I got up early and walked from the hotel to Terminal 2, then took the walkway to Terminal 1 where the JAL flights operate from, it took just over 5 minutes.

I had checked out this walkway the previous day, having spent the afternoon spotting @ T1, great afternoon BTW!

The terminal was not that busy at 5:00am, I think I got up too early, but better safe than sorry.

According to the numerous signs, check-in opens at 05:30, despite these signs, as soon as the staff had arrived to set up for the day, people went to try and check-in, even the regular First Class passengers were trying it – all were sent away!

05:30 arrived so I went to the JAL Global counter, this can be used by Oneworld Sapphire and above.

Got my boarding pass for 22A and headed through security.

I must say the security staff are polite and actually helpful, quite a change from others around the world..........

Here are a few pictures post security:-

I found gate 19 and sat down with a drink I had purchased in a store, needed it as it was like a sauna airside, quite awful!

Boarding started at 06:25, quite late but it seemed today’s load was going to be quite light. I took advantage of status pre-board and was about the 5th person on the plane.

I had expected to be some way down the plane – having been allocated 22A, however, 22A is less than halfway down the plane and well forward of the wing, economy starts at row 15, quite odd! In addition, JAL number the 2-3 layout in economy as A,C & H,J,K.

Despite the lack of passengers in the gate area, a steady stream of passengers boarded the plane, the seat next to me was occupied by a male passenger, despite wearing a suit and looking tidy, he smelt like he has spent the night in a bad drinking a skin full.

Boarding was complete and doors closed at 06:35, despite the row of 3 seats opposite being empty, we must have had an 80% load this morning.

I suggested with gestures that my seat mate might like to move to the opposite row and have all 3 seats to himself, he declined!

Thankfully a passing FA had a word in his ear and he moved, I gave the FA a big smile, she smiled back  Smile

Push back occurred 2 minutes behind schedule at 06:37, we quickly headed off to our departure runway, having a nice little taxi past the terminal, here are a few pictures:-

Not sure what time descent began, but we landed at 07:52, a few minutes ahead of schedule.

No pictures in the database of this plane in JAL c/s.

I arrived back in the terminal around quarter past 5, I decided I needed to grab some food before the flight, I’d rather eat early than late, it would be getting on for 9pm if I waited until getting back to Handea.

Checked in and got seat 83K for my MD-90 flight back to HND, yes it is right, row 83 on an MD-90!

The check-in agent advised me I could use the lounge since I was travelling in Business Class – not sure how this happened, booked today’s flight via OPODO, unlike ANA, JAL does not allow on-line seat purchase to most of the world!

In addition, today’s flights cost more than double the ANA flights I managed to book on-line directly.

On the way to security I saw a Mcdonald’s, so I headed in to grab a quick bite, reason being it would allow me more time to spend in the lounge.........big mistake, the lounge was tiny, was almost full, was boiling hot and did not even have a beer – I needed a beer after a hard days spotting, so I left and went into airside, expecting to find a nice bar, wrong again, ended up buying a can of Kirin Beer in Blue Sky and sitting on a hard wooden chair, not quite what I had in mind.

Whilst here, I decided to type up this report, I’m trying to stay ahead of the game, still got unwritten TR’s from last year which may not see the light of day 

Boarding started at 19:00, this time I was not able to pre-board and was advised I was not travelling in Business Class, I had merely purchased a bigger seat, I was a bit confused at this point so went and sat until other passengers had boarded.

The gate agent thanked me for waiting and again advised the bigger seats were not business class (despite the boarding pass having J on it and the check-in agent said it was business), I said it was pretty unclear especially as the boarding pass clearly has J on it.

I might add the return flight gave me extra miles and double the tier points on my BA Exec account……

Anyway, got onto the plane, it was boiling, I mean really hot!

I was in row 3, thankfully row 2 still had some overhead bin space for my bag and coat – flight looked very full, could not see another empty seat when I took mine.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/JL%202009/JL083.jpg

Despite the heat, the guy in the seat next to me had a blanket as did numerous other passengers, amazing!

Push back was 3 minutes behind schedule, here is a picture of the terminal from the plane.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/JL%202009/JL087.jpg
Wheels up after taxi at 19:29, here is the only shot I took after takeoff.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/JL%202009/JL086.jpg

I’m sorry to say I slept for the rest of the flight as I was pretty shattered,I guess service would have been similar to this mornings flight.

Wheels touched down at 20:16, some 9 minutes early, a short taxi to the gate and off the plane, was back in the hotel by 20:40.

All in all, JAL were fine, though the confusion over the bigger seat/business class thing was annoying.

Hope you enjoyed my day, nice to get on another 2 MD-90's - the return flifgt had originally been a 73H, please feel free to post any comments or questions you may have.

Best Wishes

Mark

Hi Mark,
thanks to tell us out your domestic JL experience. I'm happy to see not too much negative words  Wink

The JL ECO 772 with observation deck above:-

Missed that one 3 times last months, during my final trip it departed just when I entered the observation deck.

