JFK-ATL/PBI & Diversion to SAV (jetBlue & Delta)

I had plans to go see some family in Atlanta when I had a few days off of work. I was going for one night. There were two flights that I was looking at taking. One was a Delta 737-900, or a jetBlue E190 both from JFK. They both were leaving within 30 minutes of each other. The jetBlue flight had a few more open seats, so I decided to go with it. But that ended up being the wrong choice.

While waiting to board, I was talking to an AA flight attendant that was also taking this flight. Right before boarding the gate agent assigned us our seats. We each got the last row, with no one next to us. The flight wasn’t full so it didn’t take long to get everyone boarded and ready to go

The door was closed at 1:55pm. The captain announced that we were waiting for some connecting bags. We didn’t start pushing for over 20 minutes

As we were taxiing, we came to a stop. We got a reroute due to storms on the way to ATL. We were originally filed over Robbinsville (RBV). They changed it to WAVEY, and then down over the coast. After a few minutes of sitting, we continued the taxi to 13R. The only plane that was ahead of us, was N827JB the plane that was sitting next to us at the gate

We checked in with NY Departure climbing out of 1,000ft, up to 5,0000ft. We were cleared to continue to the climb to 12,000ft, and to proceed to the WAVEY intersection

The closer we got to Atlanta it started to get consistently bumpy

We started the descent, but then leveled off at 14,000ft. I also noticed we had slowed down a little bit and made a turn to the south. Eventually we made a few turns, and it was obvious we were holding. After about 15 minutes the flight attendant came up to me and AA flight attendant, and said that she wanted to let us know that we were diverting to Savannah. This was not what I wanted to hear. I was only spending the night in Atlanta. Obviously the diversion would take a few hours minimum, and would just waste some of the time I had there.

Where we were the weather was decent, and I didn’t realize the weather in ATL was as bad as it was. I was surprised to see this, when I checked

A few minutes later the Captain made an announcement. He said that the weather in ATL was bad, and we were unable to land. Air Traffic Control had put us in a holding pattern, to try and wait out the weather. However we had used up all the extra holding fuel, and we would be diverting to Savannah for more fuel. He expected us to be in SAV in about 25-30 minutes. A few people came up to the flight attendants to ask questions, but most people on the flight didn’t seem to mind that we would be diverting

Once we got to the gate, the captain made an announcement. He said that Atlanta was still in a ground stop. There would be no departures for at least 20 minutes. He said that while we waited, we were also going to get refueled. Originally he said he would try to arrange with the gate agent that we could get off it we wanted to, or stay on board if we wanted. A few minutes later an announcement was made that everyone would have to deplane with our bags, and that there would be an update at 6:00pm

I got off the plane around 5:40pm. I found a place to charge my phone. The E190 doesn’t have anywhere to charge your phone. It was on 30%. I let it charge, while we waited to get back on. A little after 6:00pm, boarding started again

The captain announced that they were planning on a 35 minute flight to Atlanta. It ended up being a little longer. We pushed back at 6:15pm, and had a 6:40 wheels up time. So once we pushed back the engines were started. We sat on the ramp for about 15 minutes before we taxied via taxiway Foxtrot and Echo to Runway 10

An hour and a half after the unexpected detour to SAV, we were cleared for takeoff. They taxied on to the runway, and advanced the throttles while we were still lining up. The pilot was on the rudder a lot back and forth for a few seconds, as we started to accelerate

We were handed off to departure and the pilot thanked the controller for all their help with the diversion

As we were in the turn, we were cleared to the SMALZ intersection on course. A few minutes later we got handed off to Jacksonville Center on 132.92. It was a smooth ride, as we climbed through the clouds

We initially went up to 22,000ft for a few minutes. Then as we got closer to ATL, we went down to 15,000ft

When we touched down I heard a loud noise and out of the corner of my eye, saw a beverage cart go flying down the aisle as soon as we started to slow down. It went a few rows up before it hit a seat and stopped. It also hit that person’s arm. The flight attendant came out right away while we were still on the runway, and grabbed it. She asked if he was okay. He said he was. When we got to the gate she brought him an ice pack, because he was bleeding

N348JB was further delayed going back to JFK. It didn’t end up leaving until after 10:00pm. We ended up getting to ATL two and a half hours late. It definitely could have been worse with the diversion

The next day I originally was planning on going to go back to New York. But I decided to go down to Florida for a few days. The next afternoon, we were back at ATL.

