New 1st Class Suites/Turkish Airlines B777-ER

Fri Jan 09, 2009 5:21 pm

Well how could I miss the opportunity to fly in Turkish Airlines ( operated by Jet Airways ) First class suites on the B777-300ER .

DATE : 07JAN2009
FLIGHT : TK 1980
ROUTE: LHR-IST
AIRLINE : TURKISH AIRLINES
A/C: BOEING 777-300ER
REG: VT - JEE ( WET LEASED FROM JET AIRWAYS )
NAME : KARADENIZ http://www.thy.com/en-INT/corporate/skylife/article.aspx?mkl=304
COCKPIT CREW : JET AIRWAYS
CABIN CREW : TURKISH AIRLINES AND JET AIRWAYS
SEAT : SUITE 1A
CLASS: FIRST CLASS SUITES

The First Class advert is here :::

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HarvvawM45I

My journey started when I left my Mums house at 6am.

I got the train to Wimbledon and changed to the Disctrict line at Earls Court. Then I got the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. I thought it would take alot longer than it did so I arrived at LHR very early.

Terminal 3 entrance

I saw that the TK check in was closed and went to the ticket desk.

I went to the guy at the desk and asked him when the First Class counter would open.
He straight away said '' are you Mr ...........'' I smiled and said yes. He said the check in normally opens 2hrs 30mins prior to departure but he would get someone to open up and check me in so I could go to the lounge. I thanked him and he asked me to wait for a few minutes. He ran over to the girls on the desk and then came back. He told me that they would be with me in a few mins. He appologised for the delay and I told him it was fine as I was quite early.

Then a lady from SAS handling came over to me at the desk and said ''Hello Mr ......., sorry to have kept you. Would you like to come with me and we will check you in ''. Certainly I said.

Anyway we got to the desk and another lady greeted me. Checked and my passport and tried to issue a boarding pass . Then the problem arose. The BP would not issue. They both appologised and I said it was ok not to worry. They then said this is the first time they had done it as I was the first , 1st class passenger on the LHR-IST route. I laughed and said thats nice to be the first. Anyway we chatted whilst they tried to sort out my BP. Then it was decided that they would have to manually do one and get it stamped by TK ticket desk to please BAA security.

After that the lady who was a supervisor wished me a great flight and thanked me for my patience. The other lady would be escorting me to the SAS lounge. I then said I wold like to go to the SQ lounge if that was ok. They said yes ofcourse and we made our way through security to the SQ 1st Class lounge. The lady was very nice and we chatted about aviation related things along the way.

We arrived at the SQ lounge and the lady said ''This is Mr ........'' he is our first 1st class passenger. The lady at the SQ desk smiled and said ' Thats nice , your manager was in yesterday and advised us of the new service''. The lady who escorted me then said it was a pleasure meeting me and to have a great flight. I thanked her and said I was impressed so far. She smiled and thanked me back.

I approached the bar and was asked what I would like to drink. I said a glass of Champagne and the lady said please take a seat I will bring it over to you.

Boarding pass. Also I was issued with my C class for IST-DUB the next day. Seems like the bug was the new F class codes .

Ok so after a few hours it was time to head to the gate. I had been offered a escort from the lounge to the aircraft but I said I was ok. I wanted to do my own thing. The SQ lounge was nice but not amazing. I was thinking they would have a hot buffet or something. If I was flying on SQ First Class suites I would expect more!

I approached the gate area and gave my boarding card and passport to the agent. She imediately called a guy over dressed in a suit from Turkish Airlines. He was the duty manager and the agent said ''This is Mr ......... our First Class passenger''. He introduced himself and welcomed me. He said he would be boarding me first in a few minutes. I took the opportunity to take some photos .

So after a few minutes the duty manager came to me and asked me to go with him. As we walked to the aircraft he said I will like this flight. I said Im sure I will. We approached the aircraft and were greeted by one TK and one 9W crew. He introduced me again by name and told them I was their first 1st class passenger. Smiles all round . I was taken to my suite 1A. I was amazed and trying to take everything all in. After I had been seated the duty officer came and said goodbye , we shook hands and I thanked him for everything.

