Horrible Experience On Tarom Domestic Flights

Horrible experience on TAROM domestic flights

These flights on TAROM were absolutely fine, but the whole experience turned nasty, when I had to make an "unscheduled" stop at the airport police office in Bucharest, because a flight attendant claimed that I took several pictures of her, while on duty, which was absolutely not true. The result was pretty awful for me at that time, since I had to erase completely all my pictures taken before and on those flights, many of them being catalogued as illegal. I managed to recover my pictures from the memory card and now I can reveal all the details of the trip.

Here it goes...

I planned this trip 7 weeks before, so I can fly on the Romanian national carrier, TAROM, which I have never flown with before, and also on ATR 42-500. I tried to find domestic cheap fares and I finally booked a return flight from Bucharest to Tirgu-Mures (TGM), in central Romania, in the region called Transylvania, which I suppose many of you heard of it.  Wink

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/6065/maprg8.jpg

The flight to TGM would have a small layover in Sibiu (SBZ), "European Capital of Culture" in 2007. These 2 flights (with 2 layovers, so actually 4) cost me around 55 euros, the lowest price it can get.

These domestic flights are mostly sold with traditional paper tickets, so I had to go to the TAROM agency, to buy one.

I got to the airport around 5 PM, even though my flight would leave at 9:35 PM. I did so because I wanted to do some spotting, to try getting some shots of YR-LCA, one of the two aircrafts Airbus 310 in TAROM fleet, which began to operate again, after a few years of storage. The main reason this aircraft stopped flying at that time was the big financial losses on the routes from Bucharest to New York, Chicago, Montreal, Beijing and Bangkok. Now it's back in action, flying only European routes for now, where the demand is higher, from OTP to LHR, MAD and TLV.

Here it is, arriving from London Heathrow, before touching down on runway 08R.

TAROM 725
Aircraft type: ATR 42-500
Registration: YR-ATD (First flight: 28 Sep 1998)
Scheduled: 9:35 PM - 10:30 PM
Actual: 9:45 PM - 10:40 PM
Flight duration: 45 min
Seat: 4A
Load factor: 85% (41/48)

http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/3091/harta1ej3.jpg

I checked in for my flight about 2 hours prior to departure, getting the window seat I kindly requested, even though the view outside wouldn't be that good, because of the darkness and unfavorable weather conditions. I got seat 4A, right behind the so called business class seats, which were the same size, with the same pitch, so really nothing special about them.

http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/2645/t8bm6.jpg

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/2162/bp1pp2.jpg

Boarding was done by bus, which carried all the passengers from the domestic hall to the remote stands, where the aircraft was waiting. We boarded through the back door, as usual on ATR 42-500, and greeted by the two flight attendants, one well in her 40s and one in her 50s.

Seats 4A and 4B
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/8499/v2ho6.jpg

The seat pitch was very small, even for a middle sized person; luckily the flights operated with this type of aircraft aren't that long.

The safety demonstration came swiftly, the aircraft taxied right after that, and we took-off on runway 08R. A left turn came, in order to follow our flight path, towards north-west.

A few minutes into the flights, the F/A's began the in-flight service, consisting of a small, but extremely small ham and cheese sandwich, a bit tasteless, and a soft drink. I chose orange juice. Small snack indeed but still better than nothing, considering the length of the flight.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/2017/v5cp2.jpg

About 20 minutes into the flight and a huge bump came, which seriously shook down the whole plane, but the passengers weren't that surprised about it, most of them being most likely frequent travelers on this route, operated always with ATR 42-500.

http://img400.imageshack.us/img400/6242/v6qe2.jpg

The landing lights were switched on, before landing.
We flew right over Sibiu city center, but the camera captured only these blurry lights.

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/588/v7vg0.jpg

Unfortunately nothing to see outside, as it was raining.

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/139/v8np3.jpg

Most of the passengers left the aircraft, but no one else came instead, so there were only 11 passengers left for the flight to TGM.

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/4162/v9gu1.jpg

Meanwhile I took several pictures inside the cabin.

