Tripreport: New Years Eve in Charlotte, NC - Lufthansa Business Class including Video

Mon Jan 06, 2020 4:12 pm

Hello everybody,

a last trip was on schedule for 2019. Quite spontaneously -we booked at the end of October. At that time there was a travel deal with Lufthansa to the USA. There was a choice between Boston, Chicago and Charlotte. Due to the expected temperatures at the turn of the year, we chose Charlotte, even if this is perhaps the least well known among the destinations.

This time even with a flight from our home airport Leipzig, it went on December 27th. First in the CRJ900 of the Lufthansa Cityline to Munich. Despite the experience with the Leipzig Lounge on our flight to Zurich, we decided to visit again. And this time we were greeted warmly by all employees and actually felt welcome and not as a disturbing element.

In the “Business Class” of the CRJ everyone has a row for themselves and for breakfast there was cereal and fresh orange juice.

When we arrived in Munich, we drove with the automatic transport system to Terminal 2 satellite - our plane should depart from Gate L21. We used the two-hour stay to visit the Lufthansa Business Lounge opposite from Gate L11.

The start of our machine was delayed by about an hour, because when the systems in the cockpit were started up, an indicator lamp with regard to the left engine came on. After consulting the LH Technik and a half-hour engine run, the boarding could begin – everything was fine.

Everything about the lounge and the ten-hour flight to Charlotte, including a cockpit visit, is available as a video on YouTube:

The immigration into Charlotte was a bit lengthy due to only a few counters and also here we got the question from the border guard what we want to do in Charlotte without any relatives and friends here - he was not the last one who asked us more or less horrified ;-)

The central Charlotte Transportation Center can be reached by bus for $ 2.20 every 20 minutes. The journey takes about 25 minutes. Our hotel was then reached after another 150 meters on foot. Our room was on the 10th floor of the Hyatt House Charlotte. A spacious room including a small kitchenette.

The next morning - even if we were awake already 7:00 am - greeted us with a wonderful sunrise and the thermostat should easily reach 20 ° C in the next few days.

So from breakfast - included in the price - rather American, but all in all very tasty. Then a first walk through the city center along the skyscrapers of the capital of North Carolina, which has a population of 800,000. There were also a few leftovers from Christmas on the streets.

The streets of the city center are more characterized by restaurants. If you want to shop clothes, you have to use the numerous malls outside the city.

And even if you pull the circles around the center a little larger, you will find numerous beautiful parks, churches and artistically designed squares.

For New Years Eve we had already booked in Germany two tickets for an event on the rooftop bar of a neighboring hotel, the "Fahrenheit Charlotte". From 10pm to 2pm there was a great view of the city with drinks, snacks and music.

We also wanted to maintain a German tradition in the USA - the New Year's walk. And again we found new corners that were very worth seeing.

The US fire trucks are always a feast for the eyes. Here is a small selection:

On January 2nd, 2020, we had to go home again. At 1pm we had to leave our hotel room. Fortunately, at Douglas International Airport, we could check in at the Lufthansa counter from 2 p.m. for the 7 p.m. flight, so that at least we were rid of our bags. In CLT there is no lounge for Lufthansa Business Class guests - only a $ 15 voucher, which can only be redeemed in the area of the "D-Gates".

The subsequent return flight took place on time and our connection to Leipzig worked perfectly. What did not work was that our luggage, despite a 1: 45h transfer time, found its way to Leipzig. This arrived by taxi at 10:30 p.m. - who wants to sleep after a long-haul flight ... ;-)

All in all, we can say that Charlotte is a very beautiful, worth seeing and also very clean city. If you don't like loud fireworks on New Year's Eve, this is also the right place and Lufthansa didn't disappoint us on the flights either.

Thanks for reading

Best regards

Great to see you visiting an authentic American town instead of going to New York or Chicago and then telling all of your friends that you have seen "all of America." We need more tourist like you.
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

I so agree...so many times international visitors think the United States end at New York, LA and Miami. Good to see visitors visiting other cities. We definitely need more tourist like you. The US doesn't begin at NY and end at LA. There's a lot more to this country. ATL, DFW, IAH, MSP etc are examples of this. Great TR btw

Very nice. I want to fly Lufthansa out of Charlotte because that is my home airport. I actually had this plane fly over my house and I went to go spot its landing! I try to watch this plane come in whenever I can.

As I said, Charlotte was a spontaneous idea. In retrospect, we were also very happy to have chosen this supposed small town. We were very enthusiastic about the city and especially about the cleanliness, which does not exist in Germany like this. We definitely want to take a look at cities like Houston and Atlanta, but the TWA Hotel at the JFK really appeals us to visit next. ;-)
