US (F Class) + B6 : JFK-PHX-FLG-PHX-JFK

US (F class + exp) + B6 : JFK-PHX, PHX-FLG, FLG-PHX, PHX-JFK

PART ONE

This is my longest TR so far…by a long shot! My Dad, brother, and I went on an overnight trip to PHX and FLG. We went from JFK to PHX on US Airways first class on Thursday 18th Feb and came home on B6 on the 19th. We also went to FLG on the 18th.

I spent some really good time in PHX plane watching, as we showed up over 2-3 hrs early for both our flights out of PHX. It was a fun trip and I hope some of these photos are good!

We got up around 4am for our 620 flight. We left for JFK around 430 and arrived at Long Term a few minutes before 5. We jumped on the airtrain and arrived at Terminal 7 sometime after that. Airtrain was only populated by airport employees and us.

Arriving at Terminal 7:

Checked for our flight. On Time! (US Airways = On Time)

My brothers breakfast. He got the cold selection.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/Tommysphotos946.jpg

I got the omelet. It came with sautéed potatoes, fruit, and two sausages with a croissant. Also tomatoes.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/Tommysphotos949.jpg

Real cutlery!

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/Tommysphotos950.jpg

Water for me, apple juice for the brother.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/Tommysphotos947.jpg

The breakfast was really good! The omelet was really good and hot! Sometimes you get the “hot selection” and its only warm. This was nice and hot. The sausages were good as were the potatoes. I do not like tomatoes…

Evidence to prove it was a good meal:

I did not get a chance to take a picture of the coach cabin, but the flight was almost 100% full. First class had 1 empty seat and Coach had about 3 or 4 empty seats!

This was my first time in PHX since the merger, I had been to PHX on America West a while ago, before the merger. The first thing that struck me about PHX was that almost everything had been redone to say US Airways. America West is gone!

Next are some pictures from our hotel in Phoenix. It was the Ramada…I would NOT recommend it to anyone staying in PHX. The only plus side to it is you can see take offs and landing and the control tower.

After these pictures of the hotel, I will continue on with pictures of our trip to Flagstaff.

Hotel:

Room was musty and smelly. Beds not comfortable. The floor was very creaky. The free breakfast was very below the quality of most hotel chains.

Just to put a time frame to all this…we landed in PHX at about 1030. Got to the hotel by 1130.

We then went to Ruby Tuesdays for lunch around 1215. We went straight to the airport after that on a free Phoenix shuttle bus. We got to the airport at about 130 for a 410 flight. Had plenty of time in the airport!

Overall the trip to Flagstaff was fun! The Dash 8 is a great prop plane, although I’m more of a jet person myself.

END OF PART ONE

COMING UP: My return to NY on B6. PLUS...some more great pictures of airplanes at PHX. I was a few hours early for my B6 flight, so I scouted the airport again, except this time from a different terminal.

The rest will be up soon.

Very nice trip report. I see you were on the early AM "breakfast" flight to PHX. I was on the 9:50AM a few months ago. Nice lenghty flight. I know the PHX trips go very senior for the FA's, so senior that some FA's work it PHX-JFK-PHX in one day. Interesting, eh?

Quoting JKJ777 (Reply 2):

Probably, because it was near the PHX airport and it seems as though the OP was relaxing. I've never overnighted in PHX and always stay in Scottsdale, so I personally don't know any good overnight acomodations near the Sky Harbor airport.

And even though I don't work at US, thank you for choosing to fly with US Airways.

When we were looking at it on the internet, it looked really nice! Well...we hopefully learned our lesson. lol

It really is a lovely flight. Not too long and not too short.

I know some of the FA's do PHX-JFK-CLT-JFK-PHX. (or LAS I guess)

Well...yes the main reason we did stay was because we thought you could see the planes taking off, which you could...sorta. lol

Hey great report! Always great to see pictures of PHX of US..I'm a US Ramper here in PHX, and judging by the day, I'm pretty sure I was at work when you got back from Flagstaff! FLG is a pretty neat little airport, a lot like SBA. Only thing about PHX I wish US would address is the gate areas are starting to look pretty dingy.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

It looks like your plane arrived through the northern part of Scottsdale by way of Scottsdale Airpark/Loop 101 Freeway transition from north-south to east-west at Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd, and entered the Freeway Visual pattern for arrival over Interstate 10 from the west.

