NICE REPORT from one of the most least likely routes but not so given the recent political context. Interesting flaps set up on the SP.

The cost of the DAM-CCS & JFK-AUH sectors were minimal as I was travelling on ZED tickets, being airline staff.

The Cubana flights were around GBP300 for CCS-HAV-SDQ. Not cheap really, but worth it as a one-off experience. The AA ticket for SDQ-JFK was a good price - around GBP95 if I remember correctly.

Regarding flying the same route one day, you'll no doubt be disappointed to know that the route is now operated by Conviasa using an A340-200. It is still possible to fly the 'SP with Iran Air and Syrianair though.

Yes, the 747SP makes the flight when the A340 is on maintenance at Iberia's hangar at Spain.

Thank you for your excellent trip report! And great pics by the way! I had the privilege to fly on the B747SP a few times domestically in South Africa many years ago and your TR brings back nostalgic memories of those flights. Thanks again for posting.

What a great report! Thanks a lot for sharing this once of a lifetime experience. Reading it and looking at all the pictures and videos made me feel like being in the plane  Smile How nice that the pax load is that much restricted, it must have made the 14hours flight much more familiar and bearable.

Thanks again for sharing

I can never get enough of reading this trip report over and over again. I'd like to thank you for posting your experience on Iran Air's very special flight to Caracas, and most importantly, I'd like to thank Mr. Hugo Chavez for sponsoring such wonderful expensive ventures just to prove a point to George W. Bush that if he can declare a war and invade a country for no reason, he too has every right to seek the friendship, support, and cooperation with Iran, for no reason, other than to threaten and tick off Mr. George W. Bush! Therein lies the sole reason for this flight to be...

Wonderful report and superb photos. Sounds like a great trip to me. Iran Air is last to fly scheduled -SP flights and among the last to fly the -200B in PAX configuration - all this while other airlines are sending their much more modern 744s for parting out. These are very interesting birds; long may they live. I hear Iran Air is an excellent airline, and those mechanics do wonders in keeping these old birds alive. When these jets are finally retired for good, I hope they find homes in musuems. I love the sequence of photos in flight. I'd love to fly one of these fine aircraft.

Does this route still operate? Probably not due to war in Syria.

Does Iran Air still use the 747SP?

Fantastic trip report. It looks like Iran Air offer a quality product, despite the obvious lack of modern amenities most of us are used to!

I believe Coviasa took over the route and it went via Beirut for a while before being quickly removed. Unsure whether this now operates.

I agree completely. I wonder if this route is still flown.