We took-off on runway 27 and then we headed north, for the very short hop, 80 km long, to Tirgu-Mures.
I went in the back of the plane, to try to talk to the F/A's, to explain them that I'm a big fan of aviation and I really like to take pictures everywhere I go. I explained them about airliners.net and they seemed puzzled about it, they obviously didn't have a clue about it. When I told them I took some pictures and I will post a trip report about the flights, they even turned suspicious, almost believing I'm from the press or something...  crazy  In my mind, I realized what a big mistake I've done by telling them all this. I also asked the number of passengers on the first flight, and the younger (in her 40s) told me the number, mentioning also that this is actually not allowed.
The other F/A (in her 50s) was very surprised by my words in general, asking me if I'm allowed to take pictures on flights... I said something like: I don't know, you tell me...  banghead  adding that I took thousands of pictures on my flights, having no problems about it.
I told them I would be taking the return flight the next morning, the flight being operated with the same aircraft and with the same crew.
I finally returned to my seat, as we already prepared to land in TGM.

After landing on runway 07, we left the aircraft and, because outside it was raining a lot, we had to get on a small bus, to travel on a distance not more than 40-50 meters to the terminal building. I wonder if that's happening too when it's not raining, because it's quite ridiculous.

The airport was closed during the night, opening only in the morning, about 5:30 - 6:00 AM, for the morning flight going back to Bucharest. The aircraft was left standing on the apron and the crew stayed overnight.

Before checking in for my flight I took several pictures inside the small terminal. Not so many passengers around at that early morning time. TGM has scheduled flights to Sibiu and Bucharest with TAROM, to BUD with MALEV and to CIA, BUD, BCN and LTN with Wizz Air.

TAROM check in counter, which wasn't actually used for this flight

http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/3576/b5he1.jpg

The check in process wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Before reaching the check in counter, we had to get through security (x-raying the passengers luggage only), maybe preventing this way a terrorist plot against the check in agent.  Wink My backpack was even hand checked, maybe the security agent was puzzled by my umbrella, camera and MP3 player.  bomb  Big grin
I asked the agent for a window seat and I noticed that the whole process was extremely "high tech"  Wink, I mean "done by hand". Here's my hand written boarding pass:

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/4272/bp2pd0.jpg

Then I had to go through yet another security check. Having left all my belongings, including my belt, in the backpack, I went through the metal detector. No beep, obviously. Not enough though, for the security personnel. I was hand checked all over my body, and I had to put my sport shoes to go through the x-rays... I almost started laughing, since I was never put through such tight security check before, not even in the US. I was given back my shoes and when I tried to put them on, well... the security agent told me I have to give them back for one more check... It has already become a ridiculous check, but I wasn't too bothered about it, as I knew I was in Romania, where people tend to take advantage of their jobs, especially those which give them the possibility to impose their so called "full authority", to boost their personal ego... So pathetic!  hissyfit

Inside the departures hall

We had to board again the small bus, as it was raining. The aircraft was prepared for the flight.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4576/b10zn8.jpg

I was the last passenger to board the aircraft, because my seat was 12A, all the way in the back. I was greeted by the same F/A's as the night before.
We took-off on runway 25 and immediately after rotating the plane was engulfed by the low clouds.

A light load for this flight, 17 passengers, but the flight would pick up some more 18 passengers at Sibiu.

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/8936/n3od4.jpg

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/4058/n4pd9.jpg

We landed on runway 25 and then had to wait for the remaining passengers to board. Meanwhile I tried to take pictures of the new terminal being built at Sibiu Airport, but since I couldn't get outside the aircraft and, on top of that, it was raining, I wasn't that lucky. All I got is this:

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1479/k5ka7.jpg

This is only picture I took, because when I tried to take another one inside the cabin, I was told by the F/A (in her 50s) that I shouldn't take pictures of her... She was in row 4 and I was in row 12, when I tried to take the picture, so there's a bit of distance...  banghead  I tried to explain her that I only intended to capture a shot inside the cabin, with no intention what so ever to capture her... By the way, she wasn't a beauty and I have no special interest in ladies well in their 50s. She said that she's not sure if I captured her on camera or not, so she would tell the police as soon as we land in Bucharest... Can you believe that?!!!
As I was in no mood to take any more pictures, I waited time to go by... We landed on runway 08R at OTP.

