Singapore Airlines - five hours delay from New York to Frankfurt

Fri Aug 26, 2016 5:23 pm

My vacation in the US was great and very relaxing.

On Thursday evening I head for JFK looking quite forward to my flight with Singapore Airlines back to Frankfurt. But then things go slightly wrong. Apparently, we departed from JFK without having received our Oceanic clearance to cross the Atlantic. As a result, we spend about an hour circling over Newfoundland. And as a result of that, we also end up having to divert to Heathrow because we are short of fuel. And what starts out as a short stop in Heathrow to refuel quickly turns into a delay of five hours. But I made it home just the same!

Next time either take a Carmel Taxi which you pre order for about $60 or the bus from 42nd Street / Grand Central for about $20.

It's nuts to go by subway and depressing.

Fully agree with you. This airline is over rated and not one of my favorite ones anymore.

Nice read and pictures, thanks for sharing.

I've only flown SQ twice, the inaugural SQ A380 to SYD and the last SQ 345 to SIN from EWR, both were excellent flights with great crews.

By the sounds of it the service on this late departure is totally wrong, there should be the option of a snack or express meal as many passengers, especially those travelling for next day meetings, will want to maximise sleep.

How on earth you flight was allowed to depart without oceanic clearance is beyond me, how on earth does that happen??

Thanks again.

Every flight across the Atlantic departs without oceanic clearance, you always pick it up in the air. Only times you can get it on the ground just prior to departure is when you are at places like CYYT and EINN.

Thanks for another great report. It's a shame that the glory days of Singapore Airlines seem to be behind it. I guess that sometimes, it is better to focus on providing a solid, reliable product (like KLM for example) which can be consistently achieved, rather than setting high expectations and falling short.

While browsing your blog, I also came across the report for the first leg, in the opposite direction. One thing which stood out was the fact that you had to pay for Wifi. I was flying Icelandair the other day, and Wifi was free for Saga Class (Business) and Economy Comfort passengers. I know that a lot of airlines charge Business Class passengers for Wifi, but I really think it cheapens the service somewhat. Just a personal thing.

Suppose some passengers in the flight were actually going to LHR (or LON at least), would they be allowed to deplane and just finish their trip without the connecting flight? Would they be refunded for the leg they didn't take? (if the diversion wasn't their fault and it was just much more convenient to stay in LHR rather than to fly to FRA only to fly back to LHR)

I was watching your flight in real time on flight radar. I saw the circling as well as the descent from 38K to 34K. I was scared something strange was unfolding (and I posted about it on here at the time).

Why? From 50th/8th I just took the E train straight to Jamaica and it was super easy and cost me like 2 bucks. It's one subway and doesn't take that long. Transferring to the LIRR takes just as long and costs way more.
