BA268 LAX-LHR,the Final Journey Home

Fri Jan 02, 2009 7:18 pm

It’s taken me a while to get around to this report so some of the details are a little sketchy, however the basics are here so hope you enjoy the report.

Having arrived on AA270, we had a 5 hours to kill before our flight to London, we could have had a shorter connection, but being a plane spotter, a longer layover in LAX was a must.

After a coffee in the terminal we headed out to the car park roof next to the TBIT, spending close to 2 hours there, weather was perfect & I made 25 new planes for the log, not bad for a couple of hours.

Nic was happy reading her book.

We headed into the terminal and I decided to check if BA wanted to change our AA issued boarding passes for BA issued ones, it turned out they did, so good move to get it out the way now.

TBIT is slowly being renovated, at least the check in desks:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/BA268%20070908/BA268003.jpg
The new ones are a big improvement over the old ones:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/BA268%20070908/BA268005.jpg
LAX (as with most US airports) has yet to latch onto the Duty Free possibilities, it compares poorly to airports in Europe and Asia in choice of goods for sale, so after our quick browse and purchase of a couple of bottles of Wild Turkey, it was time to head to the lounge.

Oneworld have a joint lounge in LAX

I can say it is a vast improvement over the previous facility BA used. Plenty of computers, relaxing seating, showers, drinks and various hot & cold drinks provide you with distractions to pass the time.

From my view point, the lack of windows in the Business section was a shame, I do like to see the ramps etc.

Had a freshen up and grabbed some snacks, soup and had a few glasses of Champagne.

Boarding was called at 20:42, the departure gate tonight being 103 – the gate area looked busy when we arrived but headed to the priority line to by pass the masses.

A nice friendly welcome aboard as always, up the stairs and to our allocated seats, 62A & B.

The usuals were offered, OJ, Water or Champagne, took the latter – amenity kits and menu’s were also passed out.

though we had to sit at the end of the taxiway as the final weight & balance figures has not been approved – funny, never happened to me before today, same thing occurred with AA270 earlier in the day, amazing!

the crews were quick to start drinks and the meal service to allow as much sleep as possible.

I took the Fresh seasonal salad as the starter and the Asian beef for main – the beef was really tender, may not look much but it was really great.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/BA268%20070908/BA268043.jpg

I managed a good 5 to 6 hours sleep, had a wander downstairs, Club was full on both decks, WTP was full and Y was almost full, pretty amazing, this being the 3rd and last BA flight from LAX today.

Tatty cabin

Breakfast was served, the fruit was nice and fresh, the bacon roll was good too though no full English I had hoped for, but given it was now afternoon local time, I guess it makes sense.

Immigration was pretty quick as was the baggage – none missing either!

BA were once again excellent, really enjoyed their flights and the comfort of sitting in 62A – this and 62K are the best J seats.

As I pointed out before, the 747 fleet is looking a little tatty in areas, a shame really as the service and product are excellent. They may not have the bling bling of EK & EY for example, but the service is consistent, something those carriers cannot manage.

Hope you enjoyed, pls feel free to drop comments or questions, will answer where possible.

Kind Regards

Mark,

Thanks for an excellent trip report ... seems that BA does consistent service ... which is crucial.

Saludos,

Hi, Mark,

good to read your final US touring report.

Hey, thats the way of life, together with an aviation enthusiast, isnt it?.

Interesting lounge pictures, looks like some improvements done there.

You know, I am heading also to the US in April, not the best comments here about
the US terminal area at MCO, we will see.

Wish you lots of interesting flights in 2009,

Hi Mark,

nice to read the final leg of this trip! Good to see your wife enjoys a book for the time you're spotting! You made a good choice to marry her  Wink

Can happen. These aircraft are container loaded (bags) and sometimes it's a bit unclear how many were inside each container. Loading staff has to figure out these details with passenger sections before giving final details. It's usually about only few hundred pounds, but anyway, these matters must be correct. Of course, I don't know if this was the case on your flight, so just my guess.

Same goes for B744s with KL. When I've the time, I will finish my report on this trip and bring it online.

Hi Mark,

Great TR as always, enjoyed reading it!

The oneworld lounge at LAX looks very nice. The Club World food looks very tasty, as usual.

It's a shame to see parts of the cabin being tatty. I'm surprised BA haven't taken the time to repair a few things, and give the cabin a bit of paint, particularly the premium cabins. They're only minor complaints, but at the end of the day, J and F passengers shouldn't be seeing these things!

Thanks for posting,

- Agreed, such a shame BA are not pating attention to detail, we do notice these thigns but all said and done, it's unlikely to stop us booking with them again.

