Channel Islands: HEL-TXL-DUS-JER-GCI-SOU/LHR-HEL

Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:09 pm

Introduction

This trip started as another el cheapo HEL-DUS ticket on Air Berlin for 29 EUR booked well (think half a year or so) in advance for a Saturday in September, coincidentally happening to also be the memorial day of certain world-changing events in New York...

Well, in May Air Berlin made considerable changes to their Helsinki operation, making the TXL flight twice daily and the DUS one just a daily one - it used to be the other way around. Anyway as a result of this I was rebooked on the single remaining afternoon flight instead of the morning flight. I didn’t really like this as I had plenty of ideas to connect to somewhere from DUS and the morning flight was essential for making those work, so after a bit of arm wrestling with the AB service center they finally rebooked me on the morning flight to TXL and onwards to DUS from there.

Then something happened - I guess I got too preoccupied with other travel and plans that I didn’t give this stub of a trip much thought for a couple of months or so. By the time I got it back on the planning board in early July fares had hiked considerably on the flights I had initially thought about - these included Aegean to SKG/ATH or a Condor 753 to PMI. Bummer, but I can only blame myself. So I continued my search and soon found a decent price of around 70 EUR on the seasonal AB service DUS-JER which offered a perfect connection from my earlier flights so I decided to book that. I have been to Jersey before but somehow the idea of flying an AB 319 there appealed to me a lot.

Of course being around the Channel Islands meant that I had a good chance to fly Blue Islands, a carrier which I haven’t flown before. I flew the other carrier offering inter-Island trips - Aurigny on my previous trip there so it would be nice to try out the competition. After a bit of searching I settled for Jersey-Guernsey on Saturday evening for 30 quid. Unfortunately the equipment was scheduled to be a rather boring ATR for this very short hop (to date it remains the shortest flight in my log), but there weren’t really any good alternatives.

I decided to overnight at Guernsey and continue my trip the next morning. There were plenty of connection options back to mainland Britain, but I wanted to add a new airport to my log and Southampton seemed to be the ideal choice, with FlyBE selling me a ticket for 36 Sterling.

Finally to get back home I had a number of options, including another BE flight up to MAN and Ezy from there, but the BE flight was a bit pricey (Ezy of course was not!). BA was offering the evening flight LHR-HEL for 106 EUR (the noon flight was even cheaper but too early for me) and since connections to London from Southampton are frequent and good I booked that.

This is what the flights ended up looking:

http://www.gcmap.com/map?P=HEL-TXL-DUS-JER-GCI-SOU,+LHR-HEL&MS=bm&MR=180&MX=720x360&PM=*

With plenty of time at my hands between SOU and LHR I looked into the possibility of having a quick a.net (pub) meet with some of the London area regulars - there sure are plenty of you around there! In the end we managed to fix an afternoon meeting of beer and hopefully some Sunday roast as well at a pub near Heathrow with Mark (BA319-131) and Andrew (brewox).

As part of setting up the pub meet I had to fix my schedules to London - and the train fares were very high - 30 quid for a simple second class ticket. And that was only to Waterloo, with more money (and time) needed to reach Heathrow. However National Express offered a number of convenient bus departures direct to Heathrow for around half that price, so that was really a no brainer - I do like trains but no that much, thank you very much!

Enough blabbering, let’s get on with the action, shall we?

Saturday 11.9.2010

Another early morning departure, luckily this time with a perfectly working OLCI so I catch a bus just an hour before departure and arrive at HEL T2 with around 45 minutes to go. Once through security (not many people, but all the people who are there seem to be on the number of charter flights departing soon and fall into the category “Oh, I can’t bring a litre of water and a six pack of beer through the security and what do you mean by taking off my belt?!” so it is a bit of a frustrating experience). My timing is perfect, however as just when I’m paying for my bottle of water (can’t fly without it!) boarding is called, already around 35 minutes before departure.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Helsinki_Departure_1.jpg

I can’t catch the reg from the window, will have do to it at TXL I guess. It still is the expected A319. It turned out to be D-ABGS, my second flight on this one, first one was HAM-PMI back in January.

HEL - TXL
AB8311
A319 D-ABGS
Seat 25F
6.37 - 7.20

My seat on the last row turns out to be a good choice once again, only the A seat is occupied by an UM kid and all the others are empty. Well, for a while at least as an elderly couple, where the woman is a “passenger of size” soon move over from somewhere further up the plane, luckily sitting on the aisle seats and leaving the middle seat free. Fine by me. Load in general is very good, 95% or so.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Helsinki_Departure_3.jpg

I’m happy to notice that they have introduced new boarding music, I was getting rather tired of the old one. Flight time is announced as 1h35mins and we manage to depart three minutes early, taking off from 22R a couple of minutes later.

This never fails to crack me up - Tallinn, the Atlantis of the Baltic:

Finally breaking through the clouds:

Service is the cookie cutter AB intra-European service - a drinks round and a cheese or turkey sandwich. The cheese one is good as usually, washed down with some decent coffee:

Hello, mainland Europe:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_Approach_1.jpg

It is a quick and quiet flight, and by 7.00, around than 1h15mins after take off we are already descending again.

Berlin is engulfed in fog this morning:

Landing is on runway 26L after the promised 1h35mins of flight. The Russian lady in front of me kept her seat reclined all through the landing - the FAs said nothing and she didn’t respond to my kicking of the seat back either. Finally after touchdown she puts it upright.

Hmm, what’s that Antonov doing here:

I’m disappointed to see that we dock to the main terminal building - expecting the connection to DUS to leave from the shacklike C-terminal which is a bit of a hike away and the need to reclear security doesn’t exactly appear to me.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_Approach_11.jpg

Berlin Tegel Airport

I manage to catch the registration from a window in the jetway:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_Approach_12.jpg

Actually a German guy seems to be doing the same, so maybe I’m not the only one logging this flight. My disappointment at arriving in the main terminal soon turns into joy as I see from the FIDS monitors that the DUS flight is actually departing from here as well, just two gates over.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_1.jpg

Ok, I guess that explains the An-2:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_2.jpg

I head to take a look at the wares on offer in the Lufthansa Worldshop, but decide to save my money this time. They do have some tempting plane models and stuff, so maybe next time I’m here (which is not too far away actually). Back to the gate and through security to the tiny waiting area. All the offerings in the magazine/newspaper rack are nur im Deutsch - but the variety is rather interesting as they have an auto mag, a computer mag and of course the German version of Playboy in addition to the usual stuff. I decide to grab the Playboy (to practice my Deutsch on the articles, of course!) - as a side note Mark was most intrigued by this during our meeting next day!

