Alitalia A330/777 New York - Naples

Sun Jul 02, 2017 8:07 pm

This was my second trip to Italy, the first time I had flown Delta to MXP. This time we would be flying into Naples. The only nonstop from the United States to Naples is on Meridiana. The flight departed too early in the afternoon, around 3pm or so from JFK. We ended up with Delta and Alitalia. We were scheduled to depart around 7pm from SYR, with a connection in JFK and FCO arriving in NAP the following afternoon at 330pm. A week before the flight there was a schedule change to our flight to JFK, and we would no longer have enough time to make the connection as we would have to change from T4 to T1 at JFK. We got rebooked on a flight leaving several hours earlier to JFK. I had flown home a few days before from Arizona, and left my camera in my dorm so i only had my phone for pics

The flight to JFK was a quick 51 minutes. Since we had been rebooked on the earlier flight to JFK we had a 9 hour layover. We decided to take the airtrain and subway into the city for a few hours before coming back to JFK for our 1005pm departure to FCO

Boarding began at 915pm, 50 minutes before departure. Boarding was done by zone. There was a long line in the jetway and it took about 15 minutes to board. At every seat was a pillow and blanket and a headset for the PTVs. Once everyone had boarded and the door was closed, a safety video was played in English and Italian as we began to pushback. It was a busy night at JFK and once the engines were started, we taxied a short distance before coming to a stop and waiting for about 20 minutes to wait for our taxi clearance. We finally began the slow taxi to 22R. After a 35 minute taxi we were ready for takeoff. About 30 minutes after takeoff, the dinner service started. Since we departed so late the dinner service was completed fairly quickly. The choices were pasta or chicken. I went with the pasta. Once the dinner trays were collected the lights were turned off and almost everyone fell asleep fairly quickly. The flight attendants came through with water throughout the flight. An hour before landing a small breakfast was served. Shortly after this we began our descent into FCO

Once we deplaned in FCO we had a little over in an hour until our flight to NAP was scheduled to depart. We found out that our bags had only been checked through to FCO not NAP. So we had to go through passport control, and then to baggage claim. By the time we got there our bags were waiting for us. We then had to change terminals to check the bags to NAP and then go through security again. By the time we got to the gate, boarding was almost complete and we were one of the last to board the bus that would take us to our A319. This flight was very short and about 30 minutes after departing FCO we were taxing to the gate in NAP. Just like in FCO deplaning was by airstairs, followed by a bus to the baggage claim. One of the bags we had to recheck in FCO did not make it to NAP. It did not arrive until the following afternoon

The flight was very short, so there was no service, and soon after takeoff the captain already made an announcement about our arrival into Naples

We were in Italy for 10 days, it was a great trip that went by too fast and before I knew it , it was time to head back

The boarding process on the two flights from FCO-NAP and NAP-FCO were the same. There was no real process and everyone just boarded when they wanted to. They also started boarding only about 10 minutes before we were scheduled to depart and both flights ended up leaving late

Once everyone had boarded, the doors were closed we pushed back and the engines were started. Runway 24 was in use, but we taxied over to runway 6. After holding short for about 5 minutes and waiting for traffic to arrive and then depart runway 24, we were next in line for departure. After takeoff we made a left turn and climbed up to 20,000 feet for the short 33 minute flight up to Rome

After landing in FCO we had 2 hours until the flight to JFK was scheduled to depart. After going through passport control, we grabbed some lunch and then headed to gate E11 where boarding started at 2pm for our 250 departure

Once I got to my seat, I was surprised to find a very small and outdated PTV, and no plug or USB to charge electronics. I was expecting it as the A330 on the way to FCO had power as well as a newer PTV. There was also no Wi-Fi on the plane. A lot of people around me were asking the flight attendants where the plugs were. The flight was full so boarding took a while. We began our pushback right ontime and were soon taxing. Takeoff was powerful and we were soon climbing to our cruising altitude. About an hour into the flight, lunch was served. I got the pasta. It was similar to the food on the outbound flight. Following lunch window shades were closed and the cabin was dark. The light on my TV was broken and it was pretty dark and hard to see. With the TV not working and no Wi-Fi it proved to be a long flight across the Atlantic. About 90 minutes before landing flight attendants came through with calzones and drinks. An hour before landing we made a turn to the north east and flew just south of BOS before turning south back to JFK and starting our descent. We made a hard landing on 31R at 623pm. By the time we had taxied over to T1 there was still another AZ 777 at our gate. We taxied down towards 13R before turning around and holding for about 15 minutes for our gate to open. Deplaning was slow and once we had gotten off, we headed to customs which was busy as there was an AF A380 that landed right after we did. We then grabbed our bags and headed to the airtrain to take us to T4 where our DL flight was scheduled to depart to SYR. By the time we got to T4, they had changed our flight to T2. We had two options, go through security at T4 and then take a bus to T2 or back to the airtrain and then to T2. As we were already at T4 and near security when we saw they had changed our gate we decided to just go through security there. That was a mistake. The whole process took 45 minutes and that was with PreCheck. The regular line was at least twice as long if not more. Many people were complaining and saying how they would miss their flight. The answer from TSA was to “deal with it, and next time get here earlier”, even though there was at least 5 – 10 TSA agents just standing around talking to each other. Once we were finally through security we had to walk to the other end of the terminal to where the bus leaves from to take passengers between T4 and T2. By the time we got to our gate they had already started boarding the flight to SYR

About 6 weeks before the flight the employees of Alitalia rejected a deal to help the financially struggling airline and they filed for bankruptcy. With the future of the airline unsure I am glad that I was able to fly on AZ. The two domestic flights between FCO and NAP were short and no service was done and there is not much to say. On the flights between JFK and FCO, there was a big difference between there A330 and 777. The A330 had a PTV with everything that would be expected including TV shows, games, movies and map. There was also power and Wi-Fi. However the 777 had none of this. Just a small outdated PTV with limited movies and the light on mine was broken. AZ uses the 777 on flights from LAX to FCO and South America to FCO. Some of these flights are over 12 hours and I cannot imagine a flight that long on such an outdated plane. The food was typical for Y class, but I remember DL having better food when I flew them to MXP 2 years ago. The crews on AZ were all very helpful and friendly except for the FCO-NAP flight. All in all while I was glad to be able to try out AZ. I am not sure that I would fly them again and if I did I would steer clear of the 777

Am I correct that the legroom is tight?
Was it hot in Naples? I assume you went in July? Was it crowded? They say not to go in July / August but that is the best weather. Would love to go to the Amalfi Coast.

Nice to see a picture of SYR. I went to college in Oswego and took many flights from there.

The color of the headrests on your Alitalia flight were a little too garish for me. The food looked okay - nothing spectacular.

I'm not too sure AZ will be around in the next 6-12 months, so thanks for posting your commentary and pictures!
