Pre-screening: High-res Upload

Hi guys,

After a year of uploading 1024 and 1200px sized images, I've decided I'd try one high-res upload.

This is one of my favourite images of all time, caught at Changi Airport's Terminal 1. I was lucky to have her dock at the gate right in front of my eyes.

This was resized to 1400px from a 5000px source file. Any thoughts?

Hi Yang,

I am sorry to say but the quality does not seem to be there for such a large upload.

It is currently soft.

Generally when I decide which size I upload my shots I look at how sharp the shot (e.g. the details like the smaller titles and so on) is in the orginal version. I know others do it by file size, but to me that is not an absolutely certain indicator.

Actually I did my first 1.400 px upload after 2,5 years when I had more than 200 shots online

But of course others did it way earlier and were sucessful. But generally I would recommend to wait until you have a decent acceptance ratio.
Don't take this as critique, is not meant to be personal as I have no clue about your acceptance ratio anyway.

Hi Yang,

Unfortunately, I feel like this one doesn't have the quality at 1500 wide. I want to say it's slightly oversharpened, but I think it's just an overall lack of quality, maybe due to shooting through the glass at T1. It's also a little dark. I'd give it a shot at 1200px.

Yeah, my acceptance ration kinda sucks now... But doesn't hurt to try, does it...?

How about this one then? I'm not too optimistic on this one but I'd still like to know the standards of high-res screening...

The first one is very soft, dark, needs some CW, and has a red cast.

The second one needs some CW and the tail seems soft.

Hello Yang,

I don't think you need lots of photos accepted with small sizes before they accept larger shots. I only have 28 photos online now and 11 of them are 1400's. So the main thing is the quality of the original and the crop you have to make and the circumstances have to be good also. I am not really good at giving feedback on photos (my acceptance ratio is 50%) but somehow the registrations and the far horizontal stabilizer on the last one look a bit out of focus. You can check with the original to see which parts have the "worst" quality. Great photo though!

Hmm... Maybe I should post the original to get a feedback on it instead before I do any further re-editing?

I would say the original looks okay and is pretty sharp, although very dark. I am not sure but it looks like the horizontal stabilizer is affected by heathaze. I would try it 1200 wide myself. Somehow your edit seems a bit "different" compared to how they mostly turn out with my edits, but not sure why that is. But don't take my advice to seriously, I am an absolute beginner

Hmm it might be a problem that you shot it behind glass and that is degrading the quality.

Of course not. But I would work on this problem (getting a better acceptance ratio) first instead of setting the bar even higher (high-resolution pics need to be pretty flawless for this site).
But it was just a well-meant advice, although I was pretty sure that not everybody appreciates it.

Generally nothing wrong with trying and choosing your own way.

I would try high res images with smaller aircraft closer in where there is ample detail. Large aircraft have to be shot further away from the camera and this reduces detail. It's simple, the detail size is the same on both large and small aircraft so a smaller aircraft shot closer shows more of it.

When you are taking shots from the Terminal One Observation Hall which glass panels are you shooting through? Are you aware that the panels with the red triangle on them are clear glass?

Pretty much any panel; I try to switch positions in the viewing mall.
