Pre Screening - Sausten

Mon Oct 26, 2015 9:18 am

Hi guys,

I'd really appreciate thoughts on these two shots currently in the queue. My 'radar' has been really off lately in terms of sharpness and as a result I have little confidence in judging softness/ oversharpened at the moment.

I'm bad at judging sharpening, but to me they both look a little soft. The Cathay has some odd artifacts around the left MLG as well.

The first is only slightly soft - not bad at all.
The second seems passable to me.

Agreed. Some of the other sharpened lines look kinda weird too, like the windows and titles.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Thanks for the feedback guys. I (like many) value the opinions of those who are brave enough to share in this forum.

Yeah looking at the cathay I may try another edit.

Any chance of an opinion in this one.

I've had a few edits rejected and can't quite seem to get this shot right. The original raw is sharp enough (i've edited worse to get accepted here) so I am convinced it can 'make it' into the db. I believe it is a really interesting shot which would be a great addition to the website.

Any feedback welcomed.

Cheers again.

That feels like a really strange crop. Not on my screening comp right now but it just seems low quality. The lighting is pretty bad and there's not much you can do about it.

If the LAN wasn't cropped that much on the bottom, I would say the crop is okay, but with engine and nose landing gear cropped this way, I don't think it have chances to a.net, but trying doesn't hurt. Its a interesting composition with both Dreamliners and the ATC.

You're fighting bad light, which will always make things difficult when editing for a.net. That said, you're pretty close. The sharpening is odd though, with some noticeable artifacts at bright/dark transition edges.

I thought the same thing when I first looked at it.

Steve, I'm not sure how you're sharpening photos, but they seem to be coming out quite weird.

Steve, I'm not sure how you're sharpening photos, but they seem to be coming out quite weird.

My usual process is the same as outlined in as.net's photo editing guide. Select area to sharpen, duplicate layer, USM 200% 0.2 pxls, repeat if necessary, etc. This has been the workflow I have followed for years. With the NZ shot I also used the magic eraser to try remove some oversharpened areas (bright/dark transitions) before flattening layers.

Not much I could do about that... just the angle from where the shot was taken.

Ha... but not close enough yet.

Thanks again all. Will have another play with it this week.

Well of the two original shot posted in this thread, one made it and the other was rejected.

The first shot (etihad) was accepted

The cathay shot was judged to be oversharpened.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi again,
I've tried another version of the Air New Zealand 787 shot I had posted earlier. This shot is a little later in the sequence. I believe the crop is OK but would appreciate other opinions. Please also comment on sharpness ( I can never tell) and any other issues.

The light and crop on this one is much better than the other shot. Can't comment on sharpness though as I'm not on my editing screen.

Looks soft and overexposed to these eyes.