Wardrobe

A TK Male FA called Cem came to me and welcomed me aboard and gave me a choice of drinks. I opted for the Lemon.

Then after that a 9W Female FA came and gave me my headset.

Storage space

Then Cem came and gave me this ::

WOW leather slippers ....Nice gift.

Then to my amazement an American guy with a 9W lanyard and Pilots uniform came to my seat and welcomed me onboard!! WOW it was the pilot . I was really impressed. He wished me a pleasant flight and said that if there was anything I needed just let the cabin crew know. I thanked him very much. So far I was just on cloud 9 !! I couldnt believe what was happening.

Indian writing

We pushed back from the gate and made our way to the runway, at this point Cem and the 9W crew member came and gave me a safety demo. Was quite funny.

Then I saw an SQ A380 in front of us. Crew were seated and I looked out of my suite and saw the 9W FA strapped in. I said im on the wrong side!! She looked puzzled , I said there is a SQ A380 in front of us and I want to take pics. ''Can I move?'' She smiled and looked around we were not moving and said yes ok if your quick. I hurried and said thanks. I quickly sat down and took my pics.

After take off I moved back to 1A and said thanks again. She smiled and said its only better from the outside , this is better from the inside. I smiled.

Soon Cem gave me the menu and wine list. And a hot towel .

I couldnt believe the menu , it was a really good selection and certainly First Class.

The Champagne was the best I have tasted and I must get myself a few bottles.

Then my table was laid .

I was constantly being topped up with Champagne and Water and making sure I had everything I wanted. The service was carried out jointly by 9W and TK crew. 9W are training
TK and you know that the Indian crew just have the edge with attention to detail but I guess thats why they are being trained.

This was one of the best Cappuchinos ever

After all this the crew asked me if there was anything else I would like. I just said no thanks I need to go for a walk as Im so full LOL... They said well its a long aircraft so feel free. I said I wanted to take photos of the different classes and they said feel free and smiled.

My suite

Bar between F and J class

Business class. Very nice

I tried the seat and it was very comfortable and spacious.

Then it was time to go into the unknown LOL...

I tried the seats and PTVs and have to say I was very impressed. Economy would suit me fine in this A/C anyday.

I then got talking to the crew and I have to say they were lovely and so nice to talk to.

Back through to Business class

Then I got chatting to Cem and another FA who was attending to J class. We had a good chat. He told me that when they get the 3rd 777 it will be on the JFK route.

He was due to work a HKG flight also. They loved the new A/C and said it was nice to have so much space and upgraded product. They also said it was great to work with the Jet Airways crew and had made good friends. The Jet Airways crew are only temporary until TK get familiarised with the A/C.

Bathrooms

The subject of Cherry Juice came up when chatting to the crew about similar things in Greece and Turkey and after I had sat down back in 1A , Cem brought me a glass. I laughed and said thanks alot. Was a nice touch. He was telling me places to go in Turkey in future. Pamukalle,Cappodochia are now on the list!!

He also told me about the stars at night on the ceiling in the cabin and as we started to make our decent they came on .

Reminded me of my 777 trip on EK a few years back. Nice touch.

Soon it was time for landing and the crew made the cabin ready.

I thanked the crew and asked them if I could take a pic. I wanted to get 9W and TK photo.

The crew were all so friendly and made my flight so special. Cem asked me if everything had been ok because it was his first time doing first class service. I said '' You were all 100% 10/10 and the service was fantastic'' His face lit up and I could see he was happy to hear that. I thanked all of them for the best flight in my life !! We said goodbye and they took me to the door and shook hands. The door opened and standing there was a model looking lady from TK with a sign with my name on it. I said my name and she welcomed me to Istanbul and told me to follow her. I was surprised as I did not expect that. At the top of the jetway was a buggy which took me to passport control. She hopped out took my passport and got me a Visa GBP10 or €15 which I had given her. She then drove me to the fast channel for passport control which was only meters away from the Visa desk. She told me she would meet me on the other side.

I passed through in minutes and she told me my car was waiting to take me to the hotel. She called on her mobile as we walked towards the exit. A black luxury car pulled up and the lady from TK said goodbye and asked if everything had been ok. I said it was an amazing experience and she thanked me .

