Chicago! SAN-MDW on WN and Links To Pictures & Video

Wed Jun 12, 2019 5:39 am

Greetings to all!!

My husband and I had Southwest tickets we needed to use soon (from a postponed trip), and we decided to go to Chicago over Memorial Day weekend, both of us being able to arrange a four-day weekend.

I'll give you the plane details, and then a link that (hopefully) will take you to my Flickr page with pictures and videos.

OUTBOUND:
Friday, May 24, 2019
Southwest #603 SAN-MDW
737-7L9 N7817J

The former criers employed by the airport to ensure that LAX-bound passengers got back on the bus to go to the Commuter Terminal are now employed to proclaim the necessity of checking your departure gate, as there are not one, not two, but THREE different security check-points, and how important that is to check! Today Chicago was out of Gate 1 and Sacramento out of Gate 2. We got through security quickly, and it was a fairly normal boarding. A full flight, of course - no empty seats. Our seatmate slept the whole way. We had a mostly smooth flight, and arrived at Gate B15 after a smooth landing. Luggage pick-up was quick, and we took the orange line into downtown.

Hotel: The Silversmith. HIGHLY recommended. Great location, VERY comfortable beds, and friendly staff.

Recommendations:

1) The Sears Tower (officially the Willis Tower, but locals never call it that) at 8 AM. You might stand in line until it opens, but it will be a non-stop express to the elevator after that!

2) Chicago 360 at The Hancock Center building. The crowds stampede to the Sears Tower, but this remains somewhat lesser visited. Shhh! Keep that part a secret...

There are four albums, one for each day. Please enjoy!

RETURN:

Southwest #1263 MDW-SAN

Watching a giant thunderstorm approach the city from the west is a surreal experience, and from the 94th and 95th floors of the Hancock building, we were hopefully it would all have worked itself out by the time we got to Midway airport.

It did. Our flight was scheduled as "on-time", and a quick drop of our bags meant we were on our way. Security was easy enough, but the terminal was PACKED! Delayed flights all over the place, but we were good to go!

Until it came time to board. We were called to board, but no plane was there. The two of us were #40 and 41, so we were at the front of the second line, closest to the woman getting ready to check us in. She was able to tell us that our original incoming plane - from DTW - was delayed, so we were being switched to the arriving STL flight.

Then another Southwest employee got on the intercom and literally read the passengers the riot act about delaying us further. Yep, he went into a spiel about "possibly having to cancel this flight if we can't get it out on time, because San Diego is really strict with its arrival curfew, so no wasting time - get in, get settled, and get going before it's too late!"

I knew this was incorrect, but I have a suspicion he wanted that plane boarded ASAP - and I wasn't about to say anything! But everyone was anxious to get going anyway, so we probably set a Southwest record for quickest full-plane boarding time!

Lord have mercy, bins with extra space - that helped too. I know that no one is bringing back free bags, but no fights over space mean no delay in departing...just sayin'...

Arrived home safely and went to work early the next day.

I hope you enjoyed!!
