A380: The First Ever Commercial Flight

Tue Nov 06, 2007 8:19 pm

1st off, sorry to those not on broadband, however the pictures make up for a million words.

25.10.07 SQ380 A380-841 9V-SKA 78A(upper deck)
1ST Flight on this aircraft, 1ST Commercial A380 Flight.
SCH DEP 08:00 SCH ARR 17:21
ACT DEP 08:00 ACT ARR 17:25

After about 3 hours sleep we were again back at Changi, this time for the real reason for the trip.

It was just after 5am. Outside Terminal 2, SQ had set up an A380 promo stand to advise this was the way in to check-in for this special flight. Outside may people were standing next to the promo to have their picture taken.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture127.jpg
Once inside it was a zoo, the check-in queue was huge, though it looked like it was being managed, press were every where, in and outside the check-in queue interviewing passengers, filming the check-in process, filming everything! Crazy stuff, what an atmosphere!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture123-1.jpg
We were only in line for 10 minutes, if that, before we were directed to the next free agent for check-in. Within moments we had bag’s tagged and the boarding passes for 78A & B on the upper deck, yay!! – These were the one's was wanted as seating is 2-4-2 upstarts in the small economy cabin.

After check-in we had photo’s taken for some stamp thing that SQ is doing to commemorate the 1st flight, they will send all those that participated a copy.

Next stop passport control then clearing the security check at the gate.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture133.jpg
Once inside the gate area it was back to the circus, people everywhere, press everywhere interviewing people, just mad, you had to be there to understand what it was like.

Here she is parked at the gate:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/DSC03904.jpg
SQ had laid on a decent buffet to feed and water everyone though the queue’s for it were quite large……

Seat map in the gate area:-

After various speeches boarding was announced, can’t quite remember what the time was.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/DSC03928.jpg
SQ’s CEO, Mr Chew Choon Seng was on hand to greet all the passengers, even signed the back of my boarding pass! – Lovely fellow!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture237.jpg
Once at the aircraft door, ground staff were offering to take pictures of the lucky passengers

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture235-1.jpg
Our seats in the upper deck were excellent, a 2-4-2 layout upstairs in a small economy cabin, the main deck is in a 3-4-3 layout. In addition to the usual blanket and pillow, a specialy ‘goody’ bag had been left for each passenger

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture242.jpg
The upper deck window seats have huge storage bins, they are excellent!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture162.jpg
All cabins are bright and feel spacious, the colours used through out really lighten the cabin nicely.

Push back was bang on time at 08:00, if I’d not been looking out of the window and seen movement, I’d not have noticed!

Note the people looking from the main terminal window
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture018-1.jpg
After a short taxi, wheels were off the ground around about 08:15, this to wild applause through out the cabin

I have to say the plane is very very quiet, I thought the 330/340 series were quiet, this beats them hands down!

The whole flight was just a complete party, Champagne flowed throught the flight, food was excellent, the SQ girl’s were superb - especially as the isles were pretty much full of people the whole flight, the press were blocking isles to interview people all the time, madness!! - must have been a nightmare for them to try and maintain service, but they did and kept smiling throught!

Order of service after take off went something like this, no exact times as I lost track of time:-

Menu:-

OJ served
Certificates handed out:-

Meal service (circa 10:30ish) – The meals had been prepared by Singapore’s Sam Leong and Australia’s Matthew Moran, I chose Matthew’s meal:-

I won’t go into my normal detail or comments about the flight as this was a one off special, you just cannot compare or comment on the service (which was just excellent!) as the flight was just unlike anything you can imagine, people everywhere, photo’s being taken of everything, booze flowing like it was going out of fashion!

Here are some photo’s of the seating area in the economy section of the aircraft:-

With about 1 hour 20 remaining another meal service was announced, however with all the madness going on around, it actually did not roll out until we had just 40 minutes of flight remaining, just amazing that everyone got a meal and drink in such a short space of time!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/Picture226.jpg
We had approval to do a fly past over the Sydney bridge, however low cloud prevented that happening, a real shame, would have made great pictures!

Summary:-

What a great day, many thanks to SQ for putting this together, it was just such an amazing event. I’ll never forget the day, so much fun and enjoyment, a real one off and quite possibly the best flight I’ll ever have.

The pictures don’t do the day justice, but I hope they gave you a feel of the day.

Thanks for reading, any comments are appreciated.

Great report and pictures. Lovely to see fizz in Y class on SQ again. It was a great selling point some years ago and it was very sad when they stopped serving it in Y class. That looked like good leg room where you were sitting too. No wonder you are smiling after such a fun flight!

