Speedbird One: The Movie [BA001 LCY-JFK On Video]

Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:21 pm

Hi all

Well, here it is - 30 minutes of footage from BA001 for your viewing pleasure.

Some points
1 - the vast majority of footage is taken out of the window. I tried to limit what was taken in the cabin to protect the privacy of my fellow passengers
2 - it's a bit jerky, but it's the first time I had ever used this (borrowed) camera
3 - the video was shot on the second day of operation, when BA001 was delayed by 1h40 due to a mechanical fault (a broken engine temperature sensor I believe). However the delay was handled very well from BA's perspective and we ended up landing at JFK only an hour late. This is the sort of thing that happens with a new service, and could have been edited out of the video, but I kept it in for journalistic accuracy.
4 - the departure from LCY is well worth watching...this aircraft really does shift. Very 'sporting' as a BA captain would say!

Enjoy! Comments most welcome.

Interesting that this is an "all male flight." Not one woman; the men are all under the age of 40 and even the crew are men. LOL. Wonderful. I feel I took the flight. Thanks.

I can only echo what has already been said, it seemed like I was sat next to you.

I've always wondered how a 'Video Report' would look like, so it's nice to see it worked so well.

Okay, so you land in Shannon to clear US customs. How does that work? Like, do you have to get off then on, whats the process. Now this thing must be light as all hell cuz you took off pretty quick from LCY. How long is the time on the ground in Shannon? On a side note, as a ramp agent, this flight would be a dream to work on.

Great T.R

Very nice report - I like the documentary feel about it.

The departure from LCY was incredible - that's a shorter roll than last time I flew out in a Dash 8. Makes you wonder if they could do LCY-JFK nonstop and if they may switch to this after a teething period of operation.

Nice work!

Great set of videos! I enjoyed every one of them. I hope this flight works out for BA.... I'm thinking it has a better chance than the other all-business class flights due to the niche market it serves. It sure must be nice not having to clear immigration in JFK.

OK, so in answer to your questions -

3 flight attendants in total on Club World London City flights (BA1,2,3,4). One cabin manager and two flight attendants. Although, the A318 is certified for two in case of emergency (e.g. sick crew member).

Clearing immigration and customs in Shannon is a breeze. All passengers have to deplane with all of their possessions. You walk up the jetway, through a couple of corridors and enter the very large and spacious immigration hall. There is a small security check for customs (no need to remove shoes) where you put your bags through a scanner. If you have hold luggage, this will have been collected from the aircraft and delivered to you at this point, as you also need to take it through customs.

You then proceed to one of about 8 desks, all manned. Very friendly US staff. You go through immigration as you would do in the US and then you are 'in' the country. There is a small waiting area after the hall, with some seats and free wi-fi. There is then a short wait and boarding begins again. It's very quick, as everyone knows where they are sitting (and is normally a business traveller).

On arrival at JFK, the aircraft uses Gate 1 (the old Concorde gate outside the Concorde Room) or Gate 2, and you deplane into the general departures hall, and then there is a short walk to the other side of Terminal 7 (which is very small anyway) to the domestic luggage hall and kerbside.

Excellent video TR.

You must have been on the same flight as the Saturday Telegraph journalist who was "racing" another journalist to Times Square from Reuturs Square at Canary Wharf for the travel section. The other journalist went via LHR. The delay you experienced caused the LCY journalist to loose the race by some 40 mins.

Excellent report and quality.

But I still wonder what the point of such flight is with that intermediate stop in SNN. Even if it seems rather quick. You still double your chances of getting a delay for any reason.

Who is paying for the 8 U.S immigrations officers ? BA ?

But I wish BA the best of luck for this imaginative idea. Time will tell.

Don't know the answer to that but Shannon and for the past 15 years or so Dublin also has had US immigration in Ireland. Clearing U.S. immigration in Ireland before departure is not new.

So.... how does the whole seat look like? Were the seats the inclined flat bed type or fully flat? Were the meal set up identical to those served in Club World in the main fleet or was it more 'premium'?

OK, so the seat is a bit like the TG J seat to look at, but it's all white and goes fully flat. Configuration is 2-2.

The meal set up is very similar to normal Club World (i.e. appetiser, main, dessert or cheese, followed by afternoon tea of sandwiches and pastries on approach to JFK. Plus Club Kitchen).

The appetiser is a bit more substantial however than a normal Club World, as it is served on the LCY-SNN sector to tide people over until the main course and the rest of the service is delivered after departure from SNN.