And that's a lousy cold breakfast for a segment like JFK-PHX. Yogurt as the entree? This could have improved on a 5+ hour flight.

One of those how small the world is, I just missed you and your arrival into FLG as I left the airport for the drive back to Prescott about3pm. Arrived early morning for some legal business, got done after lunchtime and had to wait for a friend finishing class at NAU, so went out to airport where the friend met up with me. We sat upstairs in the small lobby area/lookout over the US Airways Exprss ramp area and caught up and talked for bout an hour, and by that time, I was spent. Once the 2pm ish flight got off and we were done, hit the highway home.

Too bad we missed or if you had wanted to spend few hours there in FLG and take the later flight out, could have met up. Hope had a great trip.

PART TWO

After we got back to PHX, we went out to dinner with my uncle who lives near Phoenix. We had a nice evening before getting lost somewhere in Mesa, AZ while trying to find our hotel (motel) in the dark. We eventually found it thankfully.

The next day we got up around 7am PHX time. We had breakfast around 8 and left for the airport around 9. We got to the JetBlue check in at around 920…but it did not open till 945. So I walked around and took pictures.

JetBlue is located in Terminal 3:

Got this picture of Sun Country from outside security.

Check-in opened ontime and we were soon on our way pass an empty security.

The finger was decently busy when we first arrived, as two American flights were leaving at about the same time.

American:

The terminal soon died down and we found a lovely spot to watch the planes from at the end of the finger.

Soon it was time to board. My first impressions of B6 were the seats. They looked sorta tacky and ugly….but comfortable. They also had some decent leg room. The FAs on the flight were not the nicest…but I know you cant generalize FAs.

At this point I was looking forward to seeing more of the new Jet Blue T5. Id heard so much…

Wow -- what an amazing report. You put alot of work into it.

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):

I like B6 and fly them often because of the fares and direct flights to where I'm going, but while i like their comfy planes and service overall, I've always found their F/As to be the weakest link to the "JetBlue Experiece". More the rule than the exception, I've found them to be tacky and unprofessional. But I know their pay is horrible, so I guess they -and we- get what we pay for in that regard!

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):
Checked for our flight. On Time! (US Airways = On Time)

That JFK departure board confused me -- showed a USExpress flight to EYW and a UA flight to NRT?

Quoting Kinglobjaw (Reply 3):
And even though I don't work at US, thank you for choosing to fly with US Airways.

Weird comment. I cant stand when wannabe's post thankyou's to other people for flying their "favorite" airline.

JFKMan - again - outstanding report.

One question.. what was with the flight to EYW on the JFK FIDS?? Is that really a flight on a CRJ and when did that start??

Well lets hope they can do that part of their job a lot better than the other part, other wise we are screwed.

Although, your right. Safety is obviously a lot more important than service, but I still think that does not give the FA the excuse to be rude.

Thanks for the great TR and all the effort you made!
It's a pity about America West, I always liked them. However, from your TR it seems that US is really showing improvement. It was great to see positive notes about them.
Great to see the pic of TWA at JFK. Very nostalgic.

I also never comment on TR's, but felt I needed to get a few things across...

First,

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):
FA taking some down time: (she deserved it, worked hard)

No no no! LOL. Hope that her supervisor or some middle manager having a bad day doesn't see that pic. "No reading on the jumpseat!" Believe it or not, this is the norm. One of the more ridiculous "rules".

Quoting JFKMan (Reply 10):
The FAs had a very unorganized way of doing the snacks…handed out empty cups of ice and then about 10 minutes later returned with the can or bottle of your choice. My ice had almost completely melted. It was then atleast another 5 minutes before they came around offering a snack.

I wanted some more…so I went up to the FA to ask for some blue chips. Well, she was very rude and was not even looking at me when she handed them to me. I was disappointed at B6. (Still…I know I cant generalize FA’s) One of the FA’s was very nice and kind. I was happy to see a good number of people going back and asking for more drinks or snacks etc.

Second,
The FA did not follow procedure during the beverage service. The drinks come out, via tray service, at once (ice and can together), few rows at a time. As far as the snack service goes, this is the norm. After completing the beverage service, the FA's come through with a snack basket.

Was the FA that was rude to you the same FA that screwed up your drink service? There's always a rotten apple in the bunch, no matter what airline. It could have happened to you on DL, US, AA, WN take your pick. That doesn't make it right though.

Quoting JFKMan (Reply 10):
My first impressions of B6 were the seats. They looked sorta tacky and ugly….but comfortable.