Hi Mark,
I was also in LA when you took off for London, on Sep. 7th. At that time I think I was coming from Venice beach, going back to my hotel.

All the best to you this year!

Great TR

Seems you had a good flight with BA to LHR.

Didnt know that September was so busy for BA, almost full flight!

G-BNLMs cabin seems really old. I flew on G-CIVL (for the second time  Sad) to LAX yesterday, and the cabin didnt look too bad.

Nice report Mark.

Yeah, UK time of the day is the reason for the lack of the full English breakfast but due to the arrivals lounge being closed on your arrival they should offer it I think. Bacon and eggs can be eaten any time of the day. As for the yoghurt. I think the poster who objected to it being served in the pot is being a bit picky to be honest...Most airlines serves it in its pot in C class.

Your wife must have the patience of a Saint at least the weather was good mine would nag me if I took her to watch planes.  Big grin

What happened to your usual great quality photos? These ones look a bit out of focus if you don't mind me saying so Mark....shaky hands caused by too much Champagne maybe?  Big grin

maybe I am picky but it looks cheap for Business.... would be interesting to know how much money they save in 1 year - to serve it from the can and not from a bowl or plate... anyway as I mostly fly Eco it does not matter to much for me jeje  Smile cheers

Happy new year, Mark!

Again an interesting TR and good pictures. Good that you said the meal was good. It doesn't look very promisingly.

Nice to see that TBIT is getting renovated. My last visit there was back in May 2005. The check in desks I don't have in bad memories, but the long corridors behind security and the gate area were boring and out-fashioned.

Cheers,
Stefan

Quoting StefanPAD (Reply 16):
Again an interesting TR and good pictures

- Thanks, glad you enjoyed.

Quoting StefanPAD (Reply 16):
Good that you said the meal was good. It doesn't look very promisingly

- Looks aside, it was good. Once of the problems with J food is it does not always look exciting or that great.

Quoting StefanPAD (Reply 16):
Nice to see that TBIT is getting renovated. My last visit there was back in May 2005. The check in desks I don't have in bad memories, but the long corridors behind security and the gate area were boring and out-fashioned.

- The long corridors and gates have yet to be removated, not sure what they can really do to improve those areas.

Regards

Mark

Ok to resume the breakfast service... it looks quite similar to Economy than... just the roll is placed on a plate and not in a box and the fruits are fresh and not from a can...

Hi Mark,

nice report about the final part of your really interesting journey.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
From my view point, the lack of windows in the Business section was a shame, I do like to see the ramps etc.

Definitely a shame for any aviation enthusiast - I wouldn't have liked to spend too much time there, although the food looks good and the atmosphere seems to be nice.

That's because it is - the food served on BA is strictly average. Anyone expecting superb food presentation and quality will not find it on BA. It is edible and usually tasty, but that's it.  Wink

Thanks for the report by the way, very interesting read.

Tatty cabin = again, I'm afraid it is fairly common to almost all BA aircraft.

Good to read the service was up to a good standard.

I think it goes to show that BA are generally good but far from what they could be, if they really tried.

Hey there Mark,

A great conclusion to an excellent series of trip reports to the US. Thank you for all your efforts in posting all of these reports.

I think the One World lounge in LAX does not actually look so bad. Still, it seems to be a growing trend that lounges do not have tarmac views.  Sad

I also agree with you about the tatty interior of the BA aircraft. This is not the first time I have read about this in a trip report and it seems to be a consistant problem across the fleet. I wish BA would bring their maintenance up to their service and overall product.

Once again, a great series of trip reports!

I think the breakfast offering has something to do with the length of the flight. BA re-introduced the second hot meal service (in all classes) a few years ago where a full english was offered but I think the flight time had to be more than 11 hours or so to get it, so you get the full English on the BKK, SIN, HKG services etc but not on the LAX / SFO etc.
We'd like to welcome in particular our Executive Club members and those joining us from our Oneworld alliance partners.

- I find the Airbus fleet ok, some of the 737's are ok, some tatty, 767's seem ok, not sure about the 777's, avoid them, 744's tatty, at least the ones I fly - am on another in just over a month - will see!

I wouldn't say it's "across the fleet" maybe on certain routes where the aircraft are more heavily utilised.
My last two long haul flights with BA - one in First and the other in Club World both had nice clean cabins especially the Club World one which was pristine I have to say. Although I would say there are certain aircraft which really do need an overhaul especially in First.

Great trip report!

Brings back a lot of memories from my trip a few months ago. Did you consider going to In&Out Burger during the layover?

I'm really impressed how well you've trained your wife to come to terms with plane spotting.