I was to my hotel in around 20 minutes and checked in met my friend before taking a taxi into Sultanahmet for the evening. Istanbul is magical at night. Agia Sophia and Topkapi all lit up.

Anyway thats the end of my first part of my trip. What can I say , the photos speak for themselves. Turkish Airlines with the help of Jet Airways exceeded all expectations and all I can say is that if TK provide this type of service on HKG/SIN/JFK etc... then some airlines need to watch their heels!!

You know when you see a video of an airline for First Class you think, ''If only it was like that in real life''. To me the advert was how I felt at the end of my flight.

In 33 years of flying this was the best experience of my life . Well done Turkish Airlines you have one mega fan now . To the crew , I hope I get a flight with you all onboard sometime in the future.

---------------------------------------------

I took some videos of all classes and they can be found here ::

I hope you all enjoyed this report and comments appreciated as usual.

First of all, great trip report OA260!

The quality of service and the first class "suites" are just amazing!
It is great to hear that it was the best experience of your life....in 33 years of flying...impressive
TK really improved over the last couple of years and *A should be happy to have TK "on board".

Regards,

Lukas

P.S.: How long was the flight-time?

Hi Phil,

very enjoyable report about TK's new flagship. And another positive report about THY.

However, the First Class suite design on the 9W jet is not to my taste - the colors and the wooden panels seem to be taken from a VIP jet interior from the 1980s. In contrast, the Business Class and Economy Class sections look very nice.

Not to forget - the food looks excellent.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I took the opportunity to take some photos.

Interesting to note that the plane has already been named. However, these "Karadeniz" letters look already very worn on the right side. Probably taken from a former plane?

Philip , you are just crazy Big grin
I wondered who will pop up with the first First Review of TK, I know you are a Aviation enthusiast, but didnt expect you to do the short trip so immediately.

Thank you very much for this excellent work, and the great pictures.

wow, im at a loss of words! This must have been an amazing experience on such a relatively short flight. Was this TK's inaugural 77W flight to LHR? Quite funny that you were their first 1st class passenger Big grin The fact that you were the only first class passenger on the flight certainly made your experience even better aswell.

If you dont mind me asking, was the trip expensive? This looks so tempting and certainly would be worth the backtracking up to LHR. Is the 77W here to stay on the route or is it just deployed on IST-LHR for crew training purposes?

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Great report Philip! I was also very surprised that you would be the first person to post up a report on TK's F Class.

Crew seemed great, in fact they seemed ever greater that on SQ.

The food looked great, who would ever imagine that this would be served on an Intra EU flight, well it's F of course, but who would ever imagine that there would be an airline that offers F on intra EU.

The menu cover looked really funny, by the way.

I didn't know that they had chauffeur service all the way to the hotel, very much up to par with SQ, if they even have that on regular F (and not just suites).

For some reason your report had a somewhat very nostalgic feel. It reminded me of the good old days of flying, the way flying should be. I hope that TK will keep this good service, and that this wasn't just a one-off event.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Philip,

Yet another great trip report! The numerous pictures gave a great insight to the new TK flagship.

The aircraft looked really empty during the flight though. What would you say the loads were in the different classes? It looks like 20% in Economy and Business from the pictures. I hope the loads will starting looking up for TK soon, or else we may not be able to experience the wonderful service you described for much longer.

Thank you for all your efforts.

Hi yes the one side of the A/C must have for some reason hit a storm or something as its starting to peel. They will I am sure replace it soon. Other side looks ok.

You only realised that now LOL.... Im glad you enjoyed it. I know alot of you wanted to see a 777 report. It certainly was a trip I will always remember.

Haha I was wondering if anyone would notice that. You know I didnt even notice that at the time. Only when I was looking back at the photos I realised how ironic it was. Jet Airways must be wondeful to fly with also. Their crew were 100% .

Quoting Justbala (Reply 7):

Well for normal A320/737 service they were quite full but take a huge bird like this then it does not fill it.

Yes thats the way its meant to be and my thoughts exactly. It just shows you the luxury experience is not dead.