The F/A informed one of the ground personnel, from TAROM... I had to go with him at the airport police office, together with the F/A, which seemed so offended... Before getting to the police, she explained to the person which showed us our way, that she became suspicious when I asked her the number of passengers... I only asked in a normal manner: "Have you heard of the load factor?" No comment from her...  confused
At the police, the F/A explained to the officer what happened, that I took a picture of her, and then I told my side of the story, that I didn't. The officer asked for the digital camera, to take a look at the pictures. He obviously didn't find any picture with her, but he said that there are many pictures showing the airport activity, which is not allowed... At one time, he was actually talking with his colleagues, that, I quote, "these pictures can actually give you serious charges, like espionage"... I felt like I was quite a criminal, since by taking those pictures, I actually undermined the national security...  crazy  Oh, my God, I just couldn't believe what was happening. He finally told me, which I was already expecting, to erase all the pictures from the memory card... I did so! What other choice did I have?!  crying

In the end, the officers told me I was quite lucky that the F/A wouldn't press charges (on what bases? there is no picture with her!) and get a fine of about 700 euros...
After about 20-30 minutes, I was a free man, a free "terrorist - tourist".

General conclusions:
- TAROM flights were absolutely fine, but the staff is more than outdated, many of them having the old way of thinking, with habits originating from the communist era.
- If you want to come to Romania, please don't! Don't come in a country where you are not allowed to take pictures in the subway, in the malls, airports and many other places... Who knows, you might even get thrown to prison.
- If you want to fly TAROM, do so, but only if you don't plan on taking any pictures.

Personal conclusions:
- I will never ever fly again with TAROM.
- I will try to convince as many people as possible not to fly with them too.
- I will take pictures whenever I have the possibility, the "old system" will never beat me.
- I will definitely emigrate from this pathetic country... I don't want to offend any people from other countries, by saying that I would even go there than staying in Romania... But I guess I'm not offending the penguins from Antarctica, if I say that I would gladly live there, than having to spend my live in a country where I was so unlucky born.

Hopefully you enjoyed my TR, with its positive and negative sides.
Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Hi Nick

and such country is part of the EU?! That's just one reason why it's so stupid to get these former Eastern European countries into the EU pact. And the rich part of the EU is paying for these countries.

The bahaviour of some people is indeed crazy and they just play with their 'rights' at work, to bother e.g. passengers.

About RO: Your mealservice seemed OK for the lenght of flight. Seats look rather shabby. Bit old-fashioned cabin styling. Probably the Romanian 'style' as you mentioned.

I surely had no intentions to ever try RO, but after I read this, they also loose my potential loyalty to them.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the report, sorry you had to go through all that stuff, but it happens, and it can happen in any country.
I was told not to take pictures in JFK, SEA, SAW, TLV just to name a few. There were efforts to ban photography in subways in New York, you can't take pictures of tunnels and others.
These are testing times for all of us, and believe me it will pass. No need to be ashamed of your country just because of a few folks "thinking" that they are doing their job.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for your reply.

There's a saying in our country: "Romania is a great country, too bad it's inhabited!". These words apply quite well to what it happened to me, and not only this time... I had gone through similar situations before, I assumed I can handle them easily, but I guess I'm not capable of that... And I don't want to.

Hi TK787,
Thank you for your reply too.
Yes, I know, unfortunately after 9/11 we, as mankind, lost our "innocence"... It will be very hard to get it back; maybe we will never accomplish that.

In TLV, you are allowed to take pictures, once u have cleared immigration and security. I checked with security at the airport and they informed me that I cud take snaps, from the huge downward ramp onwards.

It's really too bad the F/A felt the need to assert her authority that way. I wonder what would've happened if say, an American, was in the same situation.

Hi Nickbbu,

I can feel your anger right now. You are right, much of Romania is still sunk in communist times, and the consequences (e.g. no spotting allowed) are ridiculous. The "undermining of national security" argument is a joke. Those officials should really have a look at some a.net pics. Among others, they can have a look at some ROAF MiG aircraft which have been photographed legally.