I'm working on this with my girlfriend. At least now she can distinguish an A340 from a 747 and an A320 from a 737. For us this is easy but for someone normal it is really big...
I'd rather die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not terrified and screaming, like his passengers

Hi Mark,

Good to read the last part of your big Hawaii trip!
A very interesting read indeed with as usual the great amount and good quality pictures!
I didn't expect BA to have their 744 cabins in this state, a bit more maintenance and the machines stay much nicer!
Nevertheless the service the offer seems of good quality, and that is more important than some damaged interior parts I would say.
Keep those reports coming!

ps. also a pity to score this particular bird again with BA having such an extensive fleet of 747's. Better luck on this next time!

Cheers,
Joost (D-ALCE)

- Yes, service is good, nothing earth shattering as you can see, but sometimes getting what you expect is better.

After a coffee in the terminal we headed out to the car park roof next to the TBIT, spending close to 2 hours there, weather was perfect & I made 25 new planes for the log, not bad for a couple of hours.

That has also been my favorite place all the time, but I was checked by the police several times during my last LAX visit in 2004. I was even sent away once - and the same officer showed up again at this place some days later. I was preparing for a nasty treatment, but he was satisfied when I told him I wouldn't take pictures. He then advised me to stay in a certain area where the people in the ATC tower couldn't see me...

Hi Mark

Nice TR! I'm glad to finally get my first peek inside the lounge at LAX!

I'd really expect a better looking interior than that, especially in J! That food sure looks nice. What a generous serving of salad! Is that a ploy to fill you up with leaves and other bits and pieces before you dig into your mains?!

No In-N-Out to indulge on? Disappointing!  Silly I really need to go back to LAX and take some pictures of the restaurant, planes and both of them combined.. And maybe me if I can fit myself in the picture!

Oh ok, I must have got an innuendo from looking at that one picture then.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 38):
Ha, could be but it's self service, east as much as you want

Right, sounds quite interesting.. And starting to make a bit more sense now!

We had planed to pop in but the wife had hurt her foot

Ah well.. Maybe next time! If I was desperate I'd get a taxi and go to the drive thru and head back to the terminal to say that I've been there!

- It's pretty close, not sure if a cab would go there as the fare would be really small.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind a tip.. My relatives live quite close to LAX so I don't see myself missing out on a trip there!

As usual a great report, have come to expect nothing less  Smile

Is 62A your preference for upper deck, or would 64A/K be better? I have a SEA - LHR trip coming up, and 64K is taken....

Cheers

- I think 62A & K are the best seats, you are essentially completely private & you have the emergency door in front of you - nobdy needs to pass near for access to their seats. 64A is ok, though you are close to the galley area and the toilet is near - same goes for 64K though in reverse, ie it is closer to the toilet.

Thanks. I have had 64K previously and found it to be a great seat, had no issues with noise from toilet or galley. Have now booked ticket and gone for 62K

This should be familiar to me, I reckon I've probably flown LAX-LHR on BA in J more times than any other route, yes, even more than IAD! Alas this was pre-renovated TBIT, pre-nice OW lounge, pre-flatbed, yet get the idea  Wink

Tip: Take the 'Parking Spot' busses that are marked to Sepulveda. They are yellow with black spots, very distinctive. They'll take you right from the terminals to the parking garage that is behind In'N'Out Burger. When they pull into say you self parked, leave the guy a couple of bucks and run for the door marked 'This Way To In N' Out Burger'  biggrin  Have done it about half a dozen times in the last 18months and never a problem. Then when you're ready to go back just walk into the garage again and wait for a bus. They seem to go round in circles but even so I try to make sure they're not doing a special trip for me...and that I don't have animal style breath! I have walked back before on a nice day but there was a short spot on one of the ramps where there was no pavement/sidewalk....

Quoting CityofAthens (Reply 22):
That's because it is - the food served on BA is strictly average. Anyone expecting superb food presentation and quality will not find it on BA.

I think BA's food has got better, or at least I've picked well. Had a delicious few dishes last week!

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 24):
I also agree with you about the tatty interior of the BA aircraft. This is not the first time I have read about this in a trip report and it seems to be a consistant problem across the fleet. I wish BA would bring their maintenance up to their service and overall product.

BA do have some aircraft that could so with some TLC no doubt about that. I was pleasantly surprised to be on a 777 the other week that seemed pristine in First. I seriously thought the aircraft was a couple of years old. I checked online after and found out it was delivered 06/99! That First cabin had remained essentially unchanged since then (ok, so it got a slight cosmetic makeover in the early '00s) and it looked great!
