Air Jamaica KIN/MBJ-MCO 24 NOV 2008. ( Pics INC )

Sat Dec 06, 2008 7:44 am

As promised, here is my first Trip Report on Airliners.net. Was a lot of work but I enjoyed preparing it.

Date: November 24th, 2008
Airline/Flight Number (s) : Air Jamaica 033/081
Destination: Orlando
Routing: KIN-MBJ-MCO.

6:00am – Arrived at KIN. Was very impressed with the architecture of the new terminal building and the expanded check-in area. There was a short power-outage but there was no slow-down in the check-in process. An elderly lady who had a printed e-ticket looked at the purchase date on it and thought that was her travel date and of-course she had to make a U-turn.

The new terminal building at Norman Manley International Airport. Quite impressive.

Control tower at Manley. My former "office". Memories.

A look on the departures monitor displayed the following :

JM 061 MBJ/HAV 8:00am A320 G#4
JM 079 YYZ 8:00am A321 G# 3
AA 1504 MIA 8:00am B738 G# 1
JM 015 JFK 8:30am A320 G# 7
JM 033 MBJ/FLL 9:30am A320 G# 2
KX 602 GCM 9:45am B737 G#3
AA 512 FLL 10:15am B738 G# 4

A part of the spacious elevated departure lounge. Great areal view of the tarmac. I wanted to take a photo of the " Raahtid Cafe" but it slipped me.

Escalators & glass elevators. Is this really Norman Manley International ?

JM 079 A321 ( fully painted ) KIN-YYZ & JM 061 ( hybrid ) A320 KIN/MBJ-HAV. JM 079 taxied out first but JM 061 was allowed to go ahead first. Again both using RWY 30 for departue.

JM 015 A320 to JFK climbing off RWY 12. She would have used RWY 30 for departure but
KX 602 was on finals for RWY 12. To expedite she made a sharp left turn over Kingston instead of the usual right turn after a 12 departure.

Cool Oasis joined by another aircraft. 6Y-JZA.

10:00am – Boarded my flight JM 033 to MBJ. Seat 24 F. Departure time should have been 9:30am but the inbound from FLL JM 038 was delayed by 40 minutes. We used RWY 30 for departure. Got airbourne at 10:37am and our cruising altitude was 12,000 feet. All seats in Y were occupied as many passengers were connecting to other flights in MBJ.

View from my seat. AA 512 taxiing to RWY 30 for departure to FLL.

Taxiing to RWY 30 for our 20 minutes flight to MBJ.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00352.jpg

On final for RWY 07 at MBJ.

10:57am – Arrived MBJ and we parked at Gate # 6. After disembarking we had to re-do immigration/security checks which was a bit time consuming as MBJ is quite a busy airport. Only had time for a few snap-shots as they announced the boarding of my MBJ-MCO flight at 11:20am while I was still in the security line.

About to board my connecting flight JM 081 MBJ-MCO ( ETD 12:00pm ) at Gate 13.

11:55am – Push back. Taxied to RWY 07 and we were air bourne at 12:06 pm. Seat 19 F. Cruising altitude 35,000 feet. Captain in command, M.S. LF was approximately 95% in Y and we experienced light turbulence for quite some time after departure delaying snack service.

The “gourmet cuisine”. LOL. No worries. It was a 1 hour 55 min Y flight so was not expecting much. On YYZ & JFK flights you are served much more.

1:45pm - After a smooth landing on RWY 36 L we taxied to our Gate which incidentally was 81. ( Arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule ) Those who are familiar with MCO airport will attest to its interesting design which consist of a large main terminal connected by elevated trams to 4 airside terminals.