I can tell you, a large majority of Japanese people don't care about it and smell very badly. It's time that they start to use a good toothpaste and some deodorant.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Nice gesture actually. Probably because you're a foreigner  Wink

So stupid of them, but I'm told that it will change. But knowing JL, it might take some years to get the website changed  Sad

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Interesting. Actually, you flew in "Class J". It is not business class, but just gives a wider seat. At least, that is where this class stands for. In case you purchase an regular Y class fare, and space is available in Class J, you will be able to pay an additional 1000 Yen to get a seat in these bigger seats.
Since you flew on a quite expensive ticket (and you're having some status in oneworld), you have been lucky to get in these seats.
That story about the lounge is just weird and no good. But I understood that the lounge was far below our standards, so you didn't miss a lot.

Thanks mate,
Eric

Hola Mark!

Part three is here and, as expected, it gets more interesting the further it goes.

I really enjoyed the pictures of the terminals and your descriptions of how things work in Japanese ariports.

Another great trip report, really enjoyed it.

Really cool photos from Haneda and Kansai and has given me a great insight to the aviation of Japan. I think in one of your photos at HND, I believe I saw the JAL A300? I didn't realise that JAL still operates this type of aircraft. Looking forward to the next part!

Thanks for another great report in your series. Really enjoyed this one too.

We also got to sample a JL MD90 in Sept 2007 flying from Hiroshima to Sapporo. This is one of the longer domestic sectors in Japan and it was great to fly onboard a fast becoming rare aircraft type!

Re JAL's row numbering - I recall the same thing on our MD90. The seating rows were strangely numbered. The same applied on the JL 772 that we flew from Sapporo back to Tokyo Haneda. It was quite strange - never seen any other airline start their economy class with row 30 (or 15 in the case of the MD90).

We also spent a day in Osaka, splitting time between Itami and Kansai. Japan is one of the best places on earth for watching and photographing planes. It was amazing.

Thanks again

Hi there Mark,

Another very nice addition to your trip report series.

I don't quite understand how JL can call some seats bigger than others and code them as 'J', and then say it is actually not Business Class... This seems very confusing. Was this seat actually more expensive and did you book it as Business Class?

I like all the pictures! Thank you for all your efforts. I am really looking forward to the remaining three parts.

It's not Business Class. It's called 'Class J', just more space and and a wider seat on JL's domestic flights. You can purchase these seats to pay an additional 1000 Yen per seat per leg. This class is often sold out, as it is located convenient in front, provides just a bit extra room for a low extra fare.

Hi Mark,

Eagerly awaiting the next one to compare with!

I was quietly expecting 744Ds on this TR but hey presto, I was forced to look at the MD-90!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Any English at all? I doubt my 2 years of Jap at high school will get me anywhere when looking at kanji.. Although I did read Osaka and Kansai on the gate screen!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Can you see my plane?

Haha, took me a while to realise that there was another gate.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
On the way to security I saw a Mcdonald’s, so I headed in to grab a quick bite, reason being it would allow me more time to spend in the lounge.........big mistake, the lounge was tiny, was almost full, was boiling hot and did not even have a beer – I needed a beer after a hard days spotting, so I left and went into airside, expecting to find a nice bar, wrong again, ended up buying a can of Kirin Beer in Blue Sky and sitting on a hard wooden chair, not quite what I had in mind.

Quite disappointing. No beer vending machines anywhere?

I’m sorry to say I slept for the rest of the flight as I was pretty shattered,I guess service would have been similar to this mornings flight.

I'd be even more dead than you! You got up before 5 and got back at 8.. That's quite a long day considering you could have had a little jetlag too?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
All in all, JAL were fine, though the confusion over the bigger seat/business class thing was annoying.

Hope you enjoyed my day, nice to get on another 2 MD-90's - the return flifgt had originally been a 73H, please feel free to post any comments or questions you may have.

Definitely enjoyed the day but a little bemused at the lack of widebodies on this route!! Maybe i'm just not keeping up to date with aviation in Japan! I wonder what the "business" in the 73H would have been like..

Thanks for another great read and I know there's more to come!

Nicholas

Great stuff, well done.

Really? I would think that it could get easily cold in airports. Oh well, maybe it is just me who feels the cold easily. Big grin

Great TR, Mark! I hope I can sample MD90 once before it gets pulled out.

Mark - loving this series of TR's. The best part is there's another 3 reports to go  Smile

As someone who has never been to Asia - I'm finding these reports very intriguing and am learning quite a bit. Thanks for putting these together.

Hi All, thanks for your reads and comments  Smile

Quoting Palmjet (Reply 6):
Thanks for another great report in your series. Really enjoyed this one too.

- Cool, thanks  Smile

Quoting Palmjet (Reply 6):
We also spent a day in Osaka, splitting time between Itami and Kansai. Japan is one of the best places on earth for watching and photographing planes. It was amazing.

- Too right, love the place, spotters paradise!

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 7):
don't quite understand how JL can call some seats bigger than others and code them as 'J', and then say it is actually not Business Class... This seems very confusing. Was this seat actually more expensive and did you book it as Business Class?