As above the 777 would be more suited for peak Summer loads but this is only on LHR for one month for training . Get on it while you can !!

Another great TR,

I was thinking of doing the same when they first started coming into LHR, but the Turkish Airlines website did not offer a first option.

I hope this has been sorted now.

Well done

So after my excitement is calmed down, seems the "Software" is great in F/C, liked the details you gave, with their service.

Also the food looks delicious for Airline food, and nicely presented. I guess this is not the final concept, theres still some room to improve. But on a 3-hour flights its ok. I wonder how it is on the HKG and SIN runs.

How does it taste anyway, the "Külbasti" and I assume, eggplant purée, looks mouthwatering  Wink

You had a Limo service in Istanbul, why didnt they pick you up in London?? I wonder if this service is just in Istanbul, and how other Airlines handle this?

As for the suites... like Planehunter Said, I didnt like the suites at all, looks quite boring, and the seats not very comfy. How does it look and feel in real??
Hope when they are going to order more B777, they introduce their "own" First Suites...

Last but not least, pity the Indian Crew will leave.

I'm off to IST myself in a few weeks, got a day trip on LX  Smile - since it's a say trip I hope to get all the boarding passes before arrival so not to clear customs and thus not pay the visa fee.

Look forward to the return report.

Kind Regards

Hi Philip,

That was one truly amazing TR! The service looked completely flawless and I'm very impressed. It must have felt good being the first 1st class passenger!
I couldn't believe that they personally named your menu!
And that escort from disembarking to the hotel transfer! That's what all airlines should strive for.

Can't wait to read the next one!

Great report. Great service by TK. I'm just wondering why many of your PICs are slightly blurry. Do you need a new camera? Are you not holding the camera steady (if not, a new camera with image stabilization would help). Or is the camera not focusing properly? Just curious. I don't mean to complain or be negative. Just hoping you might be interested in improving your already fine reports by improving the photos. Just a humble suggestion............not a criticism at all. Thanks.

What an incredible report. And so fast too! Thanks for posting and congratulations on being TK's first First Class passenger! Just as some other airlines are cutting back on their premium offerings, TK is enhancing theirs, including introducing F Class for the first time - it's definitely a counter-intuitive strategy which I hope works out for them.

The service you received seemed wonderful - nothing beats getting getting personalized attention. It feels mighty special, especially when it's not expected like on the ground at LHR and at IST. Wow.

Aboard, I'd love to find out how the interaction between TK and 9W works out. From the pics and your narrative, it does look pretty seamless, and the fact that this is a leased 9W aircraft not immediately apparent. What a contrast to the GF flight I was recently aboard. another 9W leased-out aircraft. On that flight, there was scarcely a hint that you were on GF. And GF had aboard a couple - can't be more than two - senior stewards aboard, who might as well not have been there.

The plane, too, looks great. Thanks again for the post.

Hi Mark and thanks.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 21):
I'm off to IST myself in a few weeks, got a day trip on LX Smile - since it's a say trip I hope to get all the boarding passes before arrival so not to clear customs and thus not pay the visa fee.

You should be able to as I always have been given BP on ATH SKG VIE BRU etc.. Fingers crossed. If not I will lend you a Tenner LOL....

Quoting CO7e7 (Reply 23):
I can't wait to fly with them in July!!!

You should have a great trip. What A/C are you on? Maybe a TR from you?

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 24):
It must have felt good being the first 1st class passenger!

Id be lying if I said it didnt. Actually It felt GREAT lol....

Quoting AmricanShamrok (Reply 25):
way better than Swiss I'd say Big grin

LOL... hmmm cant compare I will always have a soft spot for my beloved Swiss and Im sure one day the Pilot of a Swiss A320 will come and say hi to me . He is still training though .

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 26):
TK is booming and reading the latest reports here, they seem to be on the right track to become one of the best airlines in the world!

Hi Eric . No Baileys to toast you this time lol.... TK sure is leaping ahead in terms of expansion and product. Long may it last.

