New Camera Time Or Poor Editing?

Mon Aug 11, 2014 1:50 am

Here are a couple of nose shots both tagged for being soft. I've tried sharpening them some more and re submitted. Could the camera (A350 Sony) be the problem? I have a newer Sony lens, but softness always is a consistent rejection.

Camera is fine, to me looks like editing. What software are you using?

Those are the same shot.

With that said, it's rather difficult to diagnose a camera vs. technique vs. editing issue from looking at resized photos. Post a couple full-size ones and it'll be more telling.

Here is the second image. I am using PSE 11 with maximum sharpening done in RAW as well as sharpening done in JPEG.

I would recommend using smart sharpen for PSE. Select the aircraft using the magic wand or polygonal tool. Expand the pixels by going to SELECT>>MODIFY>>EXPAND...next step DUPLICATE LAYER then resize Image and last do your sharpening here by using SMART SHARPEN which is located under "ENHANCE>>ADJUST SHARPNESS"

This should be what your aiming towards...

I've been using UNSHARPEN MASK, under"ENHANCE>>UNSHARPEN MASK. There is no SMART SHARPEN option that I can see with my Photoshop Elements 11. Although I did try another image with "ENHANCE>>ADJUST SHARPNESS" and noticed a selection for the type of blur, selecting Gaussian Blur works well.

I do appreciate everyone's input.

Maybe its just me but I seem to notice a lot of color fringing. Now I don't know if color fringing is a cause for concern on A-Net (their critique guide didn't explicitly explain their policy on color fringing).

Where at? I don't see any obvious fringing.

It is a cause for concern if visible enough. I don't see anything in those shots that would warrant a rejection for fringing.

High in frame. Can't comment much on quality right now, but maybe some heat haze?

Don't take my word on it. As I said, I can't comment too much on quality right now (on this monitor).

Crop doesn't really work for me. The engine off-center feels strange, and the landing gear doesn't really make up for it.

Just my opinion, though.

I agree. However, I think it would be fine with a portrait orientation as long as it's a decent size after cropping.

I've redone the edit and now uploaded this. I was debating a portrait crop but when I've done this before it seems they can't make up their mind on the dimensions so this I am doing as 4:3 at 1024.

What dimensions, sizing would they accept as portrait?

Who can't make up their mind(s) on the dimensions?

The exact same dimensions and sizing as landscape, just rotated by 90 degrees.

Thank you to all for your input, I've had a few more successful uploads and sorted the sharpening issue I've been having, I think.

Here is another I've added to the queue and would like some critique.

Could use more contrast to my eye and slightly high in frame.

Could someone point out where the oversharpening is in this rejection?

Does not look too bad to me, but areas that probably did it are the main lettering, the fuselage at the tail join, spots on the logo and the edge of the rudder.

Sorry for the delay. Thanks mjgbtv. My weakness is not knowing all the tools of Photoshop Elements as well as I need to. I've been going over the Adobe video tutorials amongst others in getting to know PSE better.

Nothing in the database since 2007 on this aircraft. Does the overcast but damp conditions negatively affect the image for screening?

not the best conditions Craig, it looks dark and I'd say CW needed too.
Sharpening is also questionable.

Thanks ghajdufi, I'll pull it. I thought the wet conditions and close proximity to the subject when shot added to the appeal, but I suppose we always think our shots are better than they really are sometimes.
