Ok, so "narrative" refers to the post, not the video itself, is that right? Like it can be just the flight video without being some sort of vlog....

It refers to the post. You can never just post a link and a few sentences. There needs to be some text description.

This is the absolute minimum:

Hello Moderators
Greetings
I can see that one of my old posts has got a reply. I got a notification sent to my email.
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1403993
But upon viewing the topic, I can see that the report is 'Locked'. what does this mean? why am I not able to see the reply and why is it locked?
I spend a lot of time and effort to create such reports and it is quite a shame that if such items get locked after certain point in time.
Thanks and regards
Varun

It is a rule across the forum — threads inactive for longer than six months should remain dormant unless the user first receives moderator approval ("thread bumps"). In this case, a user bumped your thread (more than a year old) with a comment unrelated to your trip report or aviation. It is at the moderator's discretion to remove those posts and lock the topic, which the moderator has chosen to do here.

The rule exists because the old website automatically locked inactive topics after just a few weeks. This new site does not, but we compromised at six months, because a large number of users want threads to stay current. It isn't something arbitrary, it's a time frame that we reached after a lot of discussion about two years ago.

We certainly don't enforce this to deter you or others from posting. You regularly post excellent trip reports, and we don't want to discourage that in any way. We are just enforcing a rule that's an attempt to appease the majority of users, but we realize that it isn't always ideal.

Thanks for the clarification.
"" In this case, a user bumped your thread (more than a year old) with a comment unrelated to your trip report or aviation" -> So I reckon one of the moderators has reviewed this comment and deemed to be either spam or similar?
What if a user did want to comment about the report? How would he/she go about that, if the report is older than 6 months old?

It's up to our discretion as to whether we let the comment stand. Because the Trip Reports Forum works a bit differently than the others, I tend to err on the side of allowing comments to somewhat older reports, assuming it's some sort of constructive comment. It depends on a few factors for me (how long the trip report was inactive, if the comment is worthy of bumping the thread, if it's a report worthy of being bumped, etc.), but I don't know what sort of process the other moderators use to evaluate these things.

Users can always email us at [email protected] asking to reply to an old thread, and that's the surest bet for a yes/no beforehand. We certainly don't take a "do not post to old threads" stance, we just want to make sure the bump is in the best interest of those who read the forum. I realize that's fairly subjective, but I suppose that's why we're here.