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Tegel_Departure_1.jpg

The inbound flight arrives at 7.55, the expected A320 in the old maroon Air Berlin livery. I can’t quite catch the registration (is this becoming a pattern?), just see Delta Alpha on the front gear door. Later at DUS I see it is D-ABDA, a new plane for me. Boarding starts 20 minutes later, first an UM (again sitting on the last row A seat - I guess this is SOP for AB, weird actually as on pretty much all other airlines the UMs are always on the front rows) is escorted onboard and then some sort of a VIP person - an old, white-haired man wearing a fancy suit and his wife - all the gate agents are bending over backwards to make sure he is happy and comfortable - wonder who that was?

TXL - DUS
AB6439
A320 D-ABDA

Anyway once the pariah are accepted for boarding I, in my usual style am the first one to board the plane. Second last row this time, again an empty middle seat next to me despite a rather good load of 85-90%. Flight time is announced as 50 minutes, with push back two minutes late. .

The rather massive AB operation over the C terminal:

Soon we disappear into the clouds.

Service is again cookie cutter AB on domestic morning flights - drinks plus a warm, very soft and nice, Laugen roll:

Weather gets noticeably better in the west:

A bit over half an hour into the flight our female FO announces descent and landing in 20 minutes. We spend a bit of a time making some curves in a holding pattern somewhere over the industrial heartlands of the Ruhr before going for the final approach:

Landing on runway 23L is very rough, there’s a bit of crosswind as well so it feels rather wobbly, followed by very heavy braking action.

With around three hours to go before the Jersey flight and terrific weather outside it is quite clear where I head next:

Wacht am Rhein - one Air France relieving the other:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Dusseldorf_17.jpg

Later on I head back inside, decide to pay the Aviation Store a visit - bad idea as I just have to buy something - but a good idea as well since I end up chatting for a long time with the owner, a very friendly and interesting German man who used to live in the US for a long time. Far too soon I have to head for my next flight, however, so bid him farewell and promise to return in the future - my current schedule has me back at DUS in December.

I head back through security to the B gates area. Very efficient in true German style, although the guy manning the X-ray on my lane is more interested in flirting with hot girls than actually looking at his screen. I buy a can of beer from a store (hey, why haven’t I thought of this before - it is way cheaper then the overpriced bars here!), pass through the passport control to the non-Schengen corner and sit down to enjoy my malted beverage and wait.

Soon myself and a couple of other passengers are paged to the Jersey gate. I oblige and ask what’s wrong - well apparently since we checked in online they need to input our travel document details manually into the system. The OLCI, of course, did prompt me to enter the exactly same details when I did the check in, but apparently this doesn’t really work. Sweet. Once done I ask how long til boarding - “5-10 minutes”.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Dusseldorf_18.jpg

Good time for more plane watching:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Dusseldorf_19.jpg

Well, it’s more like 20 minutes before boarding is finally called, 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Interestingly the girl in front of me has a boarding pass issued on airBaltic stock, once she passes the gate I see she has a Latvian passport as well so I guess she came from RIX on the BT flight. Interesting that they were able to do the interline check in. Boarding is by bus, so down some flights of stairs and to the waiting bus.

Yes, we all hate FOD:

Quite a bit of waiting in the bus as well before we finally pull off. Not many people, less than 40 pax - so looks like a very light load. I think this is one of the last flights on this seasonal route, so I guess that explains it. I’m surprised to see that we stop in front of an A319 instead of the expected 738 (also featured on the OLCI seatmap yesterday). It’s D-ABGL, a new one for me.

DUS - JER
AB3144
A319 D-ABGL
Seat 3A
13.26 - 13.47

With the light load the boarding is completed rather fast. Soon our captain with perfect American English (who is also fluent in German) comes on and apologises for the delay, explaining it with the slow deboarding of passengers from the previous flight. Apparently they were a few “special passengers” and “ground handling could get the last one of them off the plane only at 12.59”. This means we missed our original slot (ahh, the wonders of the European ATC system) and have been assigned a new one at 13.40. Flight time today will be 1h10mins.

I’m not sure where this one was going, but it was definitely landing somewhere somewhat southwest of Paris:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Jersey_6.jpg

Our route:

Descent starts around 55 minutes into the flight, while still over France. Leaving mainland Europe behind:

Over the sea it becomes overcast, we only break the clouds once we are already on short finals into JER:

That’s quite a few planes:

We land on runway 27 after 1h7mins of flight time.

Jersey

My brief encounter with the UK border is quite possibly the friendliest one I’ve ever had - and one of the quickest ones as well. Very quickly I’m through the terminal and arrivals facilities, located in the old terminal building and emerge outside. With almost four hours to the next flight don’t really fancy staying at the airport and am happy to find that the next bus to St Helier will leave in just a couple of minutes.

The old terminal building, used for arrivals nowadays:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Approach_10.jpg

The new terminal building, used for all departures:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_1.jpg

I decide to go only to Saint Aubin, a nice little village with a delightful marina and beach just across the bay from St Helier. I walk around for a while, wondering the good number of German tourists on the area.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_2.jpg

It’s low tide:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_3.jpg

The Saint Aubin’s Fort - accessible on foot (and cars, look closely!) during the low tide:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_4.jpg

The airport isn’t far away:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_5.jpg

Oh, I’ve never seen a Palmair plane before, must be operating a charter from the Med:

Lunch is long overdue, so some good Jersey lobster sounds like a very tempting idea:

The French influence is obvious:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_12.jpg

Soon the grey weather turns into light rain (surprise), so I retire to a bar offering free wifi (well, I have to buy a few pints for that, now that’s very hard for me...  ) and spend some time with my laptop. Funny money:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_13.jpg

Later I hop on another bus back to the airport, arriving there around 55 minutes before departure. The modern departures hall:

FIDS - that HAJ flight sounds very interesting:

Since the Channel Islands are not part of the EU, real duty free is big business:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_3.jpg

Ice Ice, baby - I wonder if Vanilla Ice is flying it:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_4.jpg

Having done OLCI it is just a matter of heading through security and to the free lounge Blue Islands is offering its customers - most of their flights are so short there’s no point to provide inflight service! Access to the lounge is by a code printed on the boarding pass.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_5.jpg

Inside the lounge is packed, looks like the ATR is definitely justified for this flight! Offerings are quite simple, soft drinks, coffee, tea and cookies and candies. There’s also quite a good selection of newspapers. I grab a soda and some cookies and luckily still find a vacant seat.

