General Help On Pictures Is Needed

Mon Nov 09, 2015 5:13 pm

Hi folks,

First about myself. I'm one of the worst Anet photograthers ever. I'm with the site since 2003 and with over 2800 photos at Database https://www.airliners.net/search/phot...Russian%20APT&distinct_entry=true, however my acceptance ratio is just 26% (sometimes even lower and my last uploads were rejected all) and it seems I clearly do omething wrong. My experience on the site doesn't allow me unambiguously suggest what this wrong is exatly. So I would appreciate you comments on the list of my last rejections - what can I improve with it to return my average 70% as it was years ago.

1) Oversharpened and grainy, looks like a big crop
2) Oversharpened and low contrast
3) Oversharpened, grainy and poor light
4) Blurry, low contrast
5) Low contrast (best one I have seen so far, should be easy to fix)
6) Oversharpened (should be easy to fix)
7) Looks grainy and blurry to me (camera shake) poor light and unflattering
8) Oversharpened (great shot)
9) Grainy
10) Oversharpened
11) Blurry from lack of depth. Obvious what you were trying to do, its a nice shot, but not for A.net
12) Low contrast, smeared from noise reduction, overall poor quality
13) Seems pretty good, maybe appeal?
14) Oversharpened and low contrast (should be easy to fix)
15) Shot into the light, looks overworked
16) Blurry, Oversharpened, Dark, looks like another big crop.

Obviously the easiest thing to fix would be the sharpening. I would start with some more basic images to get a baseline, you are obviously pushing the envelope, but your overall quality isn't there.

Fyodor, when did the problems start?

Have you changed your screen, camera or lens recently?

I have to say, I haven't seen all the photos you posted (on a slow connection at the moment) but most of Royal's responses seem accurate.

Cheers

Well, year ago I've added 1Dx to my staff but still work a lot with 5DMk3.

First time in 2008 and since that time it happens year to year. But after 2012 I think it is my worst rate. Few months ago it was around 50%. And in 2008 up to 80%.

Thanks a lot for your time. Sadly its generally repeat the rejection reasons I already had - not much new. Sharpering is a good advise - thanks! However it was always very tricky thing - this boder between sharp and soft. It is not calculated somehow on objective criteria. One screener can see it oversharp - just a quarter step back and another will consider it as soft. Indeed if they are both go as strict as possible.

Well - I've started 12 years and 2876 images ago   and I was never focused on something basic. Sorry for that.
But I'd say 6, 8 or 14 are rather basic - don't they?

I would not have expected any new rejection reasons, I was only giving you my opinion. The reasons are very clear, are they not? Some are easy fixes, some are not. It should seem very obvious that you are over sharpening your pictures; why not edit a couple with less sharpening and wait for the results. You can then adjust from there until you get comfortable again. I would strongly disagree with the statement that "One screener can see it oversharp - just a quarter step back and another will consider it as soft." I am not sure what a 'quarter step' is, but if your images are that sensitive to sharpening there is either a core problem with your workflow or something is lost in translation.

Perhaps you can post an unedited, RAW shot, and we could help you edit it? If you would like to email me directly you can at [email protected]

Good luck.

Thanks a lot but I not sure it will help. I just get the picture you did - not the way how you did. I can see your photos easely on the site.

The major problem (just my problem indeed) that in the list above at least half of the images looks fine for me, same quality as regulary accepted (also mine before). And for the rest I'd say most of them are boreder case but could be accepted with friendly approach from the screener (especially to relatively rare shots which I have some).

You may suggest that 12 years of experience is enough time to understand the objective criteria for the frequent uploader. And photogs skills on workflow usually don't disappear suddenly. But...
