Pre-Screening

Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:17 am

Hello Screeners and members,

Can I get a pre-screen on these two images?

Quoting mohammedzaheer (Thread starter):

It's grainy, soft, there is some compression and lacks overall quality. It looks like it was a heavy crop.

It's grainy, especially in the shadows but other than that it looks good.

Thanks for the input! I'll work on the second one. The first one was cropped quite a bit, good eye!

Agree completely with kiffy. First one definitely does not have quality to make it here. Second one, you need to adjust your levels. Looked at in photoshop and that makes a difference.

Which program are you using? I use photoshop on a Mac so I go to Image -> Adjustment -> Levels and it pulls up the histogram to adjust the levels. Not sure what you are using.

The Dash 8 as noted looks like it was a heavy crop - don't think this one can be salvaged.

The CRJ also as noted needs a levels adjustment, like below.

Thanks Alevik for posting that. I was going to do that, but forgot to do it and then my school computer (one that we use for exams) decided to die. I would agree with your adjustments. Think I was at 15 for the left slider when I looked at it last night.

Quality-wise they look pretty much equal (good) to me. I think I like the angle of the bottom one a bit better so I would upload that one if they were mine.

Have to agree with the second one being a nicer angle. Only thing I would do is some selective sharpening on places. Titles might be a little soft.

Shouldn't have any issues with the motive as it is an equal crop around the fuselage.

I'd have to agree with Ryan on this one. It looks a bit haphazard as-is and I think a closer crop would be beneficial. However, to Len's point, it may be fine as is. I might suggest waiting for screener input as those folks would be better able to direct the crop.

Or you could just do a different crop with the whole wing visible, just to be safe (provided your original shot has that).

Thanks everyone for the input! If I can keep it the way it is that would be first choice, otherwise I'll have to re-edit once again  . The only thing I don't have of this aircraft is the wings fully captured hence why I decided to crop  . I was thinking of even cropping down further just showing the front of the aircraft but I prefer the wings to show the way it is but looking what's right.

I really like this shot. The nose is a tad blurred but hopefully OK and the leading edge of the wing is oversharp. There's also a fair amount of grain on the belly.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/1144936...2704506845/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Grainy and also looks like it might be suffering from compression or it was a heavy crop...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/1144936...2704506985/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Grainy in the shadows and the sky above looks a little blotchy.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/1144936...2704507135/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Grainy and borderline oversharp.

1. Motive seems fine. A bit dark, but I like the moodiness, and the quality seems good considering the lighting.
2. Similar to 1 except the lighting does not seem quite as interesting. In other words, someone might say that #1 is creatively-lit whereas #2 is just backlit.
3. Could probably be cropped closer on the sides, and the branches touching the nose wheel is awkward.
4. I think this would probably be a distance rejection. The pole on the side seems more distracting than interesting.

Hi,

1. Might get by on the creative lighting as Marty said, but I'm not really much of a fan of it and the foreground clutter is really distracting, imo. It also looks a bit soft.
2. Looks a bit soft in areas, the lighting isn't really that great.
3. Looks flat, foreground clutter is pretty distracting, and as said above, it probably should be cropped closer.
4. Lighting isn't that great and the pole is really a problem.

RE: Pre-Screening

Tue Mar 04, 2014 3:58 am

I appreciate your guys feedback, if these images don't have a chance no worries as they will go in my personal collection.

Each A/C I snapped a rear pic, I also got a front view for acceptance. But I really like these images as it's something different than my normal shooting. I just hate overcast weather, these images were edited in LR, I feel sharpness is much better in PS. The overcast weather is really bugging me making it very hard to mask the A/C. If any tips for masking please do share!!

But main concern for these images considering the sun is in front, with a good edit do they have a chance you think?

For #4 If i do a tighter crop, what about being backlit?

Thanks

Also any thoughts on these?

Those last two, think both of them suffer from not centered. The second one may have just too much distortion for the jet wash. I know there was one recently rejected for too much jet wash distortion with a similar angle, but on the ground.

Sounds good! I'll keep the second for my personal collection and center the first. When I have a free slot I'll toss it in worst case it gets rejected. Lol.

Use the Polygonal Lasso tool, and just draw approximately around the aircraft. I do that all the time for images where using the Magic Wand won't work well (so basically any image that isn't aircraft-against-blue-sky). You don't need to trace exactly around the aircraft - as time has gone on, I've sacrificed accuracy for speed in that regard.

Overcast can be quite annoying when there's not anything special going on with the light. But keep at it and sometimes you'll capture something interesting, especially toward sunset if the sun shines through from under the clouds (sorry for the self-plug):

The first is high in frame and looks a bit oversharpened. The second is very high and soft (too much jetwash, I think). Neither has great lighting, so I think they're both nonstarters for A.net.

Sounds good! I will try that out, usually it's either the magic or quick selection for me. Your right about the accuracy part as I'm starting to do the same at times

Absolutely, that is a gorgeous pic. I'll keep an eye out for the sun to be in the right spot.

I figured these were long shots, considering the sun being in the front rather than on the side. But at least i'll keep these for my personal collection

I think so, yes, However it looks like it was a pretty big crop and the quality isn't really very good at all. Perhaps some noise reduction, sharpening, etc can fix it but honestly I think your time is better spent on other shots.

I have not looked for evidence either way in the database, but I suspect that you might run into a motive rejection because a significant portion of the tail is blocked by the horizontal stab...

Tail shots are usually taken when the plane is on the ground to allow for less blocking by the horizontal stabilizer.
