RE: Flying Mugabe's Private Jet: Air Zimbabwe KUL-PEK

Wed Aug 11, 2010 6:07 pm

Hi there Airpearl,

It is always exciting to see another masterclass in prose from our resident writer and this trip report was definitely no different.

The pictures were excellent and the (often bizarre) detail was just the same. This is without a doubt one of the more interesting airlines we have had in recent memory, so thank you for taking us along the ride with you.

Hi,

Fantastic report beautifull pics, a gem for this forum!!!

In the past i was thinking flying out London with UM as the fares were reasonnable (around $650 in Y and $1000 in J), but i was reluctant about the quality, Anyway your test for us is much appreciated

The sign attracts my fellow passengers to the counter (they'd probably been lurking around lost, like me earlier) - all three of them soon fall into line behind me. A queue: now, that must be a rare sight for UM's Beijing-bound flight

this comment made my day!

Great report.

Heh, I wonder if one of the reasons for the SIN->KUL shift is because KLIA also tends to be more flexible with late payments...

Interesting report. I had no idea that UM flew KUL-PEK. Looks like the service was similar to my BK-PEK on MS (in J) - i.e. a tiny bit of food/service, then nothing for the next 3/4 hours. At least UM has beer!

Quoting airpearl (Thread starter):
In that context, the magazine's strange route map page seems appropriate. Most destinations are unnamed, the airline's longest route is represented by two 3-letter IATA codes, while the maps of Zimbabwe and indeed the whole continent of Africa are missing. Escaping to London appears to be the only hope, it seems to be saying.

That is a pathetic map - it really pains me to see it. I always turn to the map as soon as I an inflight magazine just to have a look. I'd have been very dissapointed to see that!

Definite possibility... hehehe. AirAsia dragged their payment for years!

Yes, I saw that snippet of news too... wonder which of his private jets he took.

The route map page tells you a lot about the airline you're flying on I think. UM's speaks volumes actually.

The fare I paid for Y class was MYR1141 ($367) including fuel surchange, taxes. The all-inclusive J class fare was MYR3191 ($1026). Neither are the cheapest around though. If you're thinking of flying the route, you might have to watch out for progress on the current pilots' strike. Latest reports suggest longhaul flights are still suspended.
