After spending some time in New York and again being affected by rain, it was time to head to LAX and pick up a rental car and cruise the Coastal Pacific Highway, aka California 1 to San Francisco, spend two nights there before driving back to LAX. Even thou the rain was annoying, I managed to see what I wanted to see, like Ground Zero, the statue, Empire State building etc. When I arrived the previous day, the hotel check-in lady arranged a super shuttle pick up for me at 3.30am for my 7.05am flight. Wake up was at 2.45am, and I was ready and waiting outside the hotel at 3.20am armed with a hot coffee to help keep me awake, not that I really needed it because the super shuttle ride to JFK would have really keeped me awake, as the ride to JFK was a real hair raiser ride due to the driving style of the driver. As I was waiting for the shuttle to arrive, the street cleaners and rubbish collectors were hard at work. Once the shuttle arrived, I quickly got in and off we went in a hurry. The driver was basically throwing the van around the corners, quickly swerving around turning vehicles, braking hard, picking up speed quickly etc. It felt like a roller coaster ride at times. Once at JFK, about 6 other passengers got out at the same terminal and we collected our bags and went inside hoping to see the check-in lines open, but they weren’t and there was a big line waiting. I’m not a fan of waiting especially at 4am. Their was a UA employee going up and down the line telling people what they need for check-in and asking passengers to get the things ready now. A TSA employee was also doing the same thing and handing out small plastic bags. Finally about 15 minutes after check-in opened, the line started to move and within about 5 minutes I was getting my bags weighed before being asked to go to the self check-in machine. Entered my details into the computer, with my NZ FF number and was given my seat. I decided to try and get a different seat, but when I tried to, was told that seat changes can only be done at the gate. Oh well, so I printed off my boarding card and put my bags onto the platform beside the computer for the luggage tags to go on, and off I went. Started the usual terminal exploration, but didn’t find anything interesting check-in side, so went throu security which was quick for a change, and was surprised at how small Terminal 7 was. Looked throu the airside shops, and looked at the other departure gates before going to McDonalds to get some breakfast. After breakfast, I went directly to the departure gate and waited for about 30 minutes intill the pre-boarding call was made. Finally the boarding call was made, with first class and any special passengers needing help to board, with business class then economy.

Airlines: United Airlines
Flight: 23
Aircraft: B757P.S.
Seat 26F
ETD: 7.05am

Once onboard, the business cabin looked real flash for a domestic flight. After in the economy cabin, finding my seat was easy, and my first impressions of the Y+ seats on UA weren’t good. Yes the little bit of extra leg room was handy, but the recline sucked, basically the same as normal economy. Shortly before push back, an FA came around handing out newspapers. Push back was around 5 minutes late. We waited after push back for around 5 extra minutes before we began the long taxi to the runway, where we joined the long line for take off. About 20 minutes later we were finally lining up on the runway and waiting to take off clearance. With the permission granted, the engines roared into life and off we went. The B757s performance is always a thrill, and this take off was certainly a thrill. Roughly 15 minutes after take off, the FAs got the meal carts ready and started the meal service. I had my usual coke with the biscuits as the snack. During the flight, the meal cart came around five more times. About one hour out of LAX, I couldn’t work out why people, including some FA’s were looking out the windows, so I opened my window shade and saw for the first time in person, the Grand Canyon, and wow, it looked amazing. I grabbed my camera and started taking some photos. While taking some photos, I noticed a B737 sized aircraft flying low over the canyon, heading East (I think), the pilot shortly came on the PA and announced that we are now flying over the Grand Canyon. Once the Grand Canyon was out of sight, I pulled out the head phones and tuned into channel 9. About 30 minutes later, the descent started and the FAs came around with the final rubbish collection. Touch down was around 20 minutes early and within no time we were at the gate. Once at baggage claim we waited for around 10 minutes before the first bags came out. Once I had my bags, I was off outside and heading to the rental car bus stop, and a Hertz bus was just arriving, so perfect timing. About 10 minutes later, I was waiting inline for the next free Hertz agent to collect the car. About 10 minutes after that I was loading my bags into the vehicle and heading off.

Over all, United is an excellent airline and their inflight service is excellent. Check-in at JFK was slow, with check-in opening late. In reference to their Y+ seating, I honestly think that the only good thing about it, is the little extra leg room, as the recline, I thought was the same as normal economy.

I was on UA 839 last September around this time, and I really liked it. It was a 5:30 p.m. departure or something, but was delayed 45 mins. I noticed that JFK originated flights get delayed a LOT. Yet, I always prefer JFK over LGA or EWR. Much more to see in terms of planes! Makes me very happy! They are usually better in that Premium sector, but don't expect too much in terms of regular service. It's just that - regular.

I thought the service was great for a 6 hour flight. I honestly don't think economy plus are worth the extra dollars on other UA flights thou considring the seats you get on other airlines like NZ, VS etc

UA's PS service is excellent, flew UA 839 (continuation service to Sydney and Melbourne) several weeks ago in Business and was thoroughly impressed by all aspects of service, especially the flight crew! Kudos to United!

Yes but UA839 is a direct flight JFK-LAX-SYD-MEL with a plane change from a p.s. 752 to a 744 at LAX.

Ouch, why did you get to the airport so early?!!! What time did the United check-in counters open?

Indeed you're right 777ER. Especially that Economy Plus is not worth it. Also, they don't get meals anymore. Just BOB. Also, I heard that the service is very run of the mill. But if you're talking about J class, that's a gem!!! It's got even more leg room than I imagined. Row 9 is the one you gotta catch!!! I got row 5 and it was already quite comfortable on the 5 hrs. 40 mins. flight. I loved the white peach puree Bellini!!!! It was soooo good! The meal that I had on UA 839 was very nice. It was steak i remember with rosemary sauce. I slept because i was in chronic pain after my car accident. I didn't sleep as well on UA 845 in United First from LAX-GUA. It was an ok domestic first, but not as good as p.s. P.S. really stands out!!!