I’m not sure if I like these bright colors - they remind me of the Swedish flag:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_6.jpg

Boarding is called only five minutes before departure. The gate is directly across from the lounge.

Yep, an ATR-42 it is:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_7.jpg

G-DRFC, MSN 007, a well traveled bird indeed. It was initially delivered new to Cimber Air of Denmark in February 1986, making it almost 25 years old!

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_8.jpg

JER - GCI
SI379
ATR-42 G-DRFC
Seat 12F
17.51 - 18.05

Inside I have to kick a woman out of my last row window seat - she has the aisle seat next to me, but behaves like it is her birthright to have the window seat and like I’m doing something wrong by having that seat. All throughout the (luckily very short) flight she keeps giving me bad stares, especially when I pull out my camera and proceed shooting lots and lots of photos.

These look like the original Cimber seats - complete with (mostly peeled off) Danish stickers:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_9.jpg

The plane appears to be completely full, I don’t spot any vacant seats. I guess the use of the ATR is justified on this Saturday evening rotation.

No announcement about the flight time is made. Departure is six minutes late, and take off from runway 27 after a FlyBE Dash a few minutes later. BA has arrived in the mean time:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_10.jpg

That looks interesting:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_11.jpg

Is that another An-2?

Bye Jersey - shame about the weather, I couldn’t see the famous observation tower on top of these rocks built by the Germans during the war:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_16.jpg

We never get too high:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Jersey_Departure_17.jpg

This is a really fun flight, from take off to touch down at Guernsey takes exactly ten minutes and we fly quite low, giving excellent views of the surroundings. The flight follows an S pattern, after take off a right turn towards the north and another left turn once reaching Guernsey to line up with runway 27 there.

The island of Sark is the first indication that we are nearing Guernsey:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_1.jpg

Guernsey itself follows a few seconds later:

The capital of the island, St. Peter Port or just “town” as it is locally known:

The previous time I flew this route it was an Aurigny Trislander, that flight was very memorable as well, since I was the only pax on that early Sunday morning flight and sat right behind the pilot. It felt like a private plane. The Trislander however is a slower plane so it took at least 15 minutes.

Oh, I didn’t know VLM (or CityJet nowadays) flew here:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_9.jpg

The Trislanders look so funny:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_10.jpg

We taxi to a parking position quite apart from the main apron in front of the terminal building for a bus ride. As a side note the Blue Islands inflight mag listed “A courtesy bus to and from the plane at Guernsey” as one of the advantages (together with the lounge access, free checked in luggage allowance etc.) of flying with them. Considering that the distance to the terminal building is less than hundred meters anyway and is via a covered walkway I fail to see the point - a bit silly really!

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_11.jpg

I wait to be the last one to deboard to take some photos of the cabin:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_12.jpg

As there are two pax in wheelchairs the bus is rather packed. I could’ve easily walked the distance - would’ve been faster anyway! Not sure why there’s a Swiss flag on the dashboard, the driver sure isn’t Swiss:

Guernsey

The pretty nice modern terminal built six years ago:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Approach_15.jpg

My initial plan was to take a bus to town and spend some time there before making my way to my hotel somewhere in the middle of nowhere (which on this small island of course is not too far away from any other place) , but I’m feeling rather lazy and decide to take a taxi straight to the hotel. Probably a good idea as I think I’d be lost in a minute if dealing with the bus system - the small winding roads and overgrown vegetation have me confused over no time - something which is not too common for me.

15 minutes and 10 pounds later I get dropped off at my hotel, the Le Friquet Country Hotel. I had some problems finding an affordable hotel - most of the ones in town were well over hundred quid. Luckily this one popped up for less than 60. A really old fashioned property (well, the building is probably at least 200 years old) with a genuine 70’s feeling but it actually made for a rather nice atmosphere. My room - the bed cover is definitely a blast from the past:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Hotel_1.jpg

As an added bonus they had free wifi throughout, not something I really expected to be honest!

I had dinner at the (yes, you guessed it) old fashioned dining room (they didn’t even call it a restaurant, it was just “dining room”) - I must’ve been the youngest guest there as all the others were well over 60! Afterwards I called it an early night and retired for some really good sleep.

More funny money:

Sunday 12.9.2010

After a bit of a sleep in I wake up to a gorgeous beautiful sunny morning. I head downstairs a bit early for my prebooked taxi to have a small walk around the hotel grounds:

They even have a pool:

Looks like a giant pineapple:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Hotel_9.jpg

The taxi pulls in right on the spot and another 15 minutes later I’m back at the airport, 55 minutes before departure. I try to use the FlyBE self-service kiosk, it all goes fine until it should print my boarding pass when it dies with the message “Please contact a check-in desk” and prints me a piece of paper with the same information and my PNR.

Off to the desk I go, where a friendly young trainee agent is very confused by my the paper and my problem, but manages to check me in just fine. After I notice that I’d been assigned an aisle seat I ask for 3A as I was able to select that one from the kiosk - this apparently is too tricky as his more experienced colleague does it for him and hands me a new boarding pass.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Departure_1.jpg

I love the “Newspapers” flight - just in time for morning delivery:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Departure_2.jpg

Upstairs there’s a large cafe with excellent apron views, so I head there for a bit of a breakfast - the Latvian barista wants to give my change in Guernsey pounds and has some problem finding enough Sterling after I insist on having something more usable for the mainland.

My ride from yesterday, departing for ZRH via JER:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Departure_3.jpg

There’s an overnighting BE Dash here, looks like my ride:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Guernsey_Departure_5.jpg

After finishing my cappuccino I head downstairs and through security to the rather packed gate area. I have just enough time to buy a bottle of duty free booze (Finlandia Vodka, of course) for the boys in London, check out the toilet facilities and buy a bottle of water before boarding is called. The plane indeed turns out to be the one I photographed earlier, G-JEDT, a new one for me.