I was going to do a Trip Report for the return trip to Jamaica as well but decided to share some shots of some of the main attractions for those who have never visited Orlando.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00398.jpg

“ Duelling Dragons” at Universal’s Islands Of Adventure. The tracks to these roller coasters intertwine and at 3 points during the ride they appear as if they would collide.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00420.jpg

“Sheikra” at Busch Gardens in Tampa. The park is a little over 1 hour drive from Orlando and is also worth visiting. “Sheikra” carries you 200 feet up, perches you face down on the edge of the first drop for a couple of seconds, then drops you 90 degrees face down. And that’s the beginning. In addition to your photo being taken while on it, you are also recorded and may purchase a dvd with yourself on it for a small fee.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00434.jpg

“ Kumba “ doing a cobra-roll at Busch Gardens Tampa.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00436.jpg

Take it easy. Won’t inter fare with your raw meat boss. Busch Gardens Tampa

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00457.jpg

People experiencing the wrath of “ Montu “ . Busch Gardens Tampa. One of my favourite. This one takes you through an Egyptian themed setting with 7 inversions. It is interesting to note also that in the past there were live Nile crocodiles in an area below the track shortly after the train pulls out of the station but they were removed as they grew too large for that area.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00552.jpg

Kraken – Sea World Orlando

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/gemini787/DSC00579.jpg

“ Hulk” Roller Coaster – Universal’s Islands Of Adventure – Orlando. Zero to 40 mph in a few seconds at the start. Launch coaster.
.
I went on all of them. A great vacation experience and also a great flight on JM and will definitely do it again next year. Probably ATL. Hope everyone enjoyed this Trip Report and I look forward to reading other reports from other A’netters.

Finally!!! Pictures of the new terminal at KIN!!! Thanks very much.

That pic you had of JM015...you said it took off from 12 and made a RIGHT turn? There was a discussion about this in the JM aviation thread. I didn't know they allowed aircraft to do that. I guess we will not be seeing an A340 executing that manoeuvre  Smile.

That looks like a stunning new terminal they have there. Air jamaica is one of my favourite airline liveries and your photos really did it justice. Well done to Air jamaica for being so bold with the paint palette.

It's always very funny to see pics of any american airline using small aircraft like 737's. We're so used to seeing only their bigger aircraft on the ramps in England.

It would have been nice to see some internal shots of the JM aircraft.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Hey I heard the MBJ airport is really nice now, didn't much pics of that..  Sad Great trip report, love to see the JM birds busy. What registration were you on up to MCO, it was rather new looking.

BTW, that section in KIN with the escalators look like just before the security checkpoint in Pittsburgh. Nice.

Welcome to the club! Big grin I made it as far as Gwazi and some would say that's not much because its wooden but I'll attest..eyes shut and clenched teeth for the entire ride, what's worse is I had an ARMY Helo pilot next to me and needless to say, I provided quite a bit of comedic relief for him for the entire ride with my erm..Utterances lol.

I believe it was a LEFT turn out on 12, if my memory serves me right the most commonly used star is the Manley 5 departure which entails a climb out and right turn to on course. The left turn is "only approved" given the aircraft can achieve a certain climb gradient. I say only in quotations as ironically the same A340 you mention, Ive witnessed a left turn out and how would I know? I live a couple a blocks away from VAZ preparatory school in East Kingston which would be under a left turn out flight path from 12, and I lie to you not, I was outside mowing the lawn one day and saw the underbelly of a JM A343 quite clearly overhead  Wink..astonished is an understatement.

Quoting Bpat777 (Reply 9):

That they do  checkmark  The last I travelled which was JAN of this year they had only installed Jetbridges at Gates 1,5,6 and 9. I do believe all Jet-bridges have been installed now. One claim to fame for KIN now over MBJ seeing as her bigger sister has always been more admired is that her Jet-bridges have glass-walls. Pretty Neat  Wink

I was really impressed with your new terminal, far superior to ours at POS (shhhhh!!!)

Shame no pics of the store with the Patties lol

Me too. Hopefully that will change.

Actually, I kinda like the views from 12 after the aircraft has completed the 180 degree turn.

Three years ago, departing for New York the 340 took off from 12, did what I can only describe as a 270 degree right turn to fly over Palisadoes and the city. It had been a long time since I flew from Kingston non-stop to anywhere on the mainland (without the MoBay stop), so I was pleasantly surprised. I really loved that view.

Quoting Speedbird2263 (Reply 12):

They plan to install a total of six, right? Would be nice to have jet bridges at all nine or ten gates

You're right. Got my right and left confused. And you've seen a A340 making the left turn out of 12? I would loved to have seen that. Or been on that flight.

