PHX-ORD-PDX-LAS-PHX daytrip (United and Southwest) 737-700, 800 & 900

Sat Apr 23, 2022 4:42 am

This was from May 2018. I had just finished the semester, and my finals. During college I stayed through the summers, and continued flight training even though there weren’t any classes during the summer. I had a Southwest gift card I wanted to use. I figured while I had a few days off, I would do a daytrip. The flights I came up with were PHX-ORD-PDX on United, and PDX-LAS-PHX on Southwest. I was starting out this trip with a redeye to ORD. This is only the second time I started out a daytrip with a redeye. Not my favorite thing to do, but the flight was super cheap and I didn’t want to pay much for it. I got to the airport, about an hour before my flight was leaving. Terminal 2 was dead. My flight was the only flight departing, so the terminal was pretty quiet

There was a guy sitting at the gate playing his guitar. It was so annoying considering it was 11:00pm. Eventually half the plane lined up, before they even started boarding. It was a completely full flight, so boarding took a while. The people behind me were talking about how this was there first redeye flight

28A, next to N76516 that departed early the next morning to Newark

We pushed back a few minutes late. Once the engines were started, we began the taxi. They were departing to the west. I was expecting to go off of 25R. But we taxied straight down, and then instead of making a right onto the runway, we turned left and taxied past the end of Terminal 4. We taxied straight across, and departed runway 26. Not sure why, considering 25R was open because a Southwest 737 departed right before us. United usually doesn’t use runway 26. We taxied onto the runway and started a long takeoff roll, we used most of runway 26

We checked in with departure, and were cleared to flight level 210, before being handed off to Albuquerque Center. Eventually we made a turn to the northeast, and headed toward Albuquerque as we climbed up to 35,000ft. Once we leveled off, the flight attendants quickly came through with drinks and snacks. After this, I feel asleep off and on for the entire flight

We quickly taxied around to the southside of the airport

Image

N8613K spent the night, and departed to Denver the next morning

Image

I took the train to the parking garage, and got back in my car almost 24 hours after leaving. This is one of the few daytrips I have done that involved almost 24 hours of flying. I don’t like the idea of starting them out with a redeye though. It makes it a lot more tiring. But in the end, it was a long but fun day of flying