A good load on this flight, most of the seats are full. A rather large man takes 3B, but after seeing that the bulkhead row is free we decide that it is probably a good idea for him to move there and after confirming with the crew he indeed does.

The captain pops in (via the PA, of course), welcomes everyone onboard and explains our flight as “Take off towards the west, followed by a right turn and climbing to our cruising altitude of 15000 feet and straight towards Southampton.” Weather there is apparently similar to here - i.e. sunny and very beautiful and the whole ordeal should take less than 30 minutes.

Looks like a bit of crosswind:

Departure is pretty much on time and take off from 27 with great views over the island and the sea:

Despite the short duration of this flight the two male FAs manage to pass the cabin with a cartful of duty free cigarettes (they even announce the special offer prices over the PA) and the BOB trolley as well. I wouldn’t call it dining, though:

Southampton

I hit the taxi desk to get a taxi to the National Express coach station and end up with a rather nice elderly gentleman as my driver. It is quite a bit further than I imagined it to be, but we have a nice conversation about the budget deficit, state of the economy and all kinds of things, really. Once we finally arrive at the coach station I realize that the Southampton Central railway station is just a stone’s throw away, should’ve done my homework better and saved some money by taking the train.

The coach station is located in the middle of a retail park:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_2.jpg

I have a bit of a time before the coach so I walk around for a bit - the weather is simply gorgeous. Part of the Southampton city walls:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_3.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_4.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_6.jpg

Yep, cruise ships are big business here:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_7.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_8.jpg

The endless parking lots and strip malls of this temple to consumerism soon make me quite depressed, so it’s time to head back and catch the National Express 203 service to London Heathrow airport:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_9.jpg

The front row is meant for wheelchairs - not that there are any onboard today so I grab it for the excellent legroom:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Southampton_10.jpg

There’s a funny, tiny old lady sitting on the seat behind me - she asks very loudly “Is this Southampton - I can’t see a bloody thing as I’m too small!”.

The bus makes two stops enroute - first in Winchester, a very charming looking medieval town which makes me want to come back some time soon and the second time in Basingstoke, which is quite the opposite and makes me want to stay away forever.

Since it is Sunday the traffic isn’t bad at all and we actually pull at Heathrow T5 a good half an hour ahead of schedule. T5 indeed looks rather impressive when arriving by road:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_1.jpg

Heathrow

I did OLCI the previous day (and snagged 4A which showed up as a Club Europe seat - i.e. with only 4AC available on the seat map) but couldn’t print out my boarding pass. So I head first to the departures level to see if I could print one off from the self-service kiosks - but they refuse me with the message “Your flight departs from another terminal.” - yes, that is true, but you could still print me a boarding pass, couldn’t you? I decide to try my luck at a vacant bag drop desk where a nice Portuguese girl first says that it is not possible but after I say that I did indeed check in online she manages to do it anyway. I thank her and head off to find Mark and Andrew.

I find the guys in the nearby pub - now is that a surprise or what! Actually I’ve never been to T5 departures before, so am quite impressed by this “Taj Mahal of a terminal” like MOL put it:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_2.jpg

After a bit of chitchat we head to the nearby village of Longford, just a 10-15 minute walk away. There’s something about standing right underneath a 747 taking off:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_3.jpg

Longford is actually quite a charming village - apart from the constant noise of take offs from the nearby 27R. We hit a charming pub for a lunch:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_4.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_5.jpg

Afterwards we head to the nearby Thistle Heathrow hotel whose upstairs bar has a quite lovely viewing terrace overlooking the airport. Too bad the runway switch occurred just before we got there, so all the take offs are now on the distant 27L.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_6.jpg

Time flies when you’re watching planes or drinking beer (this time both of them so I guess it flew twice as fast) so all too soon it is time for me to head to T3 for my homeward flight. I bid the guys adios (Thanks again - I had a blast!) and catch the Hotel Hoppa bus (which for 4 pounds is quite a rip off IMHO). I arrive at T3 around 17.00. Not sure why these guys are queuing outside:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_7.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_8.jpg

Security is the usual Heathrow mess and the departures lounge is packed to the gills. Luckily I have lounge access (thanks to my recently reacquired Diners Club card) so I head off to find the Servisair lounge, well hidden at the end of a dingy corridor. It’s not the greatest of lounges and very much packed, but it’s better than public areas, though:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_9.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_10.jpg

Not too much time to spend here before the flight status changes to boarding. Luckily gate 24 is not too far away.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_1.jpg

The first bus has already left but I make it to the second one. The plane is parked nearby and is G-EUYI, a new example, having been delivered to BA just three months previously. Needless to say a new one for me as well as it’s been a longer than that since I last flew BA!

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_2.jpg

The plane still has the new plane smell. It is nice to find the seats in impeccable condition as opposed to the older ones in the fleet, some of those seats are literally falling apart and feel very tatty! The legroom on row 4 is excellent:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_4.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_5.jpg

Yes, it indeed is the latest interior:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_6.jpg

Row 4 is the first row of economy. The seat is not in the (wider) Club Europe configuration, but despite economy being pretty much full (4 pax in Club Europe) the middle seat stays empty so I think it was still blocked in the system.

Still queuing:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_7.jpg

Is that a trophy?

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_8.jpg

This plane also has an updated (and very nice!) version of the airshow - stayed on during the whole flight:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_9.jpg

I witness one British girl trying to self-upgrade herself - she fights her way upstream against the boarding passengers and sits down in CE. A couple of minutes later after she exchanges a few words with the purser she retreats back to the bowels of economy and I never see her again...

Right at our scheduled departure time of 18.20 the captain comes on, welcomes everybody onboard and then gives us this speech: “Well, as far as British Airways is concerned we are ready to go, but unfortunately I have some bad news for you. Apparently the ATC computer at Maastricht went down a while ago and has caused some significant delays for all air traffic in Europe. We have at the moment a departure slot an hour from now. We will of course try to get an earlier slot or a more direct routing, but so do all the other planes. In the mean time I will switch off the seat belt sign and let you use your computers and mobile phones. Apologies for this and thank you for flying British Airways!”.

