British Airways Club Europe/NCL Cruise Ship+Photos

Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:56 pm

Hi all and thanks for clicking into my Trip Report.

Well my love for aviation and cruise ships are always meeting and this weekend was to be no exception. I booked flights with BA to LGW and then booked my train ticket to Dover to catch a 2 night Mini cruise to Holland. The Norwegian Jewel sails around Europe on longer routes but on the odd occasion does a mini cruise. I had a few days free and needed a break so I booked myself onto it. I was on the Norwegian Gem last year and loved it and the Jewel is a sister ship so I knew it would be amazing.

DATE: 08AUG2008
ROUTE: DUB-LGW
FLIGHT: BA 8081
A/C: BOEING 737-505
SEAT : 2A
REG: G-GFFG
CLASS : CLUB EUROPE

As I arrived into the airport we passed the new Terminal 2 being constructed.

I checked in two hours before.

I went through security which only took a matter of a few minutes. I didnt bother to use the priority channel as the normal que was so empty. I then went to the Anna Livia lounge which is where BA use.

After a while it was time to go to the B gates to board.

As I walked out to the tarmac a girl from Aviance led me to the aircraft as I was the first to board. She was very nice and wished me a good cruise. As I entered the door I was greeted by a smile and shown to my seat.

After a while we pushed back. There were two passengers missing going to MCO but they off loaded the bags as they did not make it to the gate on time.

Views of T2 construction

Irish Anetter???

After take off breakfast was served. I had to go with the Veggie option.

Then I decided to go for some Champagne

After a perfect and relaxing flight it was time to land .

After clearing arrivals I went to the South Terminal to the train station. I had to get a train to Dover Priory and change at Tunbridge.

After two hours I finally arrived and made my way to the hotel.

I spent the day in Dover shopping and exploring. Its a really nice town. Much nicer than I thought it would be . The local library gives visitors a free 1 hour internet access pass so I checked my email etc... I then went to get some traditional British Fish and Chips which I ate by the seafront. It was lovely and relaxing. My room at the hotel which over looked the sea front was also nice. I got a lovely sea view room. I went to bed early that night and woke up to this the next morning :::

My ship had arrived in the early hours. It looked lovely from my window. I went down to breakfast then went for a walk along the sea front. It was a lovely sunny morning.

War memorials

There were lots of people taking to the water with canoes

After that it was time to check out and make my way to the ship.

I am a member of Lattitudes which is basically a frequent traveller card for cruise ships. It gave me priority check in so I by passed the big ques and was on the ship in around 20 minutes. My stateroom was a mini suite on Deck 11 so I was more than happy.

All the products in the bathroom were by Elemis and really nice .

View of the old HoverSpeed Hoverport from my balcony. Shame that had gone.

Italian restaurant

NCL has around 11 restaurants onboard. This screen tells you if there are any waiting times for seating. If they do not have a table right away they give you a pager and you go to the bar for a drink . When a tables ready they page you!! Nice touch . I have to say though I have never waited for a table.

Self service buffet lunch

Pool

Gym.

Spa center

Sauna with a view !

Tsars Palace Restaurant

Tepenyaki restaurant.. They cook around the tables and juggle knives LOL...

Casino

Another ship burning some oil

At 1600 we set sail. And at 1630 we had to have a drill.

The famous White cliffs of Dover

That night I had dinner and went to see a show. Met up with a nice group and we spent the evening together. I decided not to have a late night as I wanted to be up early in Amsterdam the next day . I woke up early had breakfast , as I walked out of my cabin and along the corridor there was a guy standing in just his boxer shorts and nothing else knocking on a door. He must have some how got locked out or spent the night in someone elses cabin !! Bizzare thing to see at 0730am. He said good morning to me as I walked past and I just smiled. I think he was part of the stag weekend group from Manchester. I then got off the ship and headed into the city center.

I had a lovely day in Amsterdam and did some shopping. It turned out to be nice and sunny and warm as the day went on . I then returned to the ship at around 1500. Its only a 15 minute walk from the cruise ship to the center which I love.