Thanks. I think MBJ would offer a better spotting/photo location than KIN. I am happy that the departure lounge is elevated which give great views. Re the coasters, you are missing out man ! Words can't describe the experience.....especially on " Sheikra ".  Smile

Thanks. JM 015 made a left turn after her departure from 12. Aircraft are allowed to do so as long as they are capable of attaining a certain climb-gradient as Speedbird 2263 stated. I used to see the A310's do it quite frequently on their KIN-JFK flights when they had them.

Quoting Babybus (Reply 4):

Will try to include some on my next TR if someone else doesn't prior to me.

Quoting StarAlliance38 (Reply 5):
Great Trip Report! The new terminal looks cool! I liked the shots at MCO as well. good job!

Thanks. I like MCO's control tower and airport layout.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
I agree, a welcomed change...

KIN has certainly come a long way.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
I love their new design, it resonates the ultimate Caribbean expereince....

Agree.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
Two steps above the single level departure/arrival area..

Vast improvement.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
After doing many inter-island flights...I prefer the runway 30 departure...You have a better view of Kingston....

What I like with the 12 departure is the view from an F seat when climbing overhead MLY after the right turn. You get a nice view of the whole airport, in addition to Kingston and the narrow Palisados strip.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
Not bad, a stellar performer....

Return leg was even more full. I would estimate 97%.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
Gone are the days of stir-fried rice, salad and chesse cake on such routes...

Indeed.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
Will definately give it a try...

Last year when I first visited Busch Gardens I didn't know I would survive that 200 feet 90 degress face down drop. Awesome ride. Designed to operate in much the same manner as that type of African hawk ( Sheikra ) who is known to dive face down 90 degrees to capture ita prey.

Quoting HummingBird (Reply 6):
Your report is indeed interesting and filled with details...Your pics are captivating.....Can't wait to see the return report..Job well done...

Thanks. Didn't do a TR for the return trip unfortuately. Camera could not hold anymore photos ( over 250 ) and did not take the cables to transfer them from cam to laptop with me. Will make up for it in my next TR when I fly again.

Quoting Captaink (Reply 7):
didn't much pics of that.. Great trip report, love to see the JM birds busy. What registration were you on up to MCO, it was rather new looking.

Didn't have much time to take more of MBJ unfortunately as I only had time to redo security checks and then board the connecting one.

Quoting JM079 (Reply 8):
Awesome report. Great report AirJamaica

Damn, I am excited to see NMIA. So, the waving gallery is gone.

You guys remember those good old days at NMIA

Thanks. Looking forward to reading your TR to Brazil. NMIA will surprise you. Also on arrival, immigration is now a breeze. Waving gallery is now history at both MBJ & KIN. Really miss those days. I wish there was an official observation deck at both airports. Wishful thinking on my part.

Quoting Bpat777 (Reply 9):
Very good report and much congratulations to you. Does the new terminal at KIN have jetways? Last time I flew into KIN on an AA AB6 (10 years ago) they were using stairs.

Thanks. All glass jet bridges at KIN now.

Quoting MKP1013 (Reply 10):
Nice report - loved the pic's and your story line as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. Enjoyed preparing it.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 11):
Nice report and pictures, thanks.

The JM c/s is one of the best out there, so thanks for the shots, a real reminder.

Intersting they now have a 319, where did that come from?

Rgds

Mark

Thanks. I agree. JM's livery does stand out at any airport. The A319 is more suitable for some of JM's routes than the A320/A321's. It entered service with JM not so long ago. Two more on on the way. I think originally it was a Skybus aircraft.

Quoting Speedbird2263 (Reply 12):
I made it as far as Gwazi

Did Gwazi as well. The 2 headed wooden beast. Even though these coasters are amazing they are nothing compared to some at the roller-coaster capital of the world....Cedar Point in Ohio. Never been there before. But they have one named Top Thrill Dragster. 420 feet high. They have a total of 17 roller coasters. Hope to visit there someday.

