Iberia EZE -MAD

Fri Nov 09, 2007 3:15 pm

Hello and Welcome to my third trip report. I apologise now for the fact that there are no photos. I forgot my camera basically!

OK here goes:-

Date of Travel:- 05/11/2007
Flight Number:- IB6842
Seat:- 10C changed from 15C at checkin
Aircraft: A346
Scheduled Pushback Time:- 14:20
Actual Pushback:- 14.20

As a general comment I would like to start with comenting on how grand EZE has become now. Nothin really has changed on the checkin level except for the addition of the new Aerolineas Argentinas section all there is the same, however when you pass through immigration and security its a whole new world. Massive duty free, all kinds of shopping establishments and even a salon to have a blow dry or a cut if you so wish. I couldnt believe it and was very pleasantly suprised.

Hassle free checkin with a friendly Iberia agent allowing me to change to what I thought would be a better seat on the emergency isle. More on that later but of course it wasnt her fault and I really cant fault their customer service at checkin.

10C is right in front of 2L (The second emergeny / entrance door on the planes left) and to be honest it was very uncomfortable. It wasnt so much the dimension of the seat as such although my tall frame seemed to me to have less back support than other economy flights that I have taken and I had to slouch to rest my head and then sit up properly to be able to get comfortable again. Also because there is little storage room you always feel that you are disturbing your seat mate when ever you look for your book. Note that I broke two headphones because my legs were bending the input jack in the arm rest!!

Very suprised here. The food was fresh and very tastey. I had the meat as a main course and it was piping hot, but not overcooked with mushrooms and mash cooked to perfection. Coupled with this was a side salad, bread, butter, danish pastry with mousse de Dulce de Leche, crackers and cream cheese. More on drinks service in SERVICE section.

Breakfast was fresh fruit, ham and cheese croissant, bread, OJ, water tea or coffee. It wasnt as good as the main meal earlier but it was a good fresh breakfast that was welcomed (again see why in the SERVICE section)

How many people who have decided to read this will smile when I say thank you Iberia for giving me the usual Spanish / Argentine in flight service. To say is was awful would be an understatement in the least. It wasnt that they were rude or anything dis respectful it was just that apart from meal times and breakfast they were never there! They never came round with water or refreshments. Never offered in flight snacks ( I believe they should have done so but do correct me if I am wrong) They provided one drinks service at lunch / dinner and then a tea / coffee run at breakfast and that was it! I went to the galley to get my drinks, felt like I was invading their privacy. When I decided to go for a walk the other galley was empty with a try of juice and water and left over bread to pick at if you were hungry. In my humble opinion for a flag ship European airline this is not good enough. Even AR leave a tray of all sorts of snacks during their flights which ok is self serve but its better than nothing.

We landed on time and after what seemed like walking about the same distance that we had just flown I got to the luggage belt. We had a 15 min wait no sure why and then the bags arrived. My case and holdall were one of the first to come off and I made my way straight to the cold Madrid morning to my hotel on the metro.

This was my first long haul Iberia flight so I dont have a personal bench mark I am afraid to draw real analysis. In recent times however I have flown EZE > MIA on AA and MIA - SCl and EZE - GYE on LAN and I would say that Iberia falls in about the middle of the two based as I say on my experience with LAN a distant first place in terms of service, food and comfort.

If I had to change one thing about IB (if I have to fly tourist again) it would be the same as I would for AA and AR and that it please have the crew actually do some work and show more kindness to paying passengers. I dont ask for the world from crew (not even when I fly business) out of respect and my own personality of not wanting to be a hinderance but I do expect a little bit of service from them. I mean by that, that when I ask for a drink it is done so without the eye roll and the huff and puff and the general vibe of "oh god somebody else wants something now", for me the drink and a smile is MORE than plenty and certainly not dare to chastise me when a curtain is left open and I dare to try and use the business class toilet because I dont know anybetter

Would I fly Iberia again? Good question! I have to on the 9th December back to BsAs  Smile so its going to be interesting to compare the "going on tour crew" to the "oh god back home to reality crew". I hope there is a difference otherwise it is going to be a looooong flight back.

I hope you have enjoyed the report as much as I enjoyed writing it. In whole Iberia arent that bad in truth but considering that LAN and Iberia are ONEWORLD yet in competition with the MAD route (even though from EZE there is a connection in SCL) I really think they could do a lot worse than take a look at LAN and learn becuase the next time work sends to spain, if I have to fly it stands at the moment I will be going via SCL if you get my drift.

Thanks to you all for comments

Thanks for your thorough trip report.

I have flown the same route twice in the past two years. Onboard some people are explicitely rude and unattentive while others are very cordial and professional which is resembled by many passenger experiences on the Latin America routes if you look on this site. So in the end it is a lottery what you can get on an Iberia flight. On European flights I found them much better.

I find the food on Iberia on long haul flights among the best. And even the coffee is great. The crew are very reserved though based on my experience.

Interesting stuff, though it appears to be the norm from other TR's i've read here.

IB domestic/european seems much better, at least from my experiences anyway.

Don't forget your camera next time.

I cannot agree more to you words; as stated on my TR with IB on this route which I fly quite often, luckily on Businessplus, the terms Marks refers to service are exactly the same feeling: they are doing you a favor and when you ask for something you seem to disturb them. It is a pity with so many connections in Central and South America I think they should do better on that very aspect.

I really enjoyed reading your TR and think you are very on the mark. In my experience, IB is one of those carriers that have enjoyed relatively easy access to Latin American markets and pretty much treat a lot of the passengers on the route with condescending disdain. AF does the same thing on its Africa routes. BA used to do the same thing on its India routes - tho, competition has definitely changed the dynamic there. I agree with the other posters and also find their service significantly better in intra-European routes.

My theory is that because IB sets such a poor benchmark (this is just my own theory), many competing Latin carriers do not feel the need to significantly product differentiate when competing directly with them. AR is one of those. I have had mixed experiences with them. For decent service to Latin America, my preferred airline is TAM. Hey, I have even been known to take a CCS-GRU-MAD and CDG to avoid IB and AF. Ok, I must admit though that I was also seduced by taking 2 days break in GRU. I know my Brasilian friends are usually perplexed, but I love Sao Paulo.

Anyways, great TR.

Hi all

flag ship European airline

Nice report, I wont argue as you have stated i'ts your personal view and thats fine by me but I would like to correct you in the point that IB is not a Flag company it's an independent company.
These are my principles but if you don't like them I have others
