, there aren't too many opportunities to even shoot the field, because the weather is mostly shitty all yaer round anyhow.

I'll do an appeal thing then, if only to generate a conversation on this?

Thanks again.
