YUL-MIA-YUL & Caribbean Cruise (pics & Vids)

Sun Oct 14, 2007 10:20 pm

Here is a trip report on my recent trip to the Caribbean.
We departed the port of Miami on board Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's Majesty of The Seas on September 10th.

Our 4 day cruise had stops in Nassau, Bahamas, Cococay, Bahamas and Key West, Florida before returning to Miami on September 14th.

This is a big trip report and there are lots of pictures so the posts may take long to load if you do not have a fast internet connection. Hopefully, this will not annoy anyone. I just wanted to be throughout so that everyone can enjoy it.

Departure from YUL

Airline#: American Airlines
Flight #: AA1723
Aircraft: 737-800
Seat #: 21E & 21F
Departure time: 6h15
Arrival time in MIA: 9h45

No pictures or video from inside the terminal at YUL as it was dark outside until we boarded our plane.
It was the first time I got a chance to go into the new Transborder Jetty and found it to have a nice modern look to it.
It was a lot longer than I though (as I discovered while walking to our gate at the end of the jetty).

Our flight left about 20 minutes late due to some last minute customs issues but we pushed back out of the gate just as the sun was coming up.

Here is video of our take-off from YUL on runway 06L. The sun is just coming up as we depart.
We make a quick turn to the left towards Laval after take-off to follow early morning noise abatement procedures.

After 3 hours & 15 minutes of flight, we lined up to land on runway 12 at MIA.

Day 2 - September 11th - Nassau, Bahamas

In port at Nassau (view from our cabin window). Another cruise ship, Carnival Cruise Line's Sensation was also in port.

Pool party on the deck of our ship that evening. About 1500 guests where on the ship and they all seem to be here.

Day 3 - September 12th - Cococay, Bahamas

Our ship, The Majesty of the Seas as we take a tender to the Island of Cococay.

No land in sight for as far as the eye can see.

My favorite shot from the trip. There were some thunderstorms around that night and I decided to try my luck at capturing some lightening.
This one came at the end of a 15 second exposure just as the camera shutter was closing. Perfect timing as just enough light was captured to produce this really cool shot.

Day 4 - September 13th - Key West, Florida

One of the main street's in downtown Key West. Our ship can be seen in the background.

The setting sun as we sail away from Key West on route back to Miami.
If you look closely, you will see another cruise ship from the Carnival cruise line passing under the setting sun.

Day 5 - September 14th - Departure from Miami

Time to come home already.

To get to our gate, we needed to take a short tram ride to concourse E at MIA.
Concourse E is located right in the middle of American Airline's hub at the airport so lots of aircraft movements to see.
Concourse E also has windows all around making it a paradise for a spotter like myself.
With plenty of time before our flight began boarding, I told my wife that I would spend the time taking a few dozen pictures.
Here are some of the pictures I took while waiting to board our flight back to YUL.

AA 752 taxiing after having left the gate.

AA A300 being pushed back out of the gate. I was very happy about this one as this was the first time I have been able to photograph an A300.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o62/YULspotter/2007%20Royal%20Caribbean%20cruise/P9144167.jpg

There were lots of ERJ's & ATR's parked on the ramp. There did not appear to be any gates for these a/c so I think the buses you see brought passengers to their plane.

Wow, absolutely gorgeous pictures!!! The long exposure shot of the lightning storm was particularly stunning. You've left me positively homesick after viewing these shots!

How did you like the cruise, by the way? I've yet to go on one.

-Cheers!

Last part of the report...

Departure from MIA

Airline#: American Airlines
Flight #: AA1478
Aircraft: 737-800
Reg #: N930AN
Seat #: 07D & 07F
Departure time: 12h24
Arrival time in YUL: 15h45

Our flight pretty much left on time and I took video of our departure from runway 08R.
We were seated in front of the engine and wing this time which provided great views and nice engine sounds.
In the following video you will see our taxi into position on the runway, hear the engine spool-up, get a great overall view of MIA, hear a slight throttle down to climb power at the 1:42 mark and pass over the port & beach areas of Miami.
We also got a nice view of the cruise ship that we just got off which was a nice bonus (I zoom in on it). I'm glad we were sitting on the righthand side of the plane.

The Bahamas islands can be seen below.

My wife had asked if there were better seats available while we were checking our luggage (we were supposed to sit in row 21). The ticket agent said he could give us seats D & F in row 7 which is the first row after first class.
Also, the middle seat 7E was empty which meant we could put all of our stuff in it. We of course took the seats.
Considering the number of complaints I had heard about American carriers, I wasn't expecting much in the way of customer service but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how professional and helpful the AA staff were.

There was lots of legroom in row 7 which you can see from this photo.

As we descended and began our approach into YUL, I took this photo of Champlain Bridge and the southern part of Montreal.