Just ten minutes later the captain is back with the good news that we were able to get a bit earlier slot in 35 minutes but we need to vacate this parking spot for arriving planes right now, so we will taxi to a holding point nearer the runway and wait there. Pretty soon we get pushed back, 15 minutes late.

Who has the right of way:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_10.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_11.jpg

Will be flying here on one of these in January:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_12.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_13.jpg

We taxi slowly towards the holding point for runway 27L. Passing the dummy fire practice plane:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_14.jpg

Once the (Finnish) guys in the row behind me see this they actually start to speculate “Oh, that’s a weird looking plane. I wonder if they covered the windows or did they have to fly blind?” - “Nowadays you have all kinds of planes. Why did they have to paint it green - it looks so ugly?”. I almost want to scream but am too Finnish to say anything to them...  .

The queue in front of us:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_15.jpg

Swiss before us:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_16.jpg

We indeed take off right at 19.05, 45 minutes late.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_17.jpg

There’s a shorter queue on the T4 side:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_26.jpg

Those planes remind me of ants:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Heathrow_Departure_27.jpg

Soon after leaving the UK behind the service commences - a rather nice and fresh tuna sandwich:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_1.jpg

I ask for “a couple of beers” but only receive one and “maybe another one later in the flight”. Needless to say the second one never comes. Is this a new cutback - previously I’ve always been able to get a couple of drinks on BA?

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_2.jpg

The sun going down over the North Sea:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_3.jpg

Nearing Denmark:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_4.jpg

Routing is the standard one, across the North Sea to The Netherlands, over the Ijsselmeer to North Germany, CPH and across Sweden to the Baltic Sea and Finland.

Hmm, maybe I should visit Kalmar some time:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_5.jpg

Descent starts exactly two hours after take off, with seat belt sign switched on ten minutes later. The FO announces that we should be on stand in 15 minutes, some 20 minutes late.

Landing in a very wet and foggy HEL is on runway 15 after 2h21mins of flight time.

Sorry for the bad picture, but I kinda like the halo effects:

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_6.jpg

A bit later we dock to a jetway in the non-Schengen terminal extension.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac154/FlyingFinn_photo/Jersey_Guernsey_Heathrow_09_2010/Enroute_to_Helsinki_7.jpg

I actually surprise myself by making it to the bus stop in just five minutes (it is quite a hike!) and just manage to catch the first bus home (the next one is half an hour later, so at least I have a good incentive), arriving there around midnight.

Conclusions

A nice weekend, the Channel Islands are a very special place and something I always enjoy.

A set of very standard, very high quality flights on Air Berlin. They will do Oneworld good!

Blue Islands is an interesting niche carrier, the concept with the lounges is really good, although the ATR sure was a rather ancient and worn down plane. Good enough for a 10 minute flight, sure, but I’m not sure if I wanted to fly it all the way to GVA or ZRH. The Scot Airways D328 they used previously must’ve been so much nicer...

A good enough ride on FlyBE and finally BA as always provided a very good and consistent product (apart from the second beer, but I think that was the FA just playing his own tricks). The new plane was a great bonus as well.

And last but not least - a couple of very enjoyable hours in good company near Heathrow - too bad there wasn’t enough time (is there ever for good comradeship!?). Thanks guys, and let’s do it again anytime!

I have a couple of short hops scheduled in September, but those shouldn’t be anything to write about unless something special happens. But three weeks to go until the next bigger trip, once again zigzagging across the extremes of the European continent over the span of a single weekend doing HEL-TXL-VCE/TSF-SOF-MAD-RIX-HEL.

Happy contrails!

Hi! This is my first posting here. Have been following the trip reports forum for a long while now and especially your reports have cought my interest. I must say I'm very impressed in how you manage to so many trips for as I can see for leisure reasons. How do you make time for it all? Do you have family to take care of at home, or are you single?

Over the last four months my allready strong interest in aviation has increased and grown even stronger. I've spend a lot of time on the web browsing for cheap initiaries and funny routes and maybe some new aircraft types as well. My last trip was a daytrip with SK (WF on the first leg) flying SVG-KRS-CPH-BGO-SVG in a day using some EB-points due to run out.

I really appreciate your reports and find them very enjoyable! Always looking forward to your next report!

Happy flying!

Fi FlyingFinn,

Very nice report and lots of excellent pictures. Your report has really made me want to visit the Channel Islands as well - looks like a unique place. And some islands-flying is always fun for sure.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
So I continued my search and soon found a decent price of around 70 EUR on the seasonal AB service DUS-JER

Not bad for such a special route without any competition.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
This never fails to crack me up - Tallinn, the Atlantis of the Baltic

Amazing that they haven't changed this during the last years.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
All the offerings in the magazine/newspaper rack are nur im Deutsch - but the variety is rather interesting

I have realized this as well on AB - the selection of magazines is a bit special with some really exotic issues. My personal guess is that lots of these papers are sponsored by the publishers and AB pays very little or even nothing for some of these magazines.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I decide to grab the Playboy (to practice my Deutsch on the articles, of course!)

Good choice - practicing some language skills while travelling can never be wrong.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I decide to go only to Saint Aubin, a nice little village with a delightful marina and beach just across the bay from St Helier.

Looks like a beautiful place, great pictures.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
As a side note the Blue Islands inflight mag listed “A courtesy bus to and from the plane at Guernsey” as one of the advantages (together with the lounge access, free checked in luggage allowance etc.) of flying with them.

Interesting that they even advertise that service. Might be an advantage only during very bad weather.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
and catch the Hotel Hoppa bus (which for 4 pounds is quite a rip off IMHO)

Indeed, really over-priced. I try to avoid the Hoppa nowadays and use one of the public buses instead when possible, but of course they don't serve all places as convenient as the Hoppa.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
We fly directly over Stansted (the airport in Essex, not the village in Kent)

Great picture.

Christoph

Hey, P.:

great stuff and superb pictures.
A really fullfilled weekend with nice planes and locations and also pretty good that you finally do a A.net meet
in between. Always nice to catch good company.
I will do so also at Thursday, if nothing goes wrong.

It was, definitely, it was.