People waving to us as we left Amsterdam around 1630 .

A German visitor

Plane flying into AMS

As we turned out of the port and did a turn the force of the water caused an emergency with a housebarge that broke loose from its moorings.

Click here for the photos another passenger took and kindly provided me the link :::

http://heinbloed-minis.blogspot.com/...tag-2-auf-der-norwegian-jewel.html

About half way down there is even a video showing the event. The photo of the guys at the bar in Grass skirts were a Stag party from Manchester LOL....

Apartments !!

As we were making our way along the canal out towards the North sea I ordered room service.

Greek Salad,Hambuger,NYC Cheesecake ....Yummy ....

What is this ??

A lovely village

We approached a lock to take us to the sea level.

Never seen a bench like this before ::

Is this Schiphol tower??

Exit out to the North Sea

Then it was time to shower and change and go to Dinner

Then off to the nightclub

I did not stay long , I was too tired. I went to bed and awoke the next morning and went for breakfast. At around 10am I got off the ship and caught the train to LGW.

http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s347/bancl1/BALogo.jpg

DATE: 08AUG2008
ROUTE: LGW-DUB
FLIGHT: BA 8086
A/C: BOEING 737-5H6
SEAT : 3A Moved to 1F
REG: G-GFFJ ( Thanks EIDAA for getting that for me )
CLASS : CLUB EUROPE

After that it was time to go through security. I had my photo taken and then went through a scanning machine. After that they had another one and we all had to put our shoes through another scanning machine.

Time to go to the BA lounge .

After a while I was contemplating buying an eepc mini laptop. They had them on sale for only GBP187 which is alot cheaper than other stores. Dixons TaxFree had them on offer. After a while I decided that I really did want one so treated myself.

Very light ( under 1 kilo ) and very impressive. I have had it two days now and Im loving it. No more looking for internet cafes anymore!! I had read good reviews on this and I have to say everything I read was true.

After a while it was time to head down to gate 55 for boarding .As I approached the lady took my boarding card and scanned it . Much to my surprise my photo did not come up but someone elses!! This also confused the lady who asked me alot of questions. After a delay she shrugged her shoulders and put it down to a mistake. It is a bit worrying though as that photo came up with my identity.

I was first to board as they did a pre boarding call for Club Europe. I was welcomed by a very friendly French guy called Olivier. After we had all boarded he came to me and said ''Mr __________'' row 1 is free if you would like more space. I thanked him and moved to seat 1F .

Which Airport??

Time for a meal

The flight passed quickley. The service was excellent. I was looking at my eepc during the flight and the F/A was asking me about it and said it looked impressive. Soon it was time to land .

The child screaming in the background was a real pain and the mother was not much better !!

Wrong tag . I wish it was Club World LOL....

So thats it . I had a wonderful weekend and it really was a nice way to travel. I will certainly do another mini cruise again. It was a luxury weekend break well earnt. BA were excellent and so were NCL. Thanks for reading and I appreciate all comments and questions as usual.

Wow. Great TR. Great lookin' ship as well, must catch a cruise ship one of these days. I have to say, T2 is really comin' along there. Last time I saw any pictures of it, there was only one of those "sideways arch up", and now they have so much more done.

Looking forward to the next one,

Hi OA, a great TR as usual. That ship looked impressive...

The BA inflight magazine route map would badly want to be updated - still showing SNN & no BFS.

Great report! I've always wanted to sail to Hawaii or Alaska, but most of my family members have a fear of boats.

I also have the Eee PC, which I got for free, but I noticed it has AWFUL battery life. How long does your battery last for?

Great pics of the Norwegian Jewel! I got a tour of her in Miami a few months ago when I was visiting our corporate offices. They don't even consider her to be that new anymore.

All the pics are good, and I like your videos.

Didnt know that FI send their cargo a/cs to DUB.

That is cool.

