Delta 767-300ER EWR to CDG

Sat Jul 16, 2016 8:58 pm

Delta Flight # 20
May 2016
Tail # 1504 - 767-300ER (G)
Scheduled Departure: (EWR) 9:13PM
Actual Departure: (EWR) 9:51PM
Scheduled Arrival: (CDG) 10:25AM
Actual Arrival: (CDG) 11:07AM

Booked this flight using Sky Miles. It was not my first choice, as EWR isn't all that convenient for me but the departure time was a better choice than earlier flights out of JFK. Checked in on line and by-passed all airport kiosks and went straight to the gate. Anticipated a very long TSA line (this was May 2016 and at the height of the long lines). Delta uses a rotunda in Terminal B all to itself. The security screening area is just past the main food court serving the terminal. It was large (and there was no one there!) The CDG flight is the last departure for Delta out of EWR for the day. Walked down to the bar next to the Sky Club and had a quick bite to eat (terrible food) and then proceeded to the rotunda. The Amsterdam flight had returned to the gate twice for a mechanical issue, and there were a few 717's parked at gates but otherwise quiet. Other than the sad little duty free shop, the gate areas were empty, shops closed and passengers only there for the 9:13PM departure to CDG.

Boarding was chaotic despite being done by group as many passports had to be checked by gate agents.

The aircraft was a 1991 build, ex-Gulf Air 767-300ER. It was clean, looked well maintained, and had been refurbished, as I think all Delta 767-300ER's are now. Took my seat in the mid-20's and found it to be adequately padded and comfortable for what was to be a 6 hour 35 minute ride to Paris. Departure was delayed by about 35-40 minutes as one passenger bound for Sofia, Bulgaria didn't board and the luggage had to be removed from the hold.

Taxi and take off where relatively quick for Newark. Traffic seemed to be less intense at that time of the evening. We were airborne at 10:10PM. Flight was smooth throughout with virtually no turbulence. Drinks and dinner were served quickly by an efficient and friendly crew. Again, nothing to write home about, but nothing wrong either. Pre-landing, a meager breakfast was served. Descent into CDG was smooth and we landed alongside the Terminal 2 complexes and taxied quickly to our gate, passing a handful of Air France 777-300ERs and one A330-200 taking off.

Overall, a good flight despite the slight delay. The Delta facility at EWR is perfectly fine. Clean, if a little sterile. Concessions are few and far between but it is the last departure of the day for the airline so there is that if you are looking to avoid crowds.