Quoting Emrecan (Reply 27):

Hi yes you are correct. Camera on the last legs and has not been all that great since I spilt 7UP on it lol... I have been looking at the next model of my camera Xlim Casio with anti blur or whatever the fancy name is . Its around EUR350-400 so will have to remain on the to buy list !!

Fantastic TR Phil, what a great experience!

It seems that the service from start to finish was excellent. It appears TK are very eager to impress their first class passengers. It's great to see certain airlines continuing to focus on providing a top class service all round.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Then to my amazement an American guy with a 9W lanyard and Pilots uniform came to my seat and welcomed me onboard!! WOW it was the pilot . I was really impressed. He wished me a pleasant flight and said that if there was anything I needed just let the cabin crew know.

Nice surprise, being personally welcomed by the pilot!

Thanks for posting, looking forward to your follow up reports!

Amazing...

I am utterly impressed with the way TK handled the flight. I could not help but compare to the other wet leased 9W aircraft, the A330 to Gulf Air (GF). While TK has taken extra effort to make sure everything possible had been TK-ised (with the exception of the Hindi safety stickers), GF did nothing. I wonder if this had something to do with the length of the leases?

I keep my fingers crossed that 9W will recover soon because as soon as TK is properly trained on the 77W, what will happen to these amazing members wearing the yellow coats?

GREAT TR! I've flown on a 9W 77W and it's nice to see that they haven't changed the interior too much.

But it looks like TK is flying the 77W emptier than when 9W had it!

Hey Phil,
great TR! You should rename yourself after this trip into Mr_1st_Class Big grin
Nevertheless I was pretty sure that either you or Alex (Abrelosojos) would fly and write a First Class TK trip report  Wink
Of course TK now tries to do all their best to fulfill the needs of First Class passenger. Short runs like IST-LHR are ideal for such trainings. But the most challenging part will follow in a few months when they introduce F to JFK/SIN/HKG and so on. If they can keep the same level of service onboard as well as on the ground regardless the number of F-Class pax than they are really on the way to compete the other major First Class airlines. Well, that's my personal opinion after reading this report and of course all the other reports of the last weeks.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Well done Turkish Airlines you have one mega fan now .

I thought nobody could bend apart your love to LX  Wink
That's a tough challenge, isn't it? Big grin

Selamlar!

Yes It was very TK with a hint of 9W. They have made a real effort.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 34):

I know , the 9W crew were great. You would think it was their flight ( well you know what I mean ). They were totally perfect in every aspect of their service. My Fathers family are of Indian decent so maybe Im a bit biased lol... but they did everything like clockwork. I have never seen that kind of service even in top class restaurants.

Quoting CO7e7 (Reply 35):
AMM-IST-JFK

Oh cool try for the 777. Will make a huge difference.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Reply 36):

Yes but this is only a training route for a month so expected really.

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 37):

Yes totally ideal. .Less pressure and time to learn the ropes. If the flight was full it would not give them time to do the training.

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 37):

Haha true . TK and LX are my favourite airlines. When the new Swiss F class comes out then I will try to get on that so TK maybe knocked off my list LOL... ( only joking ) . Even talking to the crew they said they had great respect for Swiss and their product.

Quoting FOMEA (Reply 38):

well, it is still flying Swiss-made  Wink I think TK and LX are two totally different airlines servicewide. they both have their own traditional touches.

What an excellent report!

The 9W wet leases are just all over a.net lately! haha.

TK seems like a great airline, and i could just feel your excitement! I would have felt the same way!

Everything from a to z seemed just flawless, and i was especially impressed with the personal greeting by the pilot himself, and also the station manager! very very nice!

Thanks a lot for sharing this! Surprise us with more! haha

Hi Akhmad,
Yes the flight had ended and I needed something to show the Jet Airways input into making my flight fantastic. This was the photo I needed to finalise my report and Im so glad I got it . It shows real friendship and team work. They certainly worked well together.

Hi sorry for the break in not being able to view the photos. I will post a link tomorrow so you can see them in my album. I never thought it would get as many views as it did. I normally load only 65 pics in each account and its sufficient. Anyway the pics will revert in a few weeks in this TR.

Its even getting views in Thailand !!!

Looking forward to the big birds flying the JFK route.
