UA LAX-ORD-ALB With Pics!

Sun Nov 22, 2009 3:11 am

Backround: I had enjoyed my trip in Valencia, but sadly it was time to return home. Coming to LAX I had the pleasure of flying on a 777, a fine American-built machine. This time I would be flying on a 757 home. Since it was a red-eye I had purchased a ticket in Y+ on the LAX-ORD segment.

Boarding time was at 1028 PM, PST respectively. I was dropped off at 9:30 and to my surprise the security line was minimal. I walked around the terminal and watched the SYD flight board.

One thing I love about UA is there great Information screens at the gate. I love it when it shows you the aircraft your flying on, and the picture of your destination.

My plane, I apologize for the bad pic.

Boarding began soon at about 1030 P.M. and my journey home had begun.

Scheduled Departure Time: 10:58
Actual:11:16
Flight Time:3:25, scheduled 3:58
Average Speed: 467 knts
Altitude: 37000 ft
Scheduled Arrival Time: 440 AM
Actual: 441 AM

I was welcomed aboard by the chief FA and quickly found my seat 12D. I found that there was a man of Asian decent sitting in my seat. He spoke no english and he wouldn't get up. I didn't know what to do. After about 10 mins of showing him my boarding card and the seat number over the overhead bin, he moved. Soon a lady came and occupied the seats between us and we began talking. Then her son came onboard and she switched seats with the a lady of Asian decent who happened to be the guys wife. I soon became the translator for the flight.

We soon pushed back and the safety video was played. It was hard to hear because of the ventilation system. I was surprised to see that the Domestic 757 had no life vests, just flotation cushions. We took off over Marina del Ray and turned East for Chicago.

The flight attendents began beverage service and to my disappointment there was not even a morsel to munch on, and sadly I was starving. I ordered a cran-apple and a coffee. The flight attendent could not understand the language the couple sitting next to me was speaking, and she kept asking me if I understood. I must have said NO! like 10 times. She finally gave them a tea.

Afterwards, a movie was shown, I forget the title, but it was the cartoon one about Monsters, which was followed by some show teaching you how to make paint balls.

I tried to sleep, and normally I can't sleep on planes, so I was just squirming around. Everyone on the plane was looking at me, which was pretty funny. In addition to my restlessness, I was hungry.

Eventually, the time passed and soon came the "sunshine service" which was a choice of water or orange juice, but no coffee.

We landed and to my disappointment the shuttle was not running, so I had to walk over to the commuter gates. (I was disapointed as I could not get on the 320 flight leaving later)

I slept a little and finally I woke up because people were trying to sit down. Again, I love the Information Screens and they showed a beautiful picture of the Empire State Plaza and the Egg iluminated at night. I wanted to take a picture but I was kinda scared that people were gonna be looking at me. Boarding began at about 6:00 am.

There isnt much to say about this flight except that the flight attendent had a nicer uniform than the mainline FAs, I loved the UA Express scarf. The coffee tasted like silicone mixed with pee and a tiny bit of food coloring. Other than that I was basically passed out in my seat.

UA did a great job on both my inbound and outbound trips and I will definitely fly them again, even after all the bad stuff people said about them. The only other trip I did with them was on TED which was also great.

Good stuff but seriously, did you expect any kind of snack or food service on a 3 hour flight departing at 11pm?!

On the Calgary-Toronto AC146 (typically departing 12:25AM) they always offer AC's onboard cafe service. I was on this, and was really hungry, so I bought a pizza.

Well, the red-eye that flies to IAD offers snack boxes, they should at least offer a-la-carte snacks.

Ah, they were serving the good stuff! I guess I've gotten too used to the coffee that tastes like cumin, mold, and Lake Erie water. LOL!

Those are definitely awesome. I flew a few times on standby 2 months ago and it was great knowing ahead of time how many seats were available and where I stood on the list.

I don't think you were allowed to take home the safety manuals and the headset!

Headsets can be but the safety briefing cards no. I think the safey cards even says that it is supposed to be left on the plane, at least OO's does from what I can remember.

Ah, its nice to see a TR involving an ORD-ALB segment.

I usually never take the ORD-ALB flight if it's on a CR7 or an E145, unless I absolutely have to. I'm sure that flight on the CR2 was, as always, a little less comfortable than the E145. Although that could just be me...

Yes, it was painful, but at least I scored the bulkhead. The A320 flight left at 9?

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the report/pics. Am currently in the US on holiday and have taken a couple of flights on American Airlines and I too was quite happy with the flights. They don't give you free food but they do give you a drink and the scenery is always good too (and the flights I found were not too expensive too). I have a flight with United Express from Chicago to Minneapolis too which should be quite cool. Would love to write a trip report or two but like you mentioned I feel people are a little more weary of a guy suspiciously taking photos of everything so I will see how it goes (I enjoy the flights anyway).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

quick observation, I noticed that your safety card says "ERJ145" when you flew on a CRJ200

Very nice. A snack would of been nice, but 2 drink services are good. I have always liked United and the Economy Plus idea.
