Part 2: AF ATH-CDG-ORD (51 Pics)

Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:23 am

Alright, I've finally had sometime to get this part 2 together!
First off I just want to say that Greece is absolutely AMAZING! The whole trip was perfect and the weather was great. It was sunny and in the 70's pretty much the whole week. We stayed at the 5 star Electra Palace right in the Plaka

View of our hotel from the Acropolis

I would definitely stay at this hotel again because it was so nice. Every morning we woke up and had a full breakfast. The entire hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a nice pool but I never swam in it because there was no time with so much to do and see.

Every night when we got back from our tours we would go down to the Plaka to search for a good restaurant and when we were done eating we would shop.

It was interesting how the restaurants were so pressuring and the shops weren't. The food was one of the best parts of the trip. Some of the foods I ate were Greek salads, saganaki, mousaka, gyros, spinach pie, and baklava. I tried some ouzo but didn't care for it. I think I came home 10 pounds heavier! lol

On Sunday our first full day we went over to our relative's house in Athens. My mom is 50% Greek and I'm 35%. We spent a few hours there then came back to the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. I loved the Parthenon it was spectacular.

Me standing in front of the Parthenon

That night we also went to the temple of Zeus...

the parliament building

and saw the tomb of the unknown soldier. The changing of the guards was interesting.

A nice view of the Acropolis

The next day we visited the ancient Agora, Filopappou Hill, and Likavitos Hill (great views)

Ancient Agora

By that time we had done most of the close by things (tons of walking) and it was time to do the things further away. On Tuesday we went on a full day cruise to the islands Poros, Hydra, and Aegina.

The boat we took

The islands are just so neat and the water was so clear and blue.

Wednesday we took a bus to the temple of Poseidon

great views here as well

On our final full day in Greece we decided to go on the tour to Delphi. The original plan was to go to some small mountain village called Pentagio or something where my great-grandma grew up but we never made it there. Next time I guess Smile Any ways Delphi was fantastic...

With that our stay in Greece was basically complete…

Friday morning (Apr. 21) we woke up at 3:30 because our flight was at 6:50am. We got a taxi and left for the airport. That morning the airport was very busy and I found only one thing I didn’t like about the airport. The security lines were very unorganized and chaotic. People were very pushy and it seemed like it took forever to get through. Once through we headed to the gate.

AF 2333
ATH-CDG
A320
seat 7A
Load factor: 95%-100%

Boarding took place around 6:30am and the flight was scheduled for 6:50am.

Just before pushback this Cyprus A320 pulled in

At 7:00 am we taxied to the runway

We departed to the northeast then made a turn to the west right over Athens

I couldn't find the Parthenon but I did see some Olympics stuff

On our way to Paris we had another good meal, but I liked the fish more on the way to Athens. After I ate I slept for the majority of the flight until we started descending into CDG.

Sorry for the quality, but this is the best shot I could get of this Air France British Aerospace landing parallel to us.

Had to hold on the taxiway before we crossed the runway for these two aircraft to depart.

We were supposed to come into terminal 2D but that was changed to 2F where we parked at a remote stand again.

This AF 737 was parked right next to us

It's fun getting off the plane this way especially because they’re not common in the US. This time we had a layover around 3.5 hours so there was no rush like last time and it was much easier to navigate the airport and we quickly got to 2C for our flight to ORD. Our gate was C89 but later on it was switched to 83 I think. In fact when I looked at the board like all of the flights had different gates. CDG seems very unorganized and they don‘t announce anything. Well with some time I took a few more photos...

Neat to see this China Eastern A340 with the colors promoting the world expo 2010 which will be in Shanhai.

Our flight at the gate
Right before we boarded we talked with some other people who also had problems with connecting in CDG. This one couple missed the flight to ORD the day before and had to spend the night.

AF 50
CDG-ORD
A340-300
Seat: 27A
Load Factor: 90-95%

Boarding began very early and I was glad to get out of CDG without any problems! lol

Nice lineup of tails at 2A
Taxing to the runway meant for more pics

There was quite a bit of action going on so we had to wait on the taxiway for several planes to depart and land. A few minutes later we were cleared for takeoff and on our way home.

As we made our way over the Atlantic it was time for lunch.

I had beef with mashed potatoes and zucchini. That came with a salad with pasta, yogurt, and chocolate cake. Very good once again

My mom had a fillet of hake with watercress cream sauce and rice with baby vegetables. I tried some of hers and it was also delicious.

After eating I decided to watch Fun with Dick and Jane which was a funny movie.

Here's a picture of the main menu on the entertainment system that I found pretty cool. Almost everybody on the flight used it sometime or another; it was very popular among the passengers. The selection of games
was very good and it kept me busy for a while.

While a was playing my games I happened to open my window shade for a moment and to my surprise there was a US Airways 767 flying right next to us! I thought that was really cool how close it was.

Next I got up for a stretch and returned to my seat for a much needed 2 hour nap. When I woke up I watched some stuff on my PSP and listened to some music until our snack was served as we were approaching Michigan.

A short while later we began our descend into ORD. We flew over grand rapids, Michigan and came south. Then we made a turn to the west to line up with runway 27L.

Sweet view of the Chicago skyline

shortly before touchdown. The landing was a little rough but nothing too bad.

Definitely back in ORD!

pulling into the gate.
Customs didn't take long to get through but the drive home certainly did. The freeways were all backed up and it took forever to get home to Wisconsin.

Overall I really like AF because the service and food was terrific. The A340 is one awesome plane and was pretty comfortable. As for Greece I absolutely loved it there and recommend it to anyone!
Enjoy  wave

Also, what movie showed? Foreign French flicks or good ones from America?
Thanks,

I would like to try AF sometime, and preferably their 340 or 773ER. How would you guys out there compare them to BA?

Gaston,

Excellent report just like part 1. Loved all the Greece photos! Ahh to be back in Greece again!  cloudnine  Funny seeing the Olympic A340 in CDG too! AF seem really great to fly with and the food looks excellent. Did you like ATH airport leaving as you did arriving? The A310 that you took a pic of departing is Yemenia right?

Quoting RamerinianAir (Reply 4):
How did the movies run? Were they on a loop?

The movies started every 15 minutes.

Quoting RamerinianAir (Reply 4):
Also, what movie showed? Foreign French flicks or good ones from America?

There was a little bit of both. Some American ones that I recall were Fun with Dick and Jane, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chronicles of Narnia, The Constant Gardener, Cheaper by the Dozen Two, Good Night, and Good Luck, and Jarhead.

Quoting GCDEG (Reply 12):
Did you like ATH airport leaving as you did arriving?

Yeah I liked ATH airport when leaving too. It is very clean and modern like you said before in part 1 but I just think the security needs some help. Forming lines might be better than hundreds of people merging to one place, fighting their way through. Besides that the airport was very comfortable and enjoyable to be in.

Quoting GCDEG (Reply 12):
The A310 that you took a pic of departing is Yemenia right?

I'm not a 100% sure but I'd have to say it is from the little bit of the tail visible.

I also stayed at the Electra Palace in 1979. It was a great hotel. We also spent a few days on Hydra but it must be nice and quiet at this time of year.

Great pictures.