Hi FF,

You are so fast getting these reports online it's scary. I'm ashamed to say the Channel Islands are another place I've never visited, although I'd really like to take my Mum there.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I’m paying for my bottle of water (can’t fly without it!) boarding is called,

I'm with you on that one. You never know whether you might get on board and find someone forgot the drinks trolley.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Tallinn, the Atlantis of the Baltic:

I don't fancy landing there!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
again sitting on the last row A seat - I guess this is SOP for AB, weird actually as on pretty much all other airlines the UMs are always on the front rows)

Maybe it's their way of making sure the UMs don't escape when the plane lands?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
some good Jersey lobster sounds like a very tempting idea:

Now there's a surprise. How did I know you had lobster?
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
not sure if I like these bright colors - they remind me of the Swedish flag:

Remind me of Ryanair......

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
My room - the bed cover is definitely a blast from the past:

How very English!

Nice shots of the approach into SOU too. All in all a very successful weekend.

Happy flying

loved your report and some nice pics of your travels too. i went to Guernsey many years ago (well, not that many, it was in 1999 but it feels like years ago) and i really enjoyed it. i had to laugh with regard to your comments about Winchester and Basingstoke. I think many people here would agree with you entirely about your descriptions ! thanks again for posting this. P/j

Hello FF! Great report and loved every minute of it.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
and the train fares were very high - 30 quid for a simple second class ticket. And that was only to Waterloo, with more money (and time) needed to reach Heathrow.

That's South West Trains all over, costs me £13.00 for a trip into the city and its only a 25 min journey!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
The Russian lady in front of me kept her seat reclined all through the landing - the FAs said nothing and she didn’t respond to my kicking of the seat back either.

Thats so annoying, reminds me of my flight on easyJet/Air Finland on Saturday, Eastern European girl had her carry on under the seat and totally blocked the aisle and she had her feet resting on it, the crew did not even say anything to her!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
They even have a pool:

Looks like a lovely place you stayed, never would have thought there would be a pool.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I have just enough time to buy a bottle of duty free booze (Finlandia Vodka, of course) for the boys in London

Good choice.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 2):
Basingstoke, which is quite the opposite and makes me want to stay away forever.

Wise move. I went there once and that was enough. Winchester on the other hand like you said is very nice, well worth a visit.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 2):
We hit a charming pub for a lunch:

Looks like great curry. I must visit that pub sometime.

Thanks for sharing FF.

Hi FlyingFinn

I am a big fan of your trip reports, and this is no exception! Absolutely brilliant. Nice to see a report across to the UK as well.

Jersey and Guernsey are lovely, I recognise a lot of the places in Jersey you visited from when we were there a few years ago.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Looks like a catamaran:

It's the Weymouth - Guernsey - Jersey catamaran, takes about 3 hours to cross. Very uncomfortable though from my experience - would rather have taken the plane (but the car wouldn't fit in the hold  )

Good stuff, especially enjoyable pictures, thanks! The Channel Islands look so cozy, very "Bergerac". How was the price level generally, comparing to mother UK?

Hi FlyingFinn!

Very nice report with very nice pictures! The hotel room in Guernsey looks very quaint! It is a rip off with the Hotel Hoppa bus at LHR; most hotel shuttles are free at most US airports. GBP 4 for that is an outrage!!!

Bloody Bergerac!!! Jersey will never live it down... It has changed since then you know!

Haha anyway, glad to see you enjoyed the brief visit, shame the weather wasn't too great (its been a bad summer).

That HAJ flight is a charter operated by VLM (Now CityJet), i'm pretty sure it operates as a triangular route with GCI ie HAJ-JER-GCI and then GCI-JER-HAJ.

Hi FlyingFinn,

I read your Channel Island adventures with great interest, as (as you know) I was there a few weeks ago. Some of your photos brought back memories...

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Unfortunately the equipment was scheduled to be a rather boring ATR for this very short hop (to date it remains the shortest flight in my log), but there weren’t really any good alternatives.

I was also scheduled on the ATR but paid a fee (10 GBP) to be rebooked on a later Jetstream flight. Judging by your photos, I don't regret it.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
This never fails to crack me up - Tallinn, the Atlantis of the Baltic:

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I decide to grab the Playboy (to practice my Deutsch on the articles, of course!) - as a side note Mark was most intrigued by this during our meeting next day!

Well, when in a foreign country, it's always good to learn some words in the local language
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
some sort of a VIP person - an old, white-haired man wearing a fancy suit and his wife - all the gate agents are bending over backwards to make sure he is happy and comfortable - wonder who that was?

Strange, wonder that too.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Lots of folks up on the observation deck, with and without cameras, just enjoying the sunny day and the sweet smell of A-1!

Too bad there aren't more airports with observation decks. Seems like folks at DUS don't see any "security threats", the usual reason for closing observation decks, with theirs...

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I’m surprised to see that we stop in front of an A319 instead of the expected 738 (also featured on the OLCI seatmap yesterday)

As I wrote in my report, it also was a 738 when I was in JER at the end of August.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Inside the lounge is packed, looks like the ATR is definitely justified for this flight! Offerings are quite simple, soft drinks, coffee, tea and cookies and candies. There’s also quite a good selection of newspapers. I grab a soda and some cookies and luckily still find a vacant seat.

I’m not sure if I like these bright colors - they remind me of the Swedish flag:

I actually think the lounge is a nice way to wait for the flight. Nothing extraordinary, but still good when you consider it's free. It was much less packed for my Jetstream 32 flight, though.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Inside I have to kick a woman out of my last row window seat - she has the aisle seat next to me, but behaves like it is her birthright to have the window seat and like I’m doing something wrong by having that seat. All throughout the (luckily very short) flight she keeps giving me bad stares, especially when I pull out my camera and proceed shooting lots and lots of photos.

How annoying. It has happened to me multiple times that someone was seated in my assigned seat. Most of the time, I don't make any fuss about it and just sit in the nearest vacant (window   )seat, but in the case of a full flight like yours, I would have asked to get my seat like you did.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Oh, I didn’t know VLM (or CityJet nowadays) flew here:

As per Wikipedia (no time to check more reliable sources), they operate seasonal FRA, HAJ and RTM flights.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
The Trislanders look so funny:

Agreed  And they're so funny to fly, too.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I could’ve easily walked the distance - would’ve been faster anyway!

This "complimentary bus service" at GCI is indeed a funny thing. The distance from parking stand to the terminal is short even for a bad weather walk. When I arrived at GCI, we were the only active traffic at the airport and taking the short bus ride on the sleepy apron had some surreal feel...

