Gate Madness At RDU 9/26/2010

Sun Sep 26, 2010 8:36 pm

Hey all, yet another installment for your reading desires (my second). This time without pics but this is not your typical TR.

--Things started out ok enough. Trying to make my way back to ATL. I was originally scheduled for DL 1285. For this of you that have been watching the weather today, things aren't so hot in ATL so of course the flights are stacking up. I didn't get on my original flight but am confirmed on DL1326. The a/c actually just pulled into the gate.

--Anyway, when I realized I would be getting on my flight I ventured over to C10 to get away from the crowd. JFK was actually boarding at C10 as well. Well, no sooner than I popped on my headphones, I start to hear screaming from the jet bridge. There is a GROWN woman on the ground kicking and fighting the gate agent because they wouldn't let her on board with her THREE carry-on bags. As graphic as it sounds, this wasn't the worst. A supervisor was on the scene soonest trying to calm this woman down. She was with her husband and 2 small children btw (they were clearly shaken by her attitude). After about 5 minutes of back and forth he then tells her she is not getting on the flight and she needs to remove herself from the doorway-all hell breaks loose. She starts to curse and swear and then jumped up forcing herself by him. I mean, this guy must have been at least 6 feet and a little over 220 lbs and he had to physically block the jet bridge door by spreading his legs and arms. Her husband was trying to her her back and the kids started to cry, It was quite sad.
--The gates were pretty busy with everyone doing something (despite all the commotion, the location of C10 made things hard to see/hear). The other female agent finally got on the phone and called security. Not even 2 minutes later, Raleigh Police show at the gate, one with pepper spray at the ready and the other starting directly towards this disturbed woman. It took both cops and the supervisor to get her down. They handcuffed her but...that' not it...she immediately let her body go limp not allowing them to walk her away and they had to drag her from under both arms with her heels going across the terminal floor.

I have NEVER witnessed anything like this in my life. It was very obvious that her husband was more than embarrassed and really did try to help but she wasn't hearing it from ANYONE.

Just thought I would share my experience today.

For thos interested, a full TR with photos can be found below from my last journey.

Welcome to the passengers of today. I don't get my way = Toddler-like tantrum. While they're certainly not all this dramatic, this is the type of attitude I see daily.

Poor children, that's an awful thing for them to have to see.

Won't be so lucky this time   The gate next to C10 is actually un-used for most of the day and there were only about 4 people including myself in the gate house. All pax where already on the plane with this going down. The closest gate was across the way and they were in the middle of the boarding process. I did record the beginning of the tirade but when I saw the kids started crying I stopped out of respect for them.

Wow, this is awful!!
I know that this passenger has overreacted, but, have you tried to check how gate agents treated her?
I ask that, because I had a similar experience.
After 13 years living between Brazil and the USA, my life finally settled down here in Brazil.
Me and my parents did all the clean up of our USA home and had to bring LOTS of things to Brazil. My mom had 2 carry-ons and asked at check-in, if there would be a problem. "No problem at all" we were told...
Yeah, when we were boarding, a gate agent stopped my mother and shouted at her: "One hundred dollars for one of these bags to go on the cargo hold, or you won't board".
Thank God we remained calm, stepped back, paid what the agent asked and watched one of the bags being put down there.
Come on, what kind of attitude was that?? BTW, it was American Airlines.

But the situation you described is shocking. Specially for the kids to see their mother being handcuffed and carried away like that.

Interesting to hear this story from another side...

(for the record, I was not at RDU this day, but I do take the flight in question to JFK quite a bit...)

Care to share the side you heard? I'm SURE it is part of gate agent lore within DL now!