However, the conclusions you draw from your experience are a bit over the top, IMHO.
As the old ex-commies are replaced with younger people, I'm sure lots of things will change in the future. But yes, it'll take a long time.

I know I over-reacted a bit in my conclusions, but I simply couldn't restrain myself.  Sad

I'm not really sure about that, since many of the young people are being taught by old people, still using the 'old' methods.  Wink

Hello, Nick,

beneath all your negative personal experiences on that tour, your story about domestic operations in Romania
is real interesting from my point of view.

There are more and more places where it is not allowed to take pix.
So, we will see what´s going on with our special interest, do it as long as it´s possible.
 Wink
And tell us about your experiences.

And, nevertheless, I hope to visit Romania sometimes.

At one point, I was in the brink of actually inviting you to do a visit here, since there is even a direct route now, between STR and OTP, operated by the LCC, Blue Air...But now I'm not so sure if it's a good idea, I just don't want others to go through what I've experienced (even though I am pretty sure Blue Air regulations and F/As are more reasonable).

Interesting report.

In 1992 I took a picture of what I thought was my Grandfather's factory in Bucharest. I later discovered it had been demolished and was next door. The guard saw me and with another man they ran towards me asking questions in Romanian. Fortunately my mother's cousin explained the situation and they let me go. I was scared.
In London two weeks ago I stupidly took a picture of an AA B777 and boy oh boy a security guard came over to me and made me delete both pictures. An unpleasant situation.
As to Tarom I had already bought my ticket with them as they were the cheapest. They operated BAC 111 at the time. My mother made me cancel and I lost about 1/3rd of the ticket. I flew on Austrian instead which was nealy double the price. Do you know what the cause of the A310 crash was years ago from Bucharest to Brussels?
Great story. Thanks. I read the trains in Romania are pretty bad. Do you know if ths is true?

Hi Ryan h,
My thoughts exactly... There are already millions, I was telling them the same thing.
Yes, Dracula comes from Romania, more exactly from Transylvania, where I've been to on this trip.

Very nice TR despite the older F/A thinking you wanted to snap shots of her, lol. I remember flying AZ that an older F/A politely scolded me for taking pictures on-board. Eh!

Thanks again for posting those pictures... it really gave a great view into what it's like to fly TAROM & the airports in Romania.

You report made for a very interesting and thought- provoking read. I'm sorry to hear about this experience. Whilst it seems that more and more airlines don't want people taking photos, I find it incredible that you were treated this way, as you say - like a terrorist.

Sorry if this is a daft question....but I've never been in an ATR before and am intrigued by the photograph that shoes two seats facing the "wrong" way. Are these kept for the FAs or can passengers sit on them? They don't look like FA only seats.

These are passenger seats, and quite normal on ATR's. I recon BA/Cityflyer also having such seats in the ATR 42/72's, when they still used to fly to AMS. They don't look very comfortable to me though...

The seat pitch was very small, even for a middle sized person; luckily the flights operated with this type of aircraft aren't that long.

Odd that because the Air NZ and Air Pacific ATRs I have flown on have heaps of legroom.

Always annoying to hear about people who take themselves and their jobs too seriously.

My uncle visited Romania in an airplane many, many years ago and, like you, didn't care for the place very much.

He visited Bucharest in a B-24 and dropped 500 lb bombs on it.

Very interesting report!

Is the reason that you are not allowed to take pictures at the airport because airfields are (considered) military installations?

Quoting Nickbbu (Thread starter):
I also asked the number of passengers on the first flight, and the younger (in her 40s) told me the number, mentioning also that this is actually not allowed.

HUH? You are not allowed to ask the nr of pax on the flight? Hmmm... well, I guess you'll have to count them yourself next time  Smile

Hi Nick ,
I really liked your photos and write up. Its such a shame that some stupid old bag took attitude and tried to make problems for you. This could happen anywhere in the world if you get the wrong person. I have been told that taking cabin photos on Aer Lingus from DUB to LHR is not allowed!! I have just ignored them as they were just plain stupid.