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
the Le Friquet Country Hotel. I had some problems finding an affordable hotel - most of the ones in town were well over hundred quid. Luckily this one popped up for less than 60. A really old fashioned property (well, the building is probably at least 200 years old) with a genuine 70’s feeling but it actually made for a rather nice atmosphere.

I actually like this kind of accommodation, especially when it fits nicely with the location as is the case in Guernsey. For the records, I had the same problem finding affordable accommodation and ended up at the "Auberge du Val", a lovely place, very rural, a 45 minutes walk from the airport, for a mere 45 GBP.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I think I’d be lost in a minute if dealing with the bus system - the small winding roads and overgrown vegetation have me confused over no time - something which is not too common for me.

Exactly what happened to me, and I'm known for never getting lost. Without my hand-held GPS, I may very well never have found my hotel.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I love the “Newspapers” flight - just in time for morning delivery

I noticed this too... Very funny.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
Longford is actually quite a charming village - apart from the constant noise of take offs from the nearby 27R. We hit a charming pub for a lunch:

Looks like a nice place to wait for a flight, and the food looks superb.

--> Another nice report from you, thank you for sharing.

Hi P,

thanks for sharing this long story. Did the writing and editing takes more time then the flights itself, I guess   AB and BA very good service as we know from them. Not sure about that shabby ATR42, it's an old one, very nice to catch anyway.
And I like BA's choice for beer. They offer Dutch Heineken (strong dislike myself) and Grolsch (like it a lot, and not common at all on board!). You made the right choice

So, it seems Mark and Andrew have a good address for some nice chat and meal. I think to arrange a meet also some day LOL. Maybe combine with some spotting on a crisp winter day, hopefully.

Regards
Eric

Hi all - good to see all those comments. Always appreciated - thanks and keep 'em coming!

Quoting westernflyer (Reply 3):
I must say I'm very impressed in how you manage to so many trips for as I can see for leisure reasons. How do you make time for it all?

It's a matter of prioritization I guess. This year has been a bit crazy - due to many reasons I've had quite a bit of free time on my hands and I've spent most of that on travel. It will probably slow down somewhat next year, but hopefully not too much!

Otherwise, let's keep the civil life private for now, shall we? Thank you.

Quoting westernflyer (Reply 3):
My last trip was a daytrip with SK (WF on the first leg) flying SVG-KRS-CPH-BGO-SVG in a day using some EB-points due to run out.

Sounds good. Are the domestic SAS Fokkers gone now - I thought the first leg used to be flown on those? Any chance for a report?

Quoting westernflyer (Reply 3):
I really appreciate your reports and find them very enjoyable! Always looking forward to your next report!

Thank you. I quite enjoy doodling them as well!

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 4):
Your report has really made me want to visit the Channel Islands as well - looks like a unique place. And some islands-flying is always fun for sure.

Yeah, they are quite an unique place indeed - a nice mix between French, English and relaxed island life. Very prosperous as well - as you'd expect tax havens to be! Just do it during the summer season, the winters can be horrible. My previous time there was in November and it was gray, cold and wet - rather depressing actually! Alderney is still missing from my log, so I might be due for a revisit at some point.

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 4):

Not bad for such a special route without any competition.

I guess it had to do with the low load - the season is over for most Germans. Speaking of your people there were quite a few Germans around - I guess the earlier flights have been quite popular.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 6):
You are so fast getting these reports online it's scary.

Lutheran work ethics - something Finns are quite famous for!
Quoting infodesk (Reply 6):
I'm ashamed to say the Channel Islands are another place I've never visited, although I'd really like to take my Mum there.

Scary - you are British but it starts to sound like I've been to more places around the UK than you!

Quoting infodesk (Reply 6):
Maybe it's their way of making sure the UMs don't escape when the plane lands?

Might be, although on many airports they deboard from both doors. I guess it is more to keep them nearby the FAs, on both flights whenever one of them was visiting the rear galley they always checked on the minors.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 6):
Now there's a surprise. How did I know you had lobster?

Telepathy?

Quoting infodesk (Reply 6):
How very English!

Watch your words! I don't think the Guernsey people would like that comment  . They seem to be quite proud of their autonomy - the island is not part of the United Kingdom nor the EU, although it is a part of the British Isles and the Common Travel Area.

Quoting Palmjet (Reply 7):
i had to laugh with regard to your comments about Winchester and Basingstoke. I think many people here would agree with you entirely about your descriptions

And this was just judging the places from the coach! Actually the English text book series we used in elementary school was set in Winchester so it felt somewhat familiar.

Quoting signol (Reply 8):
You know the normal, local busses are free around Heathrow?

No, actually I didn't. Thanks, I'll have to keep that in mind. The stop at the Thistle was not really planned in advance - we just somehow ended up there so I didn't have a solid plan for getting to T3 - the Hoppa just was first thing that sprang into my mind.

Quoting DunaA320 (Reply 9):
That's South West Trains all over, costs me £13.00 for a trip into the city and its only a 25 min journey!

Oh really? That's a rip off, and makes me feel somewhat better for paying sixteen quid for the cab!

Quoting DunaA320 (Reply 9):
Thats so annoying, reminds me of my flight on easyJet/Air Finland on Saturday, Eastern European girl had her carry on under the seat and totally blocked the aisle and she had her feet resting on it, the crew did not even say anything to her!

Now that's bad! Was that Ezy or OF crew? Any chance of making a report, would love to see one about the OF 757 in Ezy colors!

Quoting DunaA320 (Reply 9):
I have just enough time to buy a bottle of duty free booze (Finlandia Vodka, of course) for the boys in London
Good choice.

Well, I'm a Finn so there are two choices - either that or the black gooey stuff but they didn't sell that!

Quoting DunaA320 (Reply 9):
Looks like great curry. I must visit that pub sometime.
Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 14):
Looks like a nice place to wait for a flight, and the food looks superb

Looks can be deceiving - it was ok as far as pub curry goes, but no match for any decent curry house. This was supposed to be Madras, but was for too tame for that (or to my tastes, I prefer my curries hot hot hot).

Quoting noelg (Reply 10):
I am a big fan of your trip reports, and this is no exception! Absolutely brilliant.

Thanks!

Quoting andaman (Reply 11):
How was the price level generally, comparing to mother UK?