I don't care for the dull gray colored seats myself, but they are COMFORTABLE and that is what matters.

Quoting JFKMan (Reply 10):

How many airlines does B6 try to partner with?!?!?

Aer Lingus, Lufthansa, Cape Air, and maybe more International airlines at JFK in the future. Peanuts compared to other airlines' partnerships, why???

Quoting TDubJFK (Reply 13):
I like B6 and fly them often because of the fares and direct flights to where I'm going, but while i like their comfy planes and service overall, I've always found their F/As to be the weakest link to the "JetBlue Experiece". More the rule than the exception, I've found them to be tacky and unprofessional. But I know their pay is horrible, so I guess they -and we- get what we pay for in that regard!

Tacky and unprofessional? Never heard that one before. I've found most B6 FA's to be easy going and happy. Of course, every now and then you'll get a rude FA, but that is at any airline.

B6 starts FA's at $20.00 per hour and $2.00/hour for Time Away From Base. Better starting pay than most legacies. They also are paid time and a half for going over 70 flight hours per month. Work 90 hours a month, 20 of those hours are paid at premium ($30/hr). Again, better than most pay scales, with the exception of WN.

Quoting JFKMan (Reply 17):
I almost feel bad for the B6 staff...but still, to be a FA you should realize your job is to serve! (with a smile IMHO)

Why would you feel bad for B6 staff? Pay and benefits are fair. The company treats them right for the most part. No pay cuts, no furloughs... Numerous awards for Customer Service... can you explain why you feel sorry for the staff?

Overall I thought this was a pretty good TR. Loved all your pics... Just wanted to set some things straight in regards to some comments... I don't think they were fair in some respects. Looking forward to reading your next TR.

I got the omelet. It came with sautéed potatoes, fruit, and two sausages with a croissant. Also tomatoes.

- Not a bad looking meal - tomatoes are good for you, eat them up!  Smile

Really nice TR and photos/videos JFKMan. I am happy to see your getting to fly pretty often. The flight up to FLG looked to have awesome scenery. While I never flew the route I have been to both the airport and city of Flagstaff once by car, and also twice to nearby Sedona. PHX to FLG is one of my favorite Interstate drives, highly reccomend trying it by car sometime, and check out Sedona, really amazing scenery.

While many on this site say B6 has a much better product than US it seems your experience was similar to several of my flights on them. Take away the TV screen and their no big deal. My first flight on them was about 2 years after their startup and the one word I kept thinking throughtout the whole trip was "overated". I think you can relate, and btw I don't care for their maps either.

Looking forward to your next trip and TR.

Cheers

No no no! LOL. Hope that her supervisor or some middle manager having a bad day doesn't see that pic. "No reading on the jumpseat!" Believe it or not, this is the norm. One of the more ridiculous "rules".

Ah...well if anything happens its her fault for getting caught! :P Silly rule indeed.

Quoting SKYYBLUE (Reply 27):
Second,
The FA did not follow procedure during the beverage service.

No actually it was not the same FA.

Also, as I said in the report, I know you can't generalize FAs. It could of happened anywhere.

Quoting SKYYBLUE (Reply 27):
Aer Lingus, Lufthansa, Cape Air, and maybe more International airlines at JFK in the future. Peanuts compared to other airlines' partnerships, why???

Maybe they should join an alliance...all the stuff they are doing seems silly.

Quoting SKYYBLUE (Reply 27):
B6 starts FA's at $20.00 per hour

Huh? My uncle is a FA for B6 and hets $12 an hour...and he is not a newbie either.

Quoting SKYYBLUE (Reply 27):
Pay and benefits are fair.

I REALLY disagree with that...B6 treats staff really bad. No unions does not work well...

Quoting SKYYBLUE (Reply 27):
Overall I thought this was a pretty good TR. Loved all your pics... Just wanted to set some things straight in regards to some comments... I don't think they were fair in some respects. Looking forward to reading your next TR.

Thanks for reading.

It is worth the trip to US HDQ, the Hertiage Lobby has some neat displays and lots of cool large aircraft models on display. The US company store which is open to the public is also worth a visit, just keep in mind it is usally not open on weekends and holidays so plan accordingly.

Again, you must be mistaken. You seem to be very partial to USAirways, which is fine... But please get your facts straight before you try to make B6 seem like a bad airline, and a bad place to be employed.