Quoting Speedbird2263 (Reply 12):
One claim to fame for KIN now over MBJ seeing as her bigger sister has always been more admired is that her Jet-bridges have glass-walls. Pretty Neat

Agree. In that regard KIN has one thing to boast about over MBJ.

Quoting Aaden (Reply 13):
great pics.

Those airports don't receive alot of TRs.

Thanks.

Quoting Inbound (Reply 14):
Cool TR man. I knew most people would like the pics of KIN once they saw it.
I was really impressed with your new terminal, far superior to ours at POS (shhhhh!!!)

Shame no pics of the store with the Patties lol
but cool pic of the tiger

Thanks. KIN is really impressive now. Took some awesome photos of Shamu the killer whale in her music filled performance show as well as the show with the Dolphins at SeaWorld Orlando. Really amazing.

They plan to install a total of six, right? Would be nice to have jet bridges at all nine or ten gates

I remember atleast 8 jet bridges were there. Can't remember if gates 9 & 10 had them installed. Probably they were there but no aircraft parked there that morning.

Quoting AirJamaica (Thread starter):
About to board my connecting flight JM 081 MBJ-MCO ( ETD 12:00pm ) at Gate 13.

CaptainK asked about this aircrat. Its 6Y-JMK . It does look brand new but not certain when exactly did JM acquire it.

Oh, good. That makes more sense. I can't wait to go through the new terminal. Seems that KIN is now a joy to fly into.

What a fabulous job there AirJamaica! This was an outstanding report. I loved the pictures from both KIN and MBJ - they certainly have changed a lot since I was last in Jamaica (2000 to be precise). I have flown 4 round-trips through KIN (only 1 through MBJ) and looking at your pictures it has certainly improved dramatically.

Thanks for this - a great report from the sunny Caribbean.

Great report!

Nice to see something on Air Jamaica finally!

I always heard of their good service on their USA flights.

Also, your pictures of the theme parks brought back some great memories i had in Orlando. The Duelling Dragons is my favorite ride at Islands of Adventure!

Thanks a lot for sharing this!  Smile

Thanks. No problem. I wanted to share more photos but Trip Report would be too lengthy which is what I was trying to avoid. MCO is one amazing destination & JM has been serving there non-stop since 1992. In the eighties it was served via TPA. Duelling Dragons coaster is creativity at its best. They are currently constructing a new one at SeaWorld named " Manta" which should be open next summer. Should be very interesting. Passengers will be in a horizontal lay flat position and will ditch water etc. Themed off the Manta Ray. Can't wait to experience that one.

Great trip reports. Your aircraft and airport shots were clear and interesting, but your terrific photography of the various roller coasters made it all the better. If you ever make it up to Connecticut, take a trip to Lake Compounce located in the town of Bristol (not far from BDL). The Boulder Dash is a wooden roller coaster that is built into the cliff-face of a mountain. It gives an amazing and hell-bent-for-leather ride!

Thanks. Wanted to make my TR a bit different from the usual to/from. Never heard about Lake Compounce even though I visited Connecticut once but that sounds like an interesting ride. Will remember to check it out when next I am there.

Thanks for the comment on my Trip Report. I wasn't expecting this many feedbacks  Smile JM now have a code share agreement with VS out of LGW. After diversification we will see if they will return to the UK. If they do they will have to operate the route differently from how they did previously. For example a 2 class A330 probably 3X weekly to LGW would be far more economical than the daily ( up to 9 weekly ) A340 services that they had to LHR in the past which was welcomed by loyal passengers but quite expensive to operate. I may visit ATL next year and will surely try to do an even better Trip Report then.

I see,so their 340's are gone.

What a pitty,it always was a colourful sight at LHR.
We even had one in FRA a few years ago, must have been for maintenance though.

Correct. The A340's are no longer with JM. I know atleast one of them was to go to TK but I think they opted not to take it because they were not satisfied with the aircraft. Not certain who has them now. JM does stand out at any airport. Some people like the colorful livery and some don't. It catches the eyes easily though which I think was the objective when they decided on the livery/color scheme. It spells what Jamaica is all about. Vibrancy, lively and upbeat. They did maintenance in FRA so it was a regular there as well. I hope the get to restart UK services in the near future.