Again, watch out your words - this is a bit like calling the Welsh "English"  . Anyway as the islands are a tax haven (Guernsey has no VAT, no capital gains or inheritance tax and income is taxed at flat 20%, Jersey is probably similar) the prices are somewhat cheaper than on the mainland. Not too much, though, I'd estimate them to be UK prices minus VAT. My gut feeling is that Guernsey is a bit cheaper than Jersey. It is also far more tranquil and rural against the jetset of Jersey, and I actually like it more.

Quoting andaman (Reply 11):
Finnair's Panasonic AVOD on their wide bodies has similar '3D' graphics.

Pegasus had it as well on their new 738s.

Quoting JER757 (Reply 13):

Thanks! When editing the pictures for this report I realized the same - I photographed the Fokker I at GCI. Are these purely for tourists or is there some other market segment for them?

Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 14):

I was also scheduled on the ATR but paid a fee (10 GBP) to be rebooked on a later Jetstream flight.

I think they were now advertising free rebookings - has that changed recently?

Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 14):
Well, when in a foreign country, it's always good to learn some words in the local language

As a thumb rule I try to learn two words: "Thank you" and "beer". That gets you far and anything else is an added bonus!

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 15):

Naah, I'm pretty fast.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 15):

Oh yes, definitely. A very enjoyable few hours! I think I found something similar for November @ ARN!

Fee was not the right word. I should have said : I paid the 10 GBP fare difference between both flights. No other fees were charged, as a matter of fact.

The SAS Fokkers are gradually beeing replaced with WF Dash 8s these days. My first leg SVG-KRS were taken over by WF when I flew it. The process will be finished by november 1.

My next trip is actually flying one of the remaining Fokkers on the HAU-BGO route in late october. Maybe I will try to put a report together then. However since I'm rather fresh in putting together TRs in my native language I'm not sure if an english one will work out quite as fine as my Norwegian ones.

Hi P.,

That is what I call an exciting weekend trip. A combination of a visit to the sweet Channel Islands and A.net meeting in London!

Good to know you caught some new registrations after all your extensive flying experiences.

How I miss DUS. Your pictures bring me back the nice memories of our stay there. You were lucky with the weather while flying out DUS. I could not see a thing through the clouds.

I witness one British girl trying to self-upgrade herself - she fights her way upstream against the boarding passengers and sits down in CE. A couple of minutes later after she exchanges a few words with the purser she retreats back to the bowels of economy and I never see her again...

Some people are not meant to fly.

Thanks for bringing up the insight review of The Channel Islands and inspiring me for my next trip report.

Cheers,

WOW what a cool trip. DUS looks like a fab airport to spot such a variety of A/C. Also the Channel Islands I have never been to and they look worth a visit. Very nice photos and read. The food looks nice in JER and LHR also

Another good few flights you managed. I never knew that AB flew to JER - is Jersey popular with Germans? I keep planning a trip down to the Channel Islands, hoping to get on a Tri Islander and a Jetstream, but planning a cheap break seems quite complicated.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I ask for “a couple of beers” but only receive one and “maybe another one later in the flight”. Needless to say the second one never comes. Is this a new cutback - previously I’ve always been able to get a couple of drinks on BA?

I've never had a problem getting a second drink towards the end of the flight on BA - normally I ask as they're collecting the rubbish. Last night, though, coming back into Gatwick from Marseille, my G&T request was delived without the G! Didn't really matter, as was planing on bringing it home anyway!

Let me know the next time you're in London if you fancy a drink.

Somehow I knew you would like the food pics  .

You mean expensive? That's quite surprising as Blue Islands, FlyBE, BMIBaby and Aurigny (and BA on LGW-JER) all compete on the routes to mainland and usually it shouldn't be a problem finding a decent fare. Intra-island fares are low as well - competition here as well plus short distances, how much can you actually charge for a 24-mile flight?!

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 22):
Let me know the next time you're in London if you fancy a drink.

Yeah, I will. With the current schedule the next time is in early November, but that is just a couple of hours at Heathrow so maybe not so good for an extended drinking session.

Another interesting report from Guernsey, one of my favourite places in the whole world!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Thread starter):
I had some problems finding an affordable hotel

Obviously I don't know if it came up in your hotel search, but one of my favourite places to stay in Guernsey is the Grange Lodge Hotel. It's at what's known locally as "the top of the Grange", so whilst not in the middle of "town", it's an easy walk down, but maybe a bus ride back up the hill at the end of the day if you're tired! Great bar food too, and serves a nice pint of Monty's...bear it in mind for your next visit!

The pretty nice modern terminal built six years ago:

To be honest, I really don't like the new terminal. The old one had a lot more character and had a great rooftop viewing terrace, as well as a cafeteria that had great views over the tarmac. Sometimes new is not always better!!

Thanks for another great report.

Andy.

Hi FlyingFinn,

another interesting report, I really like the pictures from Jersey. I visited Guernsey earlier this year, but haven't found the time yet to write about it. St. Peter Port is a nice town.

I wouldn’t call it dining, though:

But they have really good sandwiches, unlike many other LCCs.

Nice stuff P, took me a while to get around to reading it though!

Nice to get such a new BA 320 for your flight, the newest one I've managed so far is EUYC, so a few to go yet!

Service is the cookie cutter AB intra-European service - a drinks round and a cheese or turkey sandwich. The cheese one is good as usually, washed down with some decent coffee:

Must do it again!

Hi P!

Another splendid report, but I expected no less from you! the channel islands look as good as ever, there's just something so cozy about them, and they kinda remind me of the isle of man. A trip there is long overdue, I just wish I had more free time as you seem to have!

I decide to grab the Playboy (to practice my Deutsch on the articles, of course!) - as a side note Mark was most intrigued by this during our meeting next day!

After I have just completed the mandatory yearly three weeks of military service yesterday I think i know every page of that particular issue by heart

ahh, the wonders of the European ATC system

Don't get me started. DUS and HAJ are very prone to ATC slotting as it seems that Langen radar, handling among others flights to and from DUS, is (still) experiencing staffing problems. I don't think ive had more than a handful of flights to and from said airports when we didn't have a slot.

Not sure why there’s a Swiss flag on the dashboard

hey, there's always a reason to place a Swiss flag somewhere
