One of the things I had planned while on this trip to New Zealand was to try and find again a Mil Mi-8 Hip that was on static display near Taupo on the North Island.

When I first saw it in 2006 it was white with blue and yellow stripes.

A bit of googling showed it still existed and had been repainted since I last saw it.
I had found out that it had come from Cuba originally and the story goes that Fidel Castro had flown in it. Shame it wasn't painted up in it's original Cuban markings.

It is now in a blue and yellow scheme. and is at the Helistar Hub Cafe.

So after having i look around it. When I was there you could go into the main cabin, but the flight deck was closed off, but there is a porthole you can look through.

So while there, made inquiries about the scenic flights in a Robinson that was operating scenic flights over Lake Taupo.

We had planning just to look at the Mil Mi-8, but since we are here we will go on a flight. Shame it wasn't the Mil Mi-8, but it's flying days are well and truly over.

Was NZ $179 for 15 minutes per person or BZ $99 for 9 minutes per person, so went on the 9 minute flight.

So after watching the safety video it was time to board the aircraft. I was sat at the front next to the pilot and dad was sat in the back.

We flew to the edge of Lake Taupo (the longer flight goes out over the lake), then over the town and back around past Huka Falls before landing.

Definitely worth it to get a different view of the local area.

Wow I wouldn't have expected to see a Mil Mi-8 in New Zealand of all places. Last December (2017) year my mother and I toured New Zealand had I known there was a Mil Mi-8 in Taupo we would have had a look at it, although we did visit the Macca's with a DC-3.

I see from your previous TR that you did Ski plane trip from Mt Cook That would've been a good experience. We did a helicopter ride in Mt Cook on an AS350 we we're surprised that being December there was still some snow on the higher mountains.

Great TR series btw.