On the return, the flight goes JFK-LCY nonstop. The service is standard Club World Sleeper Service (i.e. small snack and nightcap after departure, fruit/cereal and bacon roll for breakfast). There are a larger selection of post-departure snacks, including a delicious croque monsieur which I hope they bring to Mainline. There is also an express "City Breakfast" option which is some OJ and pastries in a bag which is given as you leave the aircraft.

A voucher is available on arrival at LCY which allows the bearer to use the facilities at the Marriot West India Quay (in Docklands) to freshen up after arrival.

Very cool T.R and thanks for answering my questions. I work ramp for Jetblue at JFK and have yet to see BA A318 come by, mainly cuz i work the mornings. Now just one more question. Was this a very wanted flight by business people in London and do you see this lasting?

Quoting Flying Belgian (Reply 13):

The aircraft is load redtricted when flying out of LCY (short runway), meaning that it would be difficult to carry enough fuel to reach JFK nonstop.
The fact that the return flight is nonstop (while factoring in tail winds) shows that the a/c does have the necessary range.

Like others said before. It is just amazing how fast this aircraft gets airborne at LCY !
Compare to that the take-off roll at SNN which is considerably longer (much more fuel and likely a derated setting on the engines).

Absolutely smashing TR to go along with an innovative new transatlantic concept. Wonderful close to Part III as you sail past BA's JFK presence in all its glory (B744, B772 and even Open Skies 757). What is your final verdict of the experience compared to regular ClubWorld service?

Many thanks for sharing (and feel free to post return trip if you had the luck to fly BA 002 / 004).

Most flights out of JFK and EWR depart after 6pm so they can arrive after LHR is opened in the morning except one flight which leaves JFK around 9am which arrives into LHR at 8:40pm. Actually most BA flights leaves the U.S. east coast after 6pm for the same reason I mentioned above.

Looks like a great service. I hope it does well, but I find it tough to believe that an all-business class service will produce the profits necessary to keep this route running. The yields may be nice since it's all premium, but I imagine the loads will be a problem. Maybe not, I hope I'm wrong as I'm a huge supporter of BA!

I just arrived from JFK, It is odd to see a small BA narrow body aircraft in terminal 7 next to 777s and 744s, it just brought back some memories when I used to see PA 737s and 727s at LHR and FRA !

Yes they do, which I think would annoy some of the passengers!

If the route doesnt work, they could always offer Boarding and Disembarking at Shannon, or just stop at Belfast instead  Smile

Great videos. In the second one after takeoff from SNN you can see the area I live in!

The US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facilities in Shannon are not exclusive to BA. The following flights also use the service:

CO25 (SNN-EWR)
DL123 (SNN-JFK-ATL)
US777 (SNN-PHL-TPA)

SNN has spent €21m on upgrading the airport for the new CBP facilities. I'd imagine the Department of Homeland Security pays their wages.

They do a second safety demo (manual, as there are no video screens) in Shannon, yes.

I doubt they would consider picking up passengers in Shannon. It would alter the service routines on board for a start and I doubt very much that there is any demand. Also, passengers on the return would have to go JFK-LHR-SNN or have a long layover in LCY.

I don't think Belfast has the US preclearance facility either, as it is in the UK and not Ireland.

I enjoyed the video presentation of your flight, it's a flight i'd like to take one day. I do hope BA is successful in carving out and maintaining this niche service, especially given the trying economic situation the carrier is in.

I have no criticism on the medium in which the report was done, i'd have liked to see more of the amenities and food and beverage on board in the videos and perhaps a bit more write-up so we can really be engrossed in the experience, but as you alluded to in a previous post, you were much too busy living the good life! I cannot blame you!

All in all, a very good report with a twist, looking forward to more like this from you (and other members).

Lennon

Some people on YouTube have asked about the pilots on these flights.

The flight crew are 'based' at London Gatwick, where they report for duty. They are then bussed to a hotel in London and stay a night. They then operate operate LCY-SNN and change for a new crew. The day after, they operate SNN-JFK and then the day after that, operate the return to LCY.

Currently the crew consists of two Airbus pilots and a B777 pilot trained in ETOPS procedures, until the service gets more established, at which point the B777 pilot will be removed.

Cabin crew report to Gatwick, are bussed to London, stay overnight in a hotel, operate LCY-SNN-JFK, stay a night in JFK and then operate JFK-LCY the following evening.

I pity the poor 777 pilot who has to occupy the jumpseat all the way across the pond as it gets rather hard after an hour... Or is one of the cabin seats blocked off for him to occupy during cruise?

Thanks for sharing the videos.