Great pics and narration Mark, I was waiting the A380 standing alone with a cameraman on the 49 floor roof of our harbour front office to flypast....shame weather prevent it from happening...we had some bad weather every time the A380 visit (except the 1st time)

I have flown on SQ 221 SIN-SYD on a scheduled A380 since the inaugurals......the food portion has been cut half, and no more champagne in Y class.  Smile

Seems SQ use premium stuff in all 3 cabins for the special occasion celebration only.

A380: The First Ever Commercial Flight

Wed Nov 07, 2007 7:56 am

I am happy I was part of the inaugural flights. Economy Class was awesome, so much delicious food. I fly a lot and I have never had such a fine flight in Y class. I have been on every imaginable airline and aircrafts from the 60's til now.

Things will be different on "normal" flights, no more great quantities of food, no more French champagne flowing in Y and the party atmosphere will be gone. Except for the new aircaft, it will be business as usual.

Thank you for posting all your pictures. They give an exact impression of what the flight was like. There was certainly quite a party atmosphere on board. Everybody was happy. Captain Ting was the big star on board!!! The aircraft flies beautifully indeed.

To be objective, I won't go saying that the A380 is the greatest aircraft ever created by mankind, it is not.
Concorde will always hold the title of Queen of the Skies. She surpassed every other existing aircraft by far.

Yet the A380 is certainly what aviation needs in this day and age where the barrel of crude oil is reaching the $100 level. With the tension in the Middle-East I am afraid it will only go higher so LONG LIVE A380 and let's wish them a successful career!

Thank you Singapore Airlines, A380 cockpit crew, the Singapore Girls and all those on board. You all made our inaugural experience a most memorable one!

[Edited 2007-11-07 00:08:32]
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

A380: The First Ever Commercial Flight

Wed Nov 07, 2007 5:08 pm

Quoting Ag92 (Reply 16):
Even after being on that flight, just looking at the trip reports makes me dream of being in the exact same situation again

- I know, wish the flight had lasted longer, it seemed to be ofer far too soon!

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 17):
Thank you Singapore Airlines, A380 cockpit crew, the Singapore Girls and all those on board. You all made our inaugural experience a most memorable one!

- Totally agree!

Quoting Vasu (Reply 19):
From some of the window views, you'd never guess you were sitting on the upper deck of a giant!

- You are quite right, for some reason it never felt like sitting in the top deck of a 747.

Quoting A342 (Reply 20):
How smooth was the touchdown in SYD?

- From what I recall, smooth as silk

Regards

Mark

pix!.

One of my client's is involved in manufacturing these one´s.
So it seems, after all that issues with the A380, they do a good job!.

- Interesting, I did hear there was a chap on the plane who had something to do with toilets, perhaps the same guy?

- It seems to me they did, I guess we have to see how things go in the early weeks of service to get the real picture.

Great report, Mark. I'm green with envy!! I'm a bit curious, though about what happened AFTER the flight. What was it like in baggage claim? What about Immigration/Customs areas? I'm trying to imagine that number of people all disembarking from one plane all at once.....in BDA it would be a nightmare!

A great report. Now the trick will be to see how the A380 works for regular flights. With 471 seats, the check in process will be not much longer than for a 744, provided there are enough staff to keep the lines moving, at all airports. I think SIN will cope when SQ, QF and eventually BA are processing passengers for departures to UK at midnight, and to Sydney at about 2000 - we hope LHR and SYD/MEL will have enough staff to cope with the passengers arriving in their home city the next morning ( plus the passengers who are arriving from DXB, KUL and BKK in A380s as well.)

It will be the experience at the airport

Very nice trip report.  Smile Just one question- In economy is there a space next to the window with a compartment like you had on both decks? It seems like a nice place to put a pillow down and take a nap.  Big grin

Mark,

I hope you are aware that people might hate you for this SPLENDID report you've just shared with us!

I'd like to congratulate you for being that lucky to fly on the A380 so fast. The photos are worht a million words, so no worries, I saw everything I needed to.

Other than that, I hope you put in a safe box your memories on this historical event you were part of! Congrats again and cheers!

Nice report, brought back all the memories of that day. I was in 81H, just a few rows back from you. The crew did an excellent job that day with all the 'chaos' onboard. Pity about the flypast, would have been really nice if not for the clouds.

Once again, excellent report!

Hi there Mark,

Excellent TR, especially your pictures are very good, showing all the nooks-and-crannies of the Whale and show all the hassle of the press on-board as well...

Very well written text, Mark, a job well done...

Yes, me too... Like friend TsenTsan, I wish I had taken more pictures. crying

The atmosphere on the flight was truly fantastic... I never even turned my "TV" on during the whole flight. The people and the action on board were totally fabulous! Such a nice mixture of people coming from all over the world!!
