Pre-Screening, RAW Experimentation At FSM

Sat Aug 02, 2014 11:57 pm

Hi guys,

I started a new thread because the title of the old one was probably misleading.

I've gone out to FSM three times in the last four days and gotten some shots that I'd love to get your advice on:

F/A-18 departure- Marty (mjgbtv) said that this one was borderline, soft and over-sharpened.
https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b.../b1406947694.3907vmfa-251psusm.jpg

Envoy ERJ-145- This was my first RAW edit, and I think it came out fairly decent. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Hi Amrit,

The ERJ image is not opening.

Hi Amrit,

The ERJ looks pretty darn good to me. Maybe a bit soft at the nose, but I'd say fine as-is. As for the F/A-18, I agree with Marty. It would be borderline. Not much further editing you can do at this point on that one, it is just marginal in terms of the overall quality.

How does this F/A-18 arrival look?

Hi,

This second F/A-18 looks soft, maybe blurry, flat, and has a yellow/red cast to me.

Amrit,

Both the F-18 images are suffering from Blur, and are also soft. The second would also need more contrast.

The ERJ is ok but the nose could do with a little more sharpening.

Thanks Gary and John. I re-worked the ERJ, factoring in the soft nose and the red cast Len mentioned. What do you guys think?

www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/14822376585/sizes/o/

Here's a new F/A-18, I'm worried this one is a tad blurry, but I gave this one priority over the other sharper ones in the sequence because of the ATC in the background.

Hi,

I think the ERJ looks fine now. The F/A-18 seems blurry again and also needs CCW rotation. I don't think that one will work, sorry.

Thanks for the reply John. Here's probably the sharpest F/A-18 taken that day. Do you think the chopping of the vertical stabilizer is alright, from a motive standpoint?

Hi,

I doubt this one can work, it just seems too blurry and soft. Maybe at 1024 with a re-edit, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Sorry, as it is a nice shot! I would maybe try a re-edit at 1024, not sure about the stab, for me I would crop it a bit closer to the engine. If you have a shot with the stab in it, I would probably use that instead, provided sharpness is ok.

Hmm, really? I didn't think this one would be blurry/soft... But I guess my eyes are still getting trained!

Thanks for the advice John, as always.   I'll try it at 1024 just for the heck of it and post it in a little bit.

Instead of trying 1024, I picked another shot from the sequence in hopes of it being less blurry. What do you guys think of this version of the F/A-18?

Hi,

Going in order of links,

1. still soft, overall quality isn't great, definitely better at 1024.
2. soft, maybe needing CCW
3. soft in spots, maybe a bit heat hazed, sky is a bit grainy
4. somewhat dark, soft or blurry in areas
5. soft

Hi,

As for the four in the last post...

1. still looks blurry, I just don't think the quality is there, sorry
2. looks good to me
3. better, but still soft, might be some blur at play here
4. dark, poor light, soft in spots

And as for the Cessna, sorry it got rejected!   Nice shot but unfortuntately the quality just isn't there for a.net.

If this is in reference to the sun flare of the metal leading edges, that will not lead to a rejection. As for these two,

1. bit bright, borderline oversharpened in spots
2. bit bright, some areas are a tiny bit oversharpened, but I think this one might be ok as-is

Regards,

I'm sorry Amrit, but when I looked at that, I didn't equalize it. Upon doing so, there are weird artifacts all around the fuselage and under the wing and stabilizer. I think it is from excessive noise reduction, as the clouds look very "plasticky."

My apologies,

You're right. These TUL shots came out a bit noisy for some reason, although I did shoot at ISO100. I'm a bit clueless about this noise problem I'm having.

Hi,

The bizjet looks good but there is some weird white mark above the antenna furthest back on the aircraft. I'm not sure what that is, it might be a cloud, but it doesn't look like one. The 752 is dark and a bit soft in areas, but not too far off.

Thanks John. I can't seem to find the white mark, is it visible only when equalized or can you see it on just the regular image? My eyes still need some training... Haha.

I think this one has some heat haze on it... But I thought I'd give it a shot here anyway.

Hi Amrit,

The white mark is visible on the regular image right behind the last antenna on top before the tail. It is right on top of the fuselage. As for this one, its too heat-hazed to work out.

Its a tiny bit soft around the topside of the fuselage. I personally would say its good enough. There's only two other accepted picture of the same aircraft on A-Net and they are all the same angle and direction. Additionally, the direction of light isn't the most ideal, its coming from behind the aircraft. I would try appeal anyway.

RE: Pre-Screening, RAW Experimentation At FSM

Congrats on that being accepted.

Looked at your other shot on my personal computer. Looks soft around the windows as well as the high in frame. Given your size, it looks like you can simply crop a little bit off the bottom and still be okay with the aspect ratio.

Thanks for the input Len. I added some USM to the windows and did a closer crop of the aircraft to fix the high in frame issue. How does this look?

looks passable to me, maybe a tad soft/flat, but again good for me.

What Tao said! It looks a lot better and I personally think it should pass through screening. Being rejected for just a tad soft would be a bit harsh IMO.