It was a completely full flight, and the crew made multiple announcements about trying to get the flight out ontime. We ended up pushing back 5 minutes late. The engines were started, and we quickly taxi out to runway 27R

We checked in with Departure, climbing out of 2,500ft for 10,000ft on the SMLTZ3 Departure. We were given a 190 heading. Then cleared to SMLTZ and up to 14,000ft before being handed off to Atlanta Center

On this flight we initially climbed to 35,000ft. After spending a few minutes there, it got a little bumpy. We then went down to 33,000ft, and it smoothed out for a little bit

I was on Long Call Reserve. So, I had a 12 hour call out. I spent a few days in Florida, before I got assigned an RDU trip. I got a day and a half notice. So I had plenty of time to get back up to New York. When I looked at the flights, I had two options to get to New York on Delta, one flight to LGA and one flight to JFK. The LGA flight was showing around 30 open seats. The JFK flight had about 5. So I obviously listed myself on the LGA flight. I checked both flights before I left for the airport. They were each delayed a little under 30 minutes. But by the time I got to the gate, the LGA flight was still a little delayed. However the JFK flight was now further delayed until after 10:00pm, over 2 hours from when I was there. I still tried to get on the LGA flight. But the jumpseats were taken, and a lot of passengers from the JFK flight switched over to the LGA flight. There ended up being no seats on the LGA flight, and about 40 open seats on the JFK flight. While it certainly wasn’t the end of the world. It was still annoying, as I would have gotten to the airport later had I known. The two hours passed quickly. As far as my seat goes, it worked out. I ended up with a seat in First Class, with no one next to me. Had I been on the LGA flight, I would have been in a middle seat

The plane had arrived at 5:45pm, and the plane and pilots had been sitting around since then. The original flight attendants were taken off the flight, and they deadheaded on the LGA flight. They ended up sending new flight attendants down from ATL to work our flight. As soon as they got in, boarding started at 9:45pm

The flight attendants made multiple announcements trying to get people to sit down quickly. It wasn’t a full flight, so boarding was pretty quick. The flight attendant made an announcement apologizing for the delay. He said the flight had been delayed. The original flight attendants were taken off the trip. These 3 flight attendants had been sitting airport reserve in ATL. They were 20 minutes from going home, when they got called to Deadhead down to PBI to work this flight. The door was closed at 10:11pm, and we were pushing 2 minutes later. We quickly taxied out to runway 10L. The pilots called that we would be ready upon reaching the runway. We were cleared for takeoff from the full length

We went up to 35,000ft, where we stayed the entire flight. There weren’t any meals on this flight because they had been sitting on the plane in PBI for several hours. Instead, they handed out snack boxes

We crossed 22R, and taxied into the ramp. We got to the gate and stopped. There were no rampers anywhere in sight. The captain said that he called ops, and they were aware of it. He added I can fly you from Florida to New York, but I can’t taxi into the gate without marshallers. We have to sit and wait until they come out. After waiting for about 15 minutes, we pulled into the gate

N526JL had arrived from Santiago, Dominican Republic. It was weird to see a jetBlue plane at Terminal 4. A long time ago jetBlue used to have their international flights arrive at Terminal 4, then from there you would transfer to their old Terminal 6. I did that once when I came back from the Dominican Republic many years ago

It was a quick trip to Atlanta and Florida. The flight ended up being eventful, with the diversion on the way down. The only other time I had diverted was 7 years ago, in 2015. It was also a jetBlue E190. I was flying from JFK-SYR. It was a very eventful flight. It was the day before Thanksgiving. First we boarded, and someone found a pair of scissors. Everyone had to deplane, while TSA came and searched the plane. Then we finally took off, and had an issue with the #1 engine. We had to hold, and eventually diverted to BOS. We eventually got another plane to take us to SYR. Luckily this diversion wasn’t that bad. All things considered it was about as quick of a process as it could be. The crew did a good job of dealing with it, and the rest of the passengers did not seem to be that mad about it.

To what extent are automated marshallers used? Or is that even a thing? And if its a thing, you'd still need wingwalkers, right?

There is definitely some airports it is automated at, but still wing walkers