Anyway dont let it put you off just be very cautious in future and maybe just dont tell them anything . Just say you are a tourist who likes planes and nothing else.

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 1):
and such country is part of the EU?! That's just one reason why it's so stupid to get these former Eastern European countries into the EU pact. And the rich part of the EU is paying for these countries.

The new members still have a long way to go and dont forget that there is years of suspicion of people taking photos in airports/bases etc...from when it was under communism, this is something that will take years to change. Best thing is to be as discreet as possible.

Thanks for the great TR anyway , I really enjoyed it and I would love to go to OTP sometime on the RO A310!!!

Hi Infodesk,
Those seats are not that comfortable for those passengers, as they might touch their neighbor's legs.

Hi Levent,
Well OTP is a military base too, not only a civil airport, so let's say it's understandable... But these no-photo rules are enforced everywhere... Even at very small regional airports... What could I photo there, besides small aircraft and a field of corn?  Wink

A342 thanks for the information. I noticed at least 15 years ago that the trains were very slow as you mention. From Bucharest to Iasi / Moldova it seemed as if one really had to fly to avoid a long 10 hour trip I believe. And from Iasi to Czernovtsty (Ukraine nearby) I think it was faster to drive than go by train.

Thanks for posting that thrilling report, Nick. Just unbelievable what happened to you - I would file an official complaint. It's scandalous to see such kind of actions in the European Union. Haven't some of these guys realized that Ceauşescu isn't in power any longer?
Well, as a tax payer I can't stop my money ending up in that "EU member", but as an aviation enthusiast I can and will boycott Romania.

Hi PlaneHunter,
Thank you for your words.
I've been thinking of making an official complaint, but I'm not so sure how efficient would that be... What I've done is post this trip report on many Romanian forums... I was amazed of what the replies were. Many of them supported my actions, but some of them were quite "interesting".
Some forum members told me that I should be really careful, because I might get a visit from the national security services... Just unbelievable!  boggled  So even though there are almost 18 years after the fall of communism, the way of thinking didn't change at all.

I agree with you, it's not a nice thought to know that the EU funds (actually from the European tax payers) end up in such a corrupt state... Basically large amounts of money get "diverted" into the pockets of this kind of people.

Many forum members didn't agree with my conclusions, which in their opinions seemed harsh... Well, I don't know about that, maybe they are, maybe they're not... But I will personally stay away from any TAROM aircraft, as long as nothing would be done to change the "old habits".

You haven't done anything wrong. You stopped taking pictures after the request to do so from the flight attendant.

In case you get trouble, and Romania being EU member, you might also use the European laws, making it fully possible to make pictures. This kind of thing was also used when a group of UK and Dutch spotters were 'caught' in Greece when spotting at an airport which also had a military base. They were even sent to prison for a while, until the EU came into action against Greece. They've learned their lessons now I think.

Anyway, better stay out of the hands of any national security service. Those people are not easy to deal with  Wink

Nick

Interesting trip report.

I'd like to put forward a different view on what happened to you on your trip...

You were naive.

On the outbound trip you got the cabin crew suspicious of you, and then behaved in a such a way that on the return trip their suspicions were further heightened.

If you had behaved in a different way you wouldn't have created the situation you placed yourself in.

You also say that many people in Romania have a problem with the authority given to them and exceeding this.

I'd suggest that maybe you too also have a problem with authority, in that you have a problem accepting it. This is demonstrated by the way you write about the security and cabin crew...

Ultimately when we fly or enter buildings like airports we are accepting the terms and conditions of travel or the byelaws that relate to these places. It's implicit that we accept them simply by being there.

The point is, we need to be sensitive to our surroundings and situations - simple as that.
I don't like signatures...

Hi Diesel1,

Yes, I admit, I was indeed naive, to think that by going to explain to the F/A’s why I took pictures during the flight. And I sure did a big mistake by getting into small details… I should’ve just told them that I was only a tourist with a bit more passion for taking photos, and that’s it. Or even better, the best thing would’ve been not to go to tell them anything. That’s exactly what I did on my previous flights, having no such problems.