Seems you enjoyed your cruise. And your BA flights seemed to go smooth.

Excellent TR as always Phil.

Glad to see BA are still doing such a good job under such pressure on the DUB-LON route. I wouldnt worry too much about the ID thing, I get stopped every time i go to the states coz someone with the same name as me over stayed their student visa and I get put into a room with all the "questionable people".

Well done again

Hey Phil!

A very interesting report! And of course, fabulous spotting pics! well done!

I still cannot believe you were in a ship! .. The room, the restaurants, THE SPA, everything seemed like you were in a top hotel! WOW!

One question, does BA still operate MCO flights out of LGW?

Now you really got me thinking about the eepc. It's perfect for traveling!

Thanks for the read!

Great report, loads of pictures! It seems you spend quite a few weeks, even months per year afloat judging by your reports.

I've flown on those particular 737s quite a few times and have probably sat in those very seats. I usually go for 2A or 3A. The G-GFF*s always seem to appear on the LGW-JER route which I do a few times per year.

Is the laptop you got one of those Linux based jobbies that boots up in about 15 seconds? My father bought one and loves it!

I don't think the tower you saw was Schiphol, it is fairly distinctive and doesn't quite look like that. The thing with the four stacks beside the canal/river could be something to do with marine traffic judging by the control tower like front thingermejig.

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 10):

Yes.

Another nice report OA, thanks for writing!

I saw a NCL cruise ship departing from Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon when I was out with the dogs (I live very close to the North Sea channel), probably it was the Norwegian Jewel?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
What is this ??

That are the ventilation towers of the "Velsertunnel" a highway tunnel under the North Sea channel.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
A lovely village

This village is called "Velsen Noord"

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
We approached a lock to take us to the sea level.

The Noordersluis is the largest lock in the Netherlands (400 mtr long, 47,5 mtr width), and for long it was the largest in Europe as well. There are investigations going on if it's possible to build a 4th lock at the complex to give the biggest ships entrance to the Amsterdam harbour, which is not possible with the current locks.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Is this Schiphol tower??

It's the communication tower located in the Waarderpolder / Haarlem, close to Schiphol Airports runway 18R/36L.

Hey Phil

It's been a while since I read one of your TRs, but the wait was well worth it! Great TR with AWESOME pics! That cruiseship looked so cool, makes me wanna go on a cruise. I especially like the cosy balcony. Very inviting to sit down, relax and have a smoke  Wink

That breakfast you were served on the DUB-LGW leg looked pretty lame, however the return leg meal looked a lot better.

You haven't flown on LX for ages, what's wrong? Big grin

Thanks again!

Then I downloaded a song and go into 'file manager'' to open it to watch but then it comes up with ''open with'' and I chose media player but nothing happens. Just wondering if you or anyone knows the best program to run on this Linux system??

Great report! Thanks for all of the pics.

Great to see the Norwegian Jewel.. I was onboard every week or so during launch. Great ship and crew. Nearly booked onto that trip as AMS is the best mini-cruise option available with NCL this year, particularly as you can walk into town.

Yes. Norwegian Jewel is the only NCL ship to call in Amsterdam this Summer. Actually, I believe that was the only call of an NCL ship in Amsterdam for the whole year.

Great report OA260. CE doesn't look too bad either! Thanks!

I thought youd like this TR  Big grin

There are things I like NCL better than RCI and vv . NCL have a seperate toilet from the main bathroom which I think is much better. Also Elemis products for washing is a big plus over RCI. A glass of Champagne is also offered to all guests when you board and thats a nice touch also. The only thing I was not impressed with was one night I asked for Steak in the Tsars Palace and was told it was off the menu. I had to have Lamb two nights running. If you wanted steak you had to have made reservations at the steak house and pay . I think steak is something that should be always available in the main dining room on a cruise ship of that class.

Anyway that was my only issue. Everything else was 100%.... Looking forward to F3 , especially the Ice bar where apparantly they will give you coats to keep you warm.  Wink