- Hi GT, I booked it as economy on OPODO, however this is what the fare brought, not realised to the day.

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 7):
I like all the pictures! Thank you for all your efforts. I am really looking forward to the remaining three parts

- Thanks GT  Smile

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 9):
Eagerly awaiting the next one to compare with!

- Ha, not far away.

I was quietly expecting 744Ds on this TR but hey presto, I was forced to look at the MD-90!

- Sorry, no 744D's at all  Sad

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 9):
Any English at all? I doubt my 2 years of Jap at high school will get me anywhere when looking at kanji.. Although I did read Osaka and Kansai on the gate screen!

- Not that I saw in the train station bit I passed, the airports are all good though.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 9):
Quite disappointing. No beer vending machines anywhere?

- Not that I saw.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 9):
Definitely enjoyed the day but a little bemused at the lack of widebodies on this route!!

- Yes, KIX gets 737's/MD90's, ITM gets 772 & 773's.

Another great write up. Airside in HND tends to be a furnace during the winter months. Was there in Feb 2008 and it was so balmy inside that I was just wearing a cotton shirt. The locals were all wrapped up with scarves and woollies. I am wondering why weren't you allowed to pre-board as a OW Sapphire? Wasn't it a JAL flight?

Hiya Mark,
Great trip report as usual.

Firstly, I didn't even know JAL had MD90s! Interesting. I suppose I think of JAL as not bothering with narrowbodies!

Second, who designed their seat numbering system?? That's crazy.

I'm glad you did this report because Kansai is one of the airports I most want to see in Asia. I've still never made it to anywhere in Asia yet, but I'll get around to it eventually, so I'm glad to see that they have the spotting area and transportation to get there, and for a very nice rate I might add.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Whilst here, I decided to type up this report, I’m trying to stay ahead of the game, still got unwritten TR’s from last year which may not see the light of day

That's a good idea. I've got some that I'm wondering if they'll see the light of day myself. I also see you've replaced the computer. I remember seeing that you had an Eee PC or whatever, because I have one of those too. I have a large laptop too, but prefer not to take it with me if I can avoid it.

Thanks for all your work you do for a.net!

Hi Mark,

part number three was no disappointment, another great report! Domestic flying in Japan is such a pleasure, can't wait to go there again.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I had expected to be some way down the plane – having been allocated 22A, however, 22A is less than halfway down the plane and well forward of the wing, economy starts at row 15, quite odd! In addition, JAL number the 2-3 layout in economy as A,C & H,J,K.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Checked in and got seat 83K for my MD-90 flight back to HND, yes it is right, row 83 on an MD-90!

Very odd - but all these surprises make Japan so interesting.  Wink

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Despite the lack of passengers in the gate area, a steady stream of passengers boarded the plane, the seat next to me was occupied by a male passenger, despite wearing a suit and looking tidy, he smelt like he has spent the night in a bad drinking a skin full.

Probably his company doesn't pay for the hotels any longer?  Wink

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I suggested with gestures that my seat mate might like to move to the opposite row and have all 3 seats to himself, he declined!

Probably he didn't understand you at all.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The check-in agent advised me I could use the lounge since I was travelling in Business Class – not sure how this happened, booked today’s flight via OPODO, unlike ANA, JAL does not allow on-line seat purchase to most of the world!

Yes, it's so much more convenient to book ANA flights.

Very nice! Thanks for the report.

I enjoy flying on rare aircraft types and was pleased to add the JAL MD-90 to my 'collection.'
The exit row seats (rows 30 and 31 iirc) over the wing come with a huge amount of legroom, but they, ever so politely, won't let you use the underseat space for storage in those rows. They are serious about safety.

Hi Mark,

Nice to read another trip report from your Asia series, with some excellent pictures as usual.

When are they open if not early in the morning when people need a coffee?

JAL number the 2-3 layout in economy as A,C & H,J,K.

A bit like on Alitalia where the right window seat on the Embraer 145 or the MD-80 is marked "L".

Great reports. Two comments:

* Japan is probably my favourite country. So different, and the people are amazingly friendly. I had so many positive experiences from my 3 days in Tokyo - I cannot wait to go back. But, alas, with the strong Yen, that won't be anytime soon.

* Instead of Where's Wally, with your pictures, we can play a game of where's Clive Cussler. LOL. Hope you enjoyed the book  Wink

Another interesting catch with scoring 2 legs on the MD-90. Rare bird I would say!
Strange how JL numbers their seats, some airlines tend to have own ideas in how to number the seats.
Was there a row 4 btw? AFAIK 4 is a unlucky number in Japan. I remember Ukyo Katayama driving Formula 1 for Tyrrell and rejected NR.4.
Ohhh, nevermind. Let's continue to the next episode

cheers,
Joost (D-ALCE)

- Thanks Joost & yes, the M90 is a pretty rare bird, so nice go get a couple more flights logged.

- Don;t recall a row 4, guess it's unlikely to be there is the number is considered unlucky.