Regarding the so-called “problem with the authorities”, I can assure you I have no problem what so ever. And more than that, I am used to this kind of situations in my country and not only.
About the security check, I just described the situation as it happened. In my opinion it was a bit over the line, when the security agent told me for the second time, just 2 seconds after giving my shoes back, to present them again for a second check. But I just obeyed without any comment, at the end saying “thank you”. So there was no attitude problem on my behalf.

About the rules in the airports… Well rules are written and enforced by people. So these rules can be changed in time. What’s valid now, it could be well not valid 5 years from now, or the other way around.
As long as I, together with millions of people out there, consider that the “no photos” rule is abusive and makes no sense, I will continue to take pictures. What better proof to back this up, other than millions of pictures on a.net...

Well, here I was enjoying this trip report when suddenly I get a name check...that took me by surprise!! Thanks Markus, one of these days I'll pop down to STR so you can show me around your home town!

Nickbbu, thanks for the interesting report. I have to say that I'm always a little apprehensive about taking photos in and around planes these days, although you can always tell the trips where I've had a few beers at the airport before the flight...they're the ones with the most photos!!  Big grin

Interesting to see the cabin pics of TAROM's ATR. I actually made my first ever trips on an ATR this week as I spent the week down in the Channel Islands and flew on Aurigny's ATR72 from Gatwick. I was disappointed with the legroom on the LGW-GCI flight, but the legroom on the return flight was a good couple of inches better. It was a nice aircraft to fly on though, even if the pilot did try and plant the thing on the runway when we returned to LGW!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

Cheers.

Andy.

That's no excuse for authorities in a country which now belongs to the European Union who treat people like criminals for simply taking pictures at an airport or in an aircraft. There are other, more civilised ways to react to plane spotters.

Hi,

Great and very interesting report as I am right now in Bucharest for a temporary duty assignment. I have to tell you about my experience: I was flying back home to HEL for a few days and when I departed from OTP, I had my camera ready for some photos of teh AY E-170. While I was waiting to board the flight, I started to take pictures of the aircraft but apparently that was not ok as I was quicky approached by a romanian ground handling agent showing me to put my camera away! I have to say, I was a bit surprised as I was only taking pictures of the AY aircraft, nothing else was showing. Well, as we Finns usually don't like to be told what to do by someone else, I of course managed secretly to snap some photos of the beautiful Embraer  bigthumbsup

Other than that I have absolutely nothing to complain about Romania or romanians, very nice people in my opinion!

So you came across the same stupid rule… Good thing you didn’t follow it and you still got pictures of the AY ERJ-170, which looks great.

when you're dealing with people who have an "authority complex" the easiest way to stay out of trouble is to ask permission. I got some nice airplane pictures in China 20 years ago by asking (through the interpreter traveling with our group) permission from one of the chinese army guys in the terminal to take pictures. the worst they can do is say no.

i can also attest, restrictions on taking pictures is not exclusive to Romania, a couple of years ago i was flying TK from Ist-Ayt and i was taking pictures out the window of the aircraft, landscape pictures, and the man sitting on the aisle says to me "NO PICTURES!" I had no idea who the guy was, whether he was some government official or maybe an undercover cop, and i didn't want trouble so i put the camera away, but all i could think was "Man, mind you're own freaking business!"
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

Nice photos and very lively written trip report  Smile

I am in another post communist country Russia and oh boy do I know what you mean - yes I do 100%. Stubborness and totally unnecessary to the point of hilarity obsession with security is a big problem. Not even security they care for - but just for an excuse to make someone feel miserable by depriving of smth, banning, enforcing their authority.

Case in point - day before yesterday was on a regional two hour flight from Ust Nera (UEMT) to Yakutsk (YKS, UEEE). Served by An-24RV. And guess what - I asked politely a ground staff who was loading luggage whether I could take a shot with my camera of the plane. He said - No. I thought - WFT!! I know none of you probably have ever been or will ever be at Ust Nera airport, so here's a description: it's a single gravel (stones) runway (strip) with a single plane parking area. Grass everywhere and the entire airfield is surronded by mountains and trees. I could take a zoom SLR and take some detailed shots of anything I could unnoticed by anyone... yet not allowed to snap a 35mm film shot out of a point and shoot camera I had...

