United ORD-FRA 772 New Config Biz

Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:05 pm

Hallo from Northern Germany,

I am studying for a while in Germany and went back to the States for a few weeks during the semester break here. I do not normally write too many TRs but a buddy of mine wanted me to write one for this since it was the new configuration on the 772s. On the way back to the States I flew UA from BRU-IAD in the old configuration, and do not have really any pictures from that.

Anyway I hope you enjoy.

01 April 2011
UA944, ORD-FRA
Block Time 7h 55m
777-222ER, N788UA
Seat: 10C Forward facing Business class

So my flight into ORD was not a problem, I got in about 5 hours before my flight to FRA left, I just wasted my time by wandering around the airport and taking pictures of airplanes

UA 744 heading to NRT

I showed up at the gate about 2 hours before the plane left and read my book to waste the time. The agents showed up about an hour and 15 minutes before departure. About 30 minutes before departure they cleared the stand-by's and I was lucky first on the list and was lucky enough to get C, she did not have any windows available which was kind of a bummer.

I boarded and was greated by a friendly F/A, and pointed me to my seat, I was in the last row of C and the entire row was full on non-rev's

Seat in ORD

The seat was very nice, this was my 3rd time riding in them. The only complaint is that when you are trying to relax there is nothing to rest your feet against, and that there is not much storage in these seats, as there was in the old seats, but besides that I love the seats.

I was given the choice of Sparkling Wine, OJ or Water on the ground, I choose the OJ.

Take off was short for the load and we were off on our way to FRA

I started watching "The Tourist" and it was a really good movie and has a good twist at the end.

Over Michigan the F/As started the Drink service.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado011.jpg
I took a coke, and the nuts were not very fresh.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado012.jpg
The first course was very good. The shrimp tasted great., but I do not have a menu so I forget exactly what it was but it was with a Mango chutney and tasted excellent.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado013.jpg
For the main course I tried to get the beef because it sounded really good, but they were all out of it, so I took the chicken with curry. It was good, not the best airplane food but doable, the only thing I was not sure of was it was bone in, but it was a small bone so it did not make much of a difference.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado015.jpg
For desert, I love that UA now has ice cream in C, whereas they used to only have it in F. And I took the Starbucks and a Bailey's. I really love the Starbucks and hope they do not get rid of it after the merger, but I did hear from a OO F/A that they were going to be putting it in on express soon, so that gives me hope because OO coffee was nasty.

I am not a very good sleeper on planes and this flight leaves at 1415 so not too easy to sleep in the middle of the day. 944 is my favourite flight to FRA because it gets in at 0545 but it is also sucks when I get there because I normally do not sleep for over 30 hours when I take it, which I did this time too.

For the rest of the plane I watched TV and Movies, The Rabbit Hole was a really good one. But in the middle of the flight my screen froze when I went through the prompts too fast so it took about 15 min to restart my system.

System restarting

About 75 minutes before landing the F/As started around with the fruit plate and yoghurt service, I do though wish that UA went to a hot breakfast on flights as it would be much more filling than just a little fruit.

Breakfast

Right before landing one of the F/As went through the cabin and thanked all of the pax for their business and thanked all of the employees for their hard work, I really enjoyed that and wish that the F/As would do that on every flight.

Landing was smooth, and a quick taxi in and German customs are never a deal, unlike the U.S. guys. and I went to go wait for my connection to BRE

N788UA at the break of dawn.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado023.jpg
As soon as I got back, I got a cup of wonderful German coffee, something that can not be matched in the states.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/Colorado022.jpg
early morning LH departure to BRU.

I ended up actually spending 7 hours in FRA because flying on a ZED fare I did not get on the first flight back to BRE, so I had to wait around for another 4 hours. But I was lucky enough to get the last seat on that flight. On that flight I slept the whole time from as soon as I sat down, but when I got into BRE I was busy for the rest of the day, so I did end up going 36 hours up with one hour of sleep. As I said the best part about 944 is that you get in at 0545 but the worst part is that it is about 2245 in ORD.

I hope you enjoyed, and thanks for the comments in advance

Nice TR N104UA. I enjoyed reading it and great pictures. The Baileys and ice cream sound like a great combo.

I have really been looking forward to trying out UA's new seats ever since I sat in the bulk head row of the 747 from SFO to NRT. Those seats look really sleek and comfortable.
The only concern is still the catering. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said 'doable'. Having been in food service for two years, experience taught me that presentation was almost equal to smell and taste in terms of food prep. While United is better than some, I believe they still bring out the trolleys with linens and silver(???), the plating is still a little weak. Better though than US last week who actually brought the food cart out down the aisle for their Envoy class from PHL to BRU(I was in Economy and was glad I didn't burn the miles). If UA can improve that, and many think they will with CO's influence, youre going to have a superior business class product.
Lastly, I cannot agree with you more for Baileys and Ice Cream. I always want to have it home, but never do because it's one of the things I associate with flying.
Great report on the new cabin! Thank you for sharing.

It has been announced that the new United will be going with Continental's caterer so better meals should be coming before long.

I have flown on the new united J, awesome seat (better than AA's and I like it more than the herringbone) and decent IFE for an American carrier, but UA has to bring their catering up a bit, cold breakfast on international J let alone from their headquarter hub to their "European Hub". Other airlines you get hot breakfast in domestic F even on a 2 hour flight

I concur with the above; Seat = good. Food = bad.

Their closest competitor from ORD, AA, doesnt do any better though.....

I have to give the edge to AA on this one. Of course UA will get the nod for the lie-flat fans, but i've found the quality of food in J to be superior to this.

Comparisons from comparable ORD-BRU flights:

Of course it could be argued that is why UA has F on these routes and AA does not, therefore becoming more of a hybrid.

Thanks for the very nice report, N104UA. Great to see one on the refurbished 777.

Nice trip report and nice pics, too. I also agree with what most people have already said, United's J catering looks awful !

Cheers,

I found the food bad also. I flew ORD-FRA in march and found the food to be bad. I was in first and had some wierd stuff for lunch and breakfest. Not good food at all.

Nice report and pictures, thanks for sharing.

The new seat seems pretty nice, the lack of stowage around it not so good though.

Not impressed with the catering though, this really needs to improve, AA is not great in J but it's better than the UA offerings we are seeing of late.

Hi!

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the report and pics. I haven't flown on United in a long time but they looked not too bad here. Did you fly on to Bremen? I've been there with Ryanair! Great town with some nice trams!

Many thanks,

P.

They are really nice and I would recommend them, the only downside is when your neighbor needs to get out.

I have heard that as well, but I have never flown AA before so I can not personally judge

UA in my experience is a good airline to fly, and I would recommend them to anyone, they have started to up their service from what is was a few years ago.

I did fly into BRE on LH but I slept the whole way, so did not take any pics, plus I was in a center seat, but it was the new LH seats and they are nice. I do live near Bremen and it is a really nice city with lots to do.

I think it has more to do with the amount of money each carrier approves per passenger meal versus the catering company itself.

I agree about the food tasting better at AA, but the seats aren't much better at UA in Biz.
