Post-/pre-screening Spompert

Sat Apr 25, 2015 8:35 am

Hello this photo from Lufthansa was rejected because of oversharpened and grainy. I am not an expert so I think I see some jaggies around the flaps and the bird-symbol on the tail. Can somebody help me with this? And the grainy parts, are the in the shadow areas of the plane or just in the sky (that's easy to fix). Reducing size might help as well I guess?

This one below was rejected for being too soft, are there any parts that should be sharpened more or just the whole plane?

Thanks for any advice!

Yup, I see them there.

I'd say the shadow parts of the aircraft.

The landing gear seems very soft; it may be affected by the jet blast. Sharpen the gear and apply some for the inner flaps on the wings as well.

A bit, yes. Overall not bad, though. I'd say borderline. Should be an easy fix.

Agreed.

You don't need to worry about the gear, since it's behind the jet blast. Screeners take that into account. Overall, it looks just a tad soft.

It's also high in frame, though. And I'm not personally too crazy about the framing, but don't know how the site feels about it.

The China shot is very nice, just needs to be sharpened more.

The Lufthansa shot is just a tad over-sharpened. The contrast seems slightly harsh too. It should be an easy fix.

Thanks for the advices, I have improved the photos and have re-uploaded them. Now I have this photo which was rejected for oversharpened and contrast. Where is it oversharpened? It's a bit strange since it was first rejected for having a vignetting-problem which I solved. The issue of oversharpening was never mentioned but now it is. And is the contrast too high or too low? Maybe the nose is the problem where there is a lot of light while the rest of the plane is a bit darker?

Thanks
Stefan

It looks oversharpened all over, but it's particularly visible in the titles.

After experimenting with the contrast slider I would suggest the shot looks better if you reduce it.

Hi Stefan, looks like you've made some fantastic progress since February! Keep up the excellent work!!

As for the Skyteam A330 I agree with what was said above - it does look slightly OS all over. Contrast is just a little bit too harsh, should be fine if you tone it down just a little.

Thanks Amrit! Good to hear that! Sometimes I still have difficulties seeing the flaws in the photos. This time I'll re-edit the China A330.

Hello, this one was rejected for grainy, oversharpened and quality affected by heathaze. Now this was my third try and the heathaze was never mentioned. I see a lot of heathaze distortion but that is from the jetstream and would not be the problem right? And can somebody advice me on the oversharpened parts? I try to sharpen it more bcause it was rejected on the second try for soft and even blurry. I also reduced the grain in the air. Are the problems with this photo solvable or should I spend my time on other ones? Thanks

Hi Stefan,

yes the "heathaze" is coming from the jetstream, so generally it should not be a problem or rejection reason.

Unfortunately it affects a the windows & the cheatline as well which is a bit disturbing to me personally to be honest.

The shot is overall a bit oversharpened, especially visible on the titles & the windows.
And yes the sky is a bit grainy.

Overall it is a nice shot and possibly woth another edit, although if a shot does not make it in the third try I do normally leave it. But i know others that tried more and were sucessful in the end.
So up to you.

The sky is grainy and seems to have a hint of vignetting. There are jaggies on a lot of the "KLM" branding.

Thanks all, here is a new edit

http://i57.tinypic.com/10xv98h.jpg

I reduced grain in the sky and now the titles are less sharp, as well as the cheatline which had some jaggies also. I would like to now if some of you still see oversharpened parts. Other feedback is welcome too, before I re-upload.

Thanks

It looks ok. I can't tell if it's level right now so check that out.

The heat haze is a little distracting though. Not much you can do about that.

On the first image I see the jaggies easily on the "N" of the main Logo and also see a small halo on the cheatline. I see no grain whatsoever.

On the second one my experience is that it is easy to get a soft rejection on shots from behind. Why? I have no clue.

best,

The KLM747 has been rejected again for the jetwash. I didn't get this rejection in the first two rejections so there is probably some difference in how the screeners see it as a problem or not. Personally I like the photo and would love to have it online. Is there something I could do about the jetwash? I could try to cut some part off but that will be difficult. I can also give up now and spent time on other ones.

Thanks for any input.

Jetwash is very subjective. If that was the only reason, I'd try an appeal.

Hi there,

After sharpening as adviced for rejection soft I now have this one rejected for being blurry. Can anyone give me advice on which parts are blurry so I can try to fix this. I have problems spotting these parts. Do they mean the whole plane maybe? Thanks

I think so. It looks like the whole frame is slightly blurry or out of focus.

Well some parts are soft, some look oversharpened. This often happens when the shot itself is slightly or partly blurry.

Hi Julien,

Could you be a bit more specific about the blurry/soft parts? Thanks.

Hi Stefan,
hope you are doing well.

Quoting spompert (Reply 19):

titles, cheat-line, front-door.

The best way to check for blurriness is to zoom in at 100% at the original.

The English 'China Cargo' lettering still looks weird.

Yes. Generally there is not much you can do against blurriness, apart from maybe choosing a very small size and trying to hide it. Which might work sometimes...