Oh yeah and the airport does not have an x-ray - the luggage is checked by a handheld metal detecting device. Pax weren't scanned!! (meaning I could be wearing a gun, knife under clothing).

Great report Nickbbu! Very interesting, in many ways

It got me wondering, this attitude of the FA. I mean I used to be one, and as much as I understand people being all excited about taking pictures on their holidays, often starting the picture taking on board the outbound flight, I didn't really appreciate if I noticed the camera was pointing at me. (I am sure I was not the target of the picture, but it would never the less include me too) Not that, lol, I would have thought this is somehow threathning the national security (which nation it would have been anyway, I am a Finn and I worked for English charter airline lol) but I didn't like the idea of a picture spreading all over with my face showing the dummiest look ever, which would have been just my luck lol. Maybe the FA on your flight was thinking the same way?

Also you asked the exact pax number. Well, I can totally see why you asked this, it is nice addition to your report, but especially in these days such question does sound a bit odd. I mean, for example, I was never asked such info, and to be honest I would have said the same, I am not allowed to give out such information, or at least asked, out of pure curiosity, why on earth you want to know it? I mean usually people get interested how many fellow pax there are when there is a over booking situation and their seat on board is in danger lol ( I have also worked as ground personnel lol)

But yeah for sure it seems she over reacted, maybe due to the back ground of the country, or maybe because the airline is giving too heavy safety briefings to the crews to assess suspicious pax and she has really taken the words literally!

There are laws in many countries where it is not allowed to take pictures at the airport, because there is also military activity on the premices. I remember even we had to do a PA sometimes to ban photo taking at the airport due to this reason. Do you know if any of the airports you visited were used by both, military and private businesses? Maybe this could explain the rule? Otherwise I can not see any reasonable reason for such rule of not allowing to take pictures at the airport.

Just my thought. Really sad you had to go through the experience, and still thank you for sharing it with us!

With regards, okAY

I remember landing in Cairo with Lufthansa on a stopover to Sanaa, Yemen and the FA announced that it was not allowed to take pictures at CAI airport and that it was against the law. As I was inside the plane,i did not bother and I took pictures.

I come from Tunisia and I was taking some pictures outside the airport at Tunis and the police stopped me and threatened to destroy the camera. They said it was a threat to the national security. Then they ask me to give them the film (it was like 8 years ago). I apologized and ask them not to take the film cause there were some personal pictures there. They decided to let me go away with it. But I had a big scare.

So defintely, you have to be careful when you take pictures.

but I didn't like the idea of a picture spreading all over with my face showing the dummiest look ever, which would have been just my luck lol. Maybe the FA on your flight was thinking the same way?

Well, i have flown BA so many times and the cabin crew were always happy to take pictures of me onboard or even be with me on the pictures...

Well we all make our personal decisions whether to follow the given rules and obey the given instructions.

You kind of missed my point there about taking pictures, sure I did not mind if someone wanted to have a picture of me working or what ever, as long as the person asked this in advance. It was just when I saw random pictures being taken in the cabin I would turn away from the camera. I never actually said anything, it was and actually still is just my personal preference of not being photographed in such occasions. And at the end of the day, to this we all have the right. And sure I would offer my helping hand in case someone wanted to have a picture taken on flight.

Well, you are right. I can imagine that it can be annoying to be taken on pictures while working. But the TAROM FA went too far.

Nickbbu,

I'm sorry and I really don't want to question what you've written, but I find it very hard to believe that things like this still go on in Romania. I've seen plenty of pics from airports in Romania posted all over the web, and it never seemed like a big deal. I'm from Albania, which was probably the most closed up and paranoid country in the world (save North Korea) during communism, and even there things like this would never happen today. If a F/A told me to stop taking pictures, I would, but I would never be "arrested" for smth like that. Heck, I've even seen pics of Albanian military bases, where no civilians are allowed.
